PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the wild, reef-fringed Toiny coast on St. Barts' exposed Atlantic side — a stretch of shoreline most properties have historically avoided precisely because of its rough surf and relative inaccessibility — Hotel le Toiny made a virtue of that remoteness from the moment it opened in 1992. The property was developed by the Simonet family, who understood that the dramatic topography of this volcanic hillside, where steep green slopes tumble toward a crescent of sand framed by rocky headlands, was itself the design statement. Fifteen cottage-style villas, each with its own private pool, are distributed across the hillside rather than concentrated at the waterfront, a layout that prioritises seclusion over social spectacle. The interiors have shifted in register across renovations, and the images show two distinct modes in play: one set of rooms leans into the traditional Caribbean cottage language — white-painted rafter ceilings with exposed timber trusses, wide-plank bleached oak floors, mirrored nightstands, and a palette of white linen and soft cerulean blue that echoes the sea framed by full-height sliding glass panels. The newer contemporary suites read as crisper, with flat white volumes, teak-decked terraces, and fuchsia accent bedding introducing a more St. Tropez-adjacent sensibility. At ground level, the open-sided restaurant pavilion reflects in an ink-blue pool at dusk, while the beach bar beneath the sea grape trees — teak chairs, canvas shade sails, sand underfoot — remains Le Toiny's most persuasive argument for staying on the Atlantic side.

"We stayed five days and could not be more pleased. While our villa was outstanding, the staff really made the difference. They were so engaging, helpful and eager to make sure we had a terrific stay. It was a team effort to the stay memorable. We traditionally never go back to the same place twice but we’ll certainly make an exception for Le Toiny!"

"I have travelled to St. Barths many times staying in villas with bigger groups. Going as just a couple, we selected Le Toiny and had previously dined there about 10 years ago and enjoyed it. The villas and service were excellent. Very thoughtful amenities were available on arrival and in the villa during the stay. The room was very clean throughout and appreciate the housekeeping for their diligence. The only think I would change with the villa are the sheets and pillows. There was some staining on both when arriving, along with a few on the white furniture, which seems could of easily been addressed with hot water and some bleach (perhaps they can't use it on the island?). Nonetheless, it took some of the gloss off the experience. It was also present when they changed the sheets mid-week. I would also recommend changing the pillows as they were small and flat. Good rule of thumb is a standard medium firm down/cotton mix pillow for the head and a secondary firm body pillow - just a suggestion for the hotel. The villa pool and towels were always well kept and super clean - well done. The free breakfast was a great amenity and we ate there all 7 mornings and enjoyed it. Not sure why they would charge for the same items if being brought to the room via room service with a delivery upcharge. Strange but didn't bother us as we walked to the restaurant without issue. Everyone on property is very attentive and all looked like super models (both genders). Not kidding. Think I'll go to the gym more. :-) The last night our wifi and bedroom A/C weren't working. I felt like that should have been resolved without excuses but unfortunately we were offered nothing other than an apology and shrugging shoulders. That was disappointing. Other than that the stay was extraordinary but could have been perfect if not for the non-working essential items noted. Maybe offer a glass of champagne? We would definitely go back and think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Well done Le Toiny!"

"We came to St Barth for a family celebration. Le Toiny is a perfect place. They helped us plan and made our dreams come true. The cuisine at Le Toiny is delicious and first class. There is something for everyone. The villas are amazing and fitted with every modern accommodation. I highly recommend Le Toiny to anyone who wants to visit St. Barth."

"This was our first visit to Le Toiny, and it was absolutely spectacular. We have stayed at other hotels in Saint Barth’s but none compare to this experience. First of all, the property is beautiful and very well maintained. Our suite, which was more like a villa, was enormous, and we had our own pool and patio. The beach club, accessed by canopied Range Rover Defenders, is very chic, and the restaurant is both delicious and a cool scene without being tacky or rowdy. While the “physical plant” was exceptional, it cannot compare to the amazing staff. Everyone from front desk to concierges to shuttle drivers to wait staff to housekeeping could not be more friendly, accommodating, and very competent. Their response time to any request or question was immediate, and follow-through was impeccable. We even received a personally hand written note from housekeeping thanking us for the opportunity to service our room, something I have never seen before. The Beach Extravaganza (every Thursday night) was fun and festive without being wild or too loud. The music was great, as was the food and service, and the light and fire show was really cool. I could go on and on about how impressed we were with Le Toiny, but I urge anyone interested in visiting Saint Barth’s to experience it firsthand. We will absolutely be back!"
