PB hotel design editorial

The idea of building an entire Canarian village from scratch on the Costa Adeje cliffs — clock towers, turreted pavilions, ochre-washed facades, terracotta rooflines — was either an act of architectural hubris or a remarkably confident piece of placemaking. At Bahia del Duque, completed in 1995 and spread across some thirty distinct buildings arranged around lagoon pools and subtropical gardens, it turns out to be the latter. The massing draws on the vernacular architecture of the Canary Islands, with Mudéjar detailing, louvered balconies, and decorative tilework woven through a complex of structures that manages to feel more like a hill town than a resort, particularly when viewed from the upper terraces against the Atlantic horizon. The interior approach shifts between two registers. Standard rooms are finished in terracotta floor tiles bordered with dark green ceramic insets, botanical-print curtains in palm-leaf greens, and tufted dark leather headboards — warm, considered, and appropriately tropical without straining for effect. The suites move somewhere more considered: volcanic basalt stonework rising behind leather-upholstered beds framed by linen canopies, striped silk daybed benches, and woven bamboo ceiling panels that introduce texture against polished concrete floors. The outdoor dining terrace, shaded by a scallop-edged canvas awning above white-painted cast-iron lamp standards and rattan seating, carries the feeling of a prosperous colonial-era pavilion opening toward the palms and the sea.

"We absolutely loved this hotel , made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived. We had a garden view room which was nice and quiet for a peaceful nights sleep. It was clean and prepared ready for our arrival. We were half board , there was a choice of lots of restaurants but had to pay extra for side dishes and drinks so be aware some items were extra and some meals were more than expected. . Breakfast was a buffet style restaurant all you can eat, the choices and variety was outstanding and re filled with fresh food constantly. The staff were amazing shout outs to alfonsena at reception, Pal upalupa restaurant and cesar in concierge who booked our restaurants and our 6 hour private tour of the island, which we highly recommend, Haverer our driver was brilliant his knowledge of the island was amazing and was very interesting, we even travelled up high for the volcanic views, a beautiful island. There are 5 pools, 2 heated and plenty of sunbeds and towels provided. Gate to beach and outside restaurants and shops, the coastline was beautiful. Our room was cleaned daily bottled water delivered daily but we bought our own locally it was cheaper. Fresh towels every day, room well cleaned. Fridge in the room was stocked with drink but again we bought our own for the room. A couple of points to raise, they are currently refurbishing this was next to our room. 9am to 5pm but not the weekends our balcony view on the ground floor was not to be desired due to this but it didn't bother us really so didn't spoil it for us. I do think this should have be stated when we booked the holiday but it wasn't. This hotel also has alot of steps up and down to pools restaurants and the beach so be aware of this. Make up had gone missing from my bedside draw, so that was a bit of a mystery. The airport not the hotels fault and we cant wait to return but the new EES airport system is preventing us at the moment until this has been rectified. Only 6 machines to deal with the hundreds in the queue. We literally just made our flight due to the queue flying home. Staff at the airport didn't know what to do when all Egate machines shutdown and stopped working. But thank you Bahia del duque for having us, it was wondrrful."

