PB hotel design editorial

That unmistakable terracotta facade — deep coral render stepping down a volcanic hillside on Tenerife's remote southwest coast — was the work of Miami-based architect Melvin Villarroel, whose Moorish-Canarian massing gives the Ritz-Carlton Abama a silhouette closer to a medina than a European resort hotel. Completed in 2006 across 160 acres of former banana plantation above Playa San Juan, the property deploys 469 rooms and suites in a series of terraced volumes that cascade toward the Atlantic, the warm ochre stonework and arched loggia drawing as much from North African precedent as from Canarian vernacular. The interiors, refreshed in more recent years, resolve the tension between the building's bold exterior geometry and the comfort guests expect at this level. Guestrooms show exposed timber beam ceilings stained a deep chocolate, cream limestone floors, and upholstered headboards in natural linen — warm but carefully controlled. The upper-tier suites push out through floor-to-ceiling glazing onto broad terraces planted with monstera and frangipani, the pink plasterwork of the building framing views over a ribbon of lawn and open sea. Public spaces work a double-height atrium with globe pendant clusters in smoked glass, cane-back chairs, and teal banquette seating arranged around a long communal table — midcentury in spirit, Canarian in light. The terrace restaurant, shaded by a mahogany pergola, drops the formality entirely, wicker rope chairs and hardwood decking keeping the Atlantic horizon as the only necessary decoration.

"We have just returned from a wonderful stay at the hotel. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, with a lovely touch of a welcome gift for our children to celebrate my son’s birthday. We then got to our room and were blown away by the extra special birthday set up Jessica had organised for my son. It was the best welcome we have ever received in a hotel. Thank you Jessica and the front office team. During our stay we ate at all the restaurants and had a wonderful experience in all of them. M.B was an amazing dining experience where we were treated like royalty, including the children. My son and husband enjoying playing golf on a couple of occasions and were very impressed by the course. Thank you to all the team and we hope to return in the not too distant future."

"Our fourth visit to the Ritz Carlton Abama and again delighted with our experience. We come for complete rest and peace and quiet and that is what we got. We stayed in the Adults only area of the Retreat and enjoyed the child free zone. The drinks and snacks provided in this area during the day are really good, especially the cakes at tea time which offer a different choice each day. Staff very welcoming and during our 5 day stay we did not have a single negative experience. We ate breakfast at El Mirador which was superb, wonderful buffet and a great view. We ate here in the evening a couple of nights which was also good. Verona and Txoko also did not disappoint and the food quality was very good. Prices are a little high but only to be expected at a 5 star resort such as this. We are already planning another return visit. Staff excellent without exception."

"HORRIBLE service. tried to make reservations - for 10 day stay - and spoke to the front desk because we read the main lagoon pool would be closed but the property had 6 other pools. wanted to know if these were private pools or would be open to the hotel guests while the Lagoon pool was closed. SIMPLE question. the lady who answered the phone would NOT give a name only front desk and would not answer our - what we thought was a simple question. after asking a few different ways she would not respond and she just hung up!!! if they cannot answer Q&A over the phone presume they cannot handle in person guests."

"The Highlights: Atmosphere & Dining The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama is an incredible property in a breathtaking location. It carries a sophisticated, upscale vibe that immediately sets a high bar. Dining: Breakfast and the various on-site restaurants were top-notch. We had to drive out for dinner on multiple occasions due to no availability at any onsite restaurants. One aspect they have to improve. The Lobby Bar: This was the standout of our stay. The outdoor seating overlooking the pond and pool is serene. More importantly, the service and cocktails here were true 5-star quality, the team at the lobby bar is fantastic. The Disappointment: Inconsistent Service Standards While our arrival (check-in, valet, and room introduction) was flawless, the quality of service dropped significantly afterward. There is a glaring lack of communication between the front desk and housekeeping that resulted in several frustrating experiences: Housekeeping Failures: We were promised a child’s bathrobe upon arrival. Despite requesting it 3–4 times throughout our stay and being told each time it was "on its way" - it never arrived. We eventually stopped asking out of embarrassment. Maintenance Issues: After our child accidentally spilled water on the duvet, we requested a replacement before heading to dinner. We returned to find the wet duvet still on the bed. It took two calls to housekeeping and a third call to the lobby late at night to finally get it resolved. Departure Friction: At checkout, our bill included charges from the previous occupant. The staff hadn't verified the dates, and we had to spend extra time getting the invoice corrected. Furthermore, upon leaving, no one offered to help load our heavy luggage into the car, despite seeing us with a young child. Family Suitability: While the Kids' Club is good, there is very little else in the way of play areas or entertainment for children. Apart from light music performances in the evenings, the resort is dead silent. It feels much more suited for adults who prefer their quiet relaxed private evenings; parents with active young kids may struggle to keep them entertained. Final Verdict - The housekeeping and administrative service currently feel like a 3-star experience in a 5-star shell. It is clear the resort struggles to maintain standards during high occupancy. It’s a shame, as the property itself is grand and the potential for a world-class stay is there, but the execution is currently too inconsistent to justify the Ritz-Carlton name."
