PB hotel design editorial

Scattered through the scrub forest above Yala's boulder-strewn coastline, the twenty-eight structures of Wild Coast Tented Lodge were designed to disappear. Nomadic Resorts, led by Olav Bruin with Freddie Catlow, Inma Cantero, Oana Tudose, and Julian Klaus Trummer, arranged the camp in the outline of a leopard's paw print, a formal decision that only makes sense from altitude. From the ground, the white arched Cocoon tents read as outcrops of smooth stone, their scalloped canvas forms echoing the granite boulders that punctuate the site. The main pavilions take a different approach entirely: great domes clad in reclaimed teak shingles, their broad arched openings framing the pool and the tree canopy beyond, their interiors lined with a lattice of sustainable bamboo that filters afternoon light into something warm and amber. The bamboo chandelier above the bar, suspended in clustered vertical tubes, won the UNESCO Prix Versailles for World's Best Restaurant Design in 2018. Bo Reudler Studio furnished the Cocoon interiors with the sensibility of a well-traveled colonial study transported into the jungle: four-poster beds draped in sheer muslin, leather campaign chairs, Persian-style rugs in deep indigo laid over warm timber floors. Circular porthole windows cut into the curved walls frame views of the surrounding forest at eye level, reinforcing the sense of looking out from within a natural shell. The effect is intimate without feeling confined, the domed ceiling pulling upward while the furnishings hold the room close.

About

Wild Coast is part of the Resplendent Ceylon “best of Sri Lanka” circuit, created by the family-owned Dilmah Tea Company. Three Relais & Chateaux resorts; Tea Trails, Cape Weligama & Wild Coast Tented Lodge, form an enchanting "Route de Bonheur (Happiness)" from tea fields to clifftop beach & safari lodge. Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits on a rugged beach on the edge of Yala National Park, where the jungle meets the Indian Ocean. 28 vaulted Cocoons & Urchin tents offer the comfort of a luxury hotel with the excitement of a raw wilderness experience. The open-air bamboo-clad Den and Dining Pavilion – designed to mirror the boulders scattered across the golden beach beyond – wrap around the free-form swimming pool. Guests can enjoy creative daily-changing menus of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and sundowner cocktails and picnics al fresco on the sand dunes, watching dusk settle over the Indian Ocean.

"This has got to be one of the finest resort experiences I have ever had. From the stunningly appointed bedroom pods with private plunge pool (family tents), to the bar and dining experiences, the sundowner drinks on the beach above the waves, resort pool with a view and, of course, the safaris - 1 free per day of residence. The staff are professional, attentive and accommodating. The safaris come with your very own park ranger guide, who’s always in the know around where the animals (namely leopards) are hiding out. And the food is next level - the Michelin rating is well deserved. Highly recommend a 2-3 day special indulgence at this resort."

"We couldn’t fault the hotel but more on that later. We were lucky enough to drive 8 times with Shani and our wonderful driver. 8 leopards in 8 drives thanks to Shani’s knowledge of every creature great and small in Yala l, which is what really made the experience. She spotted leopards that other rangers missed and her recommendations were always well reasoned and spot on. Our driver’s knowledge of every nook and cranny of Yala and his 4WD expertise made the whole experience comfortable and rewarding. Shani was always positive and encouraging and determined to find every bird and animal we had on our list. She knows the calls and spots them from a mile away. She is truly awesome. The hotel was also impeccable. From the 1890s era design to the hidden luxuries and delicious food. Everything was spot on."

"Wild Coast Tented Lodge was truly one of the most memorable experiences I've had in Sri Lanka. From the beautiful cocoon-style suites and exceptional hospitality to spotting elephants and a leopard in the wild, every moment felt special. The setting between Yala's wilderness and the Indian Ocean is breathtaking and the attention to detail throughout the stay was remarkable. If you're looking for a unique blend of luxury, nature and adventure, Wild Coast is an experience you'll remember long after you've left."