"Firstly let me preface this with acknowledging that both outbound and inbound journeys with British Airways were from a place hotter than hell. Outbound they managed to lose 3 of 4 cases, inbound we (like many others) were seconds away from missing our flight due to the (quite frankly ridiculous) EES rules at passports now being applied. Quite how you are supposed to check in a maximum of two hours prior and then queue for three hours seems to be missed on anyone who has not done basic maths. But that's Tenerife at the moment. All I would say is "avoid like the plague" until they resolve it.....we were one of the few lucky ones out of thousands that made our flight and, quite frankly, no one at the airport cared at all. Anyway that's not the hotels fault but it should be considered if you venture to sunnier climes Moving on Arrival was good. We stayed in one of the Villas so, to be honest, at the higher end of the room prices so would naturally expect 5 star service. This review in that regard may sound picky but if you pay a price you should get that service With 3 of 4 bags missing and BA customer service being there usual "Chocolate Teapot" selves, reception did do whatever they could. Checking us into our room in super quick time and taking us to the shops on site to buy some urgent clothes and toiletries The resort is set on a steep hillside so get you steps in. Buggy's are available to move you around if need be (more on that later) Restaurant choices are good.....Kensei being a stand out superstar for special occasions. Much like many resorts now (we went Half Board)...Half Board is a flexible concept so think of it more like "Discounted Meals" with many items carrying surcharges for half board payers. We were fine with that though and, to be fair its no different from other hotels round the world Weather was pretty poor...not the hotels fault obviously, but we had prepared ourselves for this by expecting that the indoor pool at the Spa could be used. Nope, you have to pay for a spa treatment to use the pool...Bit disappointed in that, sorry! Beach is NOT private.....it's sort of looks like it should be based on hotel pictures but it's a public beach that is at the rear of the hotel. To be honest the weather pretty much made it a redundant argument anyway but there are no reserved areas that we could see. So if you are going in high season be prepared to get there early as its one of the few decent sandy beaches on the island Villa was good, large with a small pool. Room housekeeping was just plain confusing to be honest. You sort of have an expectation that cups would be cleaned and basic's like tea and coffee and water would be replenished every day. It became a bit of a regular thing in the end, calling reception asking for more tea, more water Look, I'm not precious, I can wash a cup or two, but if you want us to do that, give us the tools to do it (washing up liquid ???, a tea towel ??).... It just felt a bit weird....like we hadn't found the right person to do this "That person does towels , that person collects plates etc"....and then randomly we put a load of empty glass bottles in the bin and then when we returned, housekeeping had taken them out of the bin and left them on the side ! And then randomly, the day before we were leaving a man knocked at the door and said he was our butler !"....would have been nice to know he was around !...maybe he was off earlier in the week ?! I don't know, maybe we were self catering and just didn't know it ?? Aforementioned buggy's got more confusing as the week went on. We're not sure if that was the hotel getting busier or maybe it was just us ?....We were told we couldn't reserve buggy's for a certain time and just give them 10 minutes notice....a couple of times they just didn't turn up so we just gave up and walked down Honestly would we return ?, probably not and definitely not whilst the airport is the way it is.....if they keep that up it will kill the tourism industry for the island....the sad thing is, it could be done so much easier. Open check in a couple of hours earlier, have queues for the times of the flights etc At the end of the day we chose this as an alternative to our usual Dubai excursion, the situation being as such that that's a no go at this time. Dubai sets the bar high, and rightly so. It would unfair to a point to compare them because I acknowledge that price points differ. HOWEVER i stress that this is not a more cost effective" hotel so standards should be impeccable. Ultimately, acknowledge the indoor pool, be clearer on the beach, sort out the buggy's and expand and clarify the housekeeping service Then i think the stars would be 4 or 5 not 3"

"Outstanding hotel in every way, close location to beaches, shops, bars and restaurants, hotel staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, rooms are spacious and like the hotel, spotlessly clean and well maintained, 7 on site restaurants ( we only ate in two and they were very good ) and 5 superb pools, all ‘lagoon’ themed which added to the sense of luxury, evening entertainment is little hit and miss but that’s to be expected as they’re trying to cater for all tastes, the piano bar from 10.30pm has some very good, more mainstream acts which we enjoyed, the spa is fabulous as well, although that’s an additional cost, as is the immaculate 9 hole pitch and putt course, I’m not a golfer but even I was impressed with it, I would highly recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a high you end very relaxing holiday."

"A really beautiful resort, thoughtfully laid out. The swimming pools are all either salt or fresh water and there are plenty of them. The poolside cocktail bar is a must and the restaurants are great. We particularly enjoyed the Japanese and Italian restaurants and the amazing paella in Sua. Without exception, the staff are amazing. We have already booked our return trip next year."
