PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a headland 36 metres above the Indian Ocean on Sri Lanka's southern coast, the clifftop village that Thai architect Lek Bunnag completed in 2014 spreads across 12 acres of tropical garden with the unhurried logic of a settlement that grew organically rather than was planned in a single stroke. Cape Weligama's 39 villas and suites sit beneath terracotta-tiled pavilion roofs whose pitch draws directly from Sri Lankan and Southeast Asian vernacular timber construction, the forms embedded deep enough in the landscape that the aerial view reads as village rather than resort. The signature Moon Pool traces a 60-metre crescent along the cliff edge, its geometry calibrated so the water surface dissolves into the Indian Ocean horizon beyond. Inside, Singapore studio JPA Design works a palette that is warm without being heavy. Bedroom walls arrive in vivid blocks of cobalt blue or burnt terracotta, set against white board-formed ceilings and dark hardwood headboards, the contrast bold enough to feel local in spirit. Botanical and natural history prints, woven jute rugs, and teak daybeds give each villa a quietly accumulated character. The open restaurant terraces, with their exposed timber post-and-beam structures and terracotta roof details carried through from the guest pavilions, extend the architectural coherence right to the cliff edge, teak furniture and stone paving stepping out toward palm-fringed views of the bay below.

"We visited Atlas at Cape Weligama as non-staying guests, hoping to experience the property and consider it for a future longer stay. What we encountered instead was poor treatment, a complete lack of empathy, and a level of guest handling that was frankly unacceptable for a resort of this standard. From the outset, the food and beverage management seemed disorganised and indifferent. The menu was limited, the service lacked care, and our concerns were not taken seriously at any point. Rather than making any effort to understand our experience as paying guests, the team responded with defensiveness and attitude, which only made matters worse. The most disappointing part was the leadership. We requested to speak with the F&B head, but he was not properly available and appeared unwilling to face the issue directly. His assistant also demonstrated equally poor leadership by interrupting, arguing, and finger-pointing instead of listening or resolving the situation. For a property that presents itself as a luxury destination, this level of food and beverage leadership is simply not good enough. What stood out most was the obvious disregard for non-hotel-staying guests. There was no warmth, no hospitality, and no sense that our custom mattered. That lack of empathy, combined with poor food and beverage management, left a very bad impression. I would strongly urge the resort manager and the owners, the Fernando family, to review the standards of service and leadership in this outlet immediately."

"Exceptional service at a resort well-deserving of its Michelin status. Many thanks to Devinda, our experienced curator, who facilitated a very pleasurable stay. Cape Weligama is an older property, but excellent maintenance and recent renovations have refreshed the experience whilst retaining its original charm. The beach club is a welcome addition and something that was lacking for a coastal property. Several lookouts offer breathtaking views of the sunset. Housekeeping embodied the 'invisible hand' approach for an unobtrusive experience during daily maintenance and turn down. Can recommend the Cape Residence for two couples looking for privacy and shared living spaces."

"We spent a few wonderful days at Cape Weligama and left wishing we had stayed longer. The property itself is beautiful, perched above the ocean with incredible views at every turn. We found ourselves spending hours at the Moon Pool, which is not only stunning but also has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it hard to leave. This was our second time choosing Cape Weligama for our stay in Sri Lanka, and returning only reinforced why we loved it so much the first time. What really made our stay special, however, was the people. Brenden looked after us during our second visit, and the quality of service was exceptional from the moment we arrived. He always made time for us, anticipated our needs, and ensured every detail was taken care of. All of the staff were fantastic, consistently friendly, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our stay memorable. The team at the Moon Pool and the bar were equally fantastic, always welcoming us with a smile. The Pisco Sours became a favourite part of our afternoons. One of the most memorable experiences was the Chef’s Market Experience. Going to the local market, choosing the vegetables and fish ourselves, and then returning to cook alongside the Chef gave us a real connection to Sri Lankan food and culture. Tasting dishes made from ingredients we had personally selected just hours before was something we will remember for a long time. Cape Weligama is a very special place. Beautiful setting, genuine hospitality, and experiences that feel authentic rather than staged. We left with wonderful memories and hope to return one day."

"The most wonderful and luxurious hotel. As we were traveling around Sri Lanka, this hotel was one of our last destinations. Previous hotel gave us stomach issues and the way Cape Weligama took care of us was fantastic. The chefs made sure to accommodate us, always had a nice chat with us and very delicious food with generous portions. The food is truely exceptional. The whole staff was incredibly friendly, well-spoken, full of great advice and extremly attentive. They were so wonderful with our children. Our kids love animals and staff striaght away noticed it - took them to feed peacocks, found them porcupine quill and let us know when there were turtles in the sea. Also collected some special sea shells for them. The forest school was another great addition that our kids remember fondly from our holiday. Feel like pictures don’t entirely do justices to this place. The rooms are lovely. Spacious with great amenities. Bath and the steam shower is exceptional. The sleep was great as quality of their bedding and beds itself was true five start luxury standard. Pools are nice, grounds are gorgeous - lots of animals and beautiful views. Location is wonderful as well as everything is relatively close by and can explore lots outside the hotel. One night our room had electrical problems and they kindly upgraded us to a villa, which we truely appreciated. Again, I can’t emphasise enough how lovely, caring, kind the staff was - from reception to managers, to waiters, bar staff, chefs, lifeguards… they made our stay incredibily special and we couldn’t thank them enough. Extremly high customer service as it should be in resort like this. Truely remarkable standards in every aspect of hotel, we had the greatest pleasure staying here and would recommend to everyone."
