PB hotel design editorial

The idea of building an entire Canarian village from scratch on the Costa Adeje cliffs — clock towers, turreted pavilions, ochre-washed facades, terracotta rooflines — was either an act of architectural hubris or a remarkably confident piece of placemaking. At Bahia del Duque, completed in 1995 and spread across some thirty distinct buildings arranged around lagoon pools and subtropical gardens, it turns out to be the latter. The massing draws on the vernacular architecture of the Canary Islands, with Mudéjar detailing, louvered balconies, and decorative tilework woven through a complex of structures that manages to feel more like a hill town than a resort, particularly when viewed from the upper terraces against the Atlantic horizon. The interior approach shifts between two registers. Standard rooms are finished in terracotta floor tiles bordered with dark green ceramic insets, botanical-print curtains in palm-leaf greens, and tufted dark leather headboards — warm, considered, and appropriately tropical without straining for effect. The suites move somewhere more considered: volcanic basalt stonework rising behind leather-upholstered beds framed by linen canopies, striped silk daybed benches, and woven bamboo ceiling panels that introduce texture against polished concrete floors. The outdoor dining terrace, shaded by a scallop-edged canvas awning above white-painted cast-iron lamp standards and rattan seating, carries the feeling of a prosperous colonial-era pavilion opening toward the palms and the sea.

"This enormous multi faceted hotel is built into the hill and overlooks and is directly adjacent to the ocean and promenade. It really reminded us of Portmeirion in Wales with its various seemingly Italianate stile of buildings. Because of the upside down design, the reception is on the top floor and the rooms and bars are on lower floors. There are ample lifts/stairs and slopes but exploring will keep you fit. The many pools, some heated, are on the lower levels, as are the many restaurants. We tried six of the restaurants and they were all exceptional. Make sure you book and advise whether you wish inside or out. We were originally going to visit the Michelin Starred restaurant (Nub) but the standard of the many other restaurants steered us away from this rather expensive option. All staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. There is one restaurant specifically for breakfast and this was quite mind blowing in its multitude of offerings. We were always greeted by friendly staff and escorted to a table of our choice. The staff were exceptional, as they were across the organisation. This is true Five Star organisation at every level unlike some so called Five Star hotels, say in London. The Concierge organised our bookings which all went perfectly. If you specifically require outside dining the Concierge will arrange that. The hotel is maintained well and is pristine. The housekeeping staff were also superb as were the bar, restaurant and pool staff. Reception staff were very impressive. One of us had a problem with their phone set-up and a member of Reception staff spent almost an hour resolving the issue, which he duly did. We cannot recommend this hotel enough and look forward to returning."

"My husband and I just returned from a fabulous stay at Bahia del Duque from March 8-12. The grounds were immaculate, and every staff member we came across was friendly and helpful - always stopping to say hello. This is an impressive, luxurious resort and it made celebrating our 20th anniversary extra special. Everywhere we looked, there was something beautiful to see. We would return in a heartbeat! Thank you!"

"First time at this hotel and all staff in every area went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Fanny in charge of guest rooms facilities was exceptional. Proactive and hard working. All her team worked well together. Just a few pointers: Sun loungers need elastic straps to stop them from sliding off. The gym needs updating and a changing room/en-suite bathroom facilities needed. There is nowhere to shower and change into swim wear apart from the toilets (which are in bad repair)below the restaurant which is only accessible outside the gym."

"Superb hotel! Service was amazing, all staff were extremely helpful and professional. Breakfast was wonderful, the most amazing selection of food and the quality was great. Loved the help yourself fresh orange juice machine! Room (garden room) had been recently renovated and was large and the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was great, lovely power shower with luxury Molton Brown toiletries. Hotel garden is beautiful, colorful flowers and interesting trees. Love the fresh flowers all around the hotel. Day trip to the volcanic area organised by the consierge was wonderful, super knowledgeable guide. Boat trip to see the whales was also great. Saw 15 pilot whales in a group and some dolphins. Wonderful hotel. Hope to return."
