PB hotel design editorial

Christian Liaigre's hand is rarely mistaken — that particular economy of dark wood against white, the insistence on furniture that carries weight without bulk — and at Le Sereno, his only hotel commission, it finds perhaps its most complete expression. Set along the sheltered lagoon of Grand Cul de Sac on St. Barts, the property was conceived in 2005 as a series of low, white-painted bungalows arranged directly on the beach, their shallow-pitched roofs and louvered shutters drawing from Caribbean vernacular without resorting to pastiche. The 37 suites keep to a single storey, maintaining a horizontal intimacy with the water that larger properties consistently sacrifice for views. Inside, the rooms sustain the discipline Liaigre applied to his Paris interiors and furniture collections: four-poster canopy beds draped in white mosquito gauze, dark-stained hardwood floors, leather-strapped luggage benches, and bathrooms where a freestanding soaking tub sits on an elevated timber platform open to the bedroom through louvered folding doors. The palette never wavers from white, warm wood, and near-black — a restraint that makes the turquoise of the lagoon, visible from nearly every room, feel like a deliberate compositional element rather than coincidence. The open-air restaurant, sheltered beneath a loggia of raw timber poles supporting a pitched roof, extends the same material logic outdoors, while the infinity pool deck — travertine surround, teak loungers with charcoal cushions — frames the water with the kind of quiet precision that defines the whole property.

"Le Sereno was perfect. Our family of four stayed in a villa just steps up the hill, overlooking Grand Cul de Sac with sweeping views from our private pool. Though we had travel troubles on the way to St. Barth’s, the team at Le Sereno immediately connected with me via WhatsApp, adjusting plans in real time and ensuring our arrival was seamless. Their driver, Israel, met us at the dock and whisked us to the hotel effortlessly. Check-in was so smooth I barely remember it — service at the highest level. We dined at Al Mare on our first evening, where Andrea’s kindness set the tone for the week. Each morning we woke to the most serene rising sun over the lagoon. Days were spent between the pool — where another Andrea greeted us daily with a warm smile and attentive service — and the beach, swimming with sea turtles in the lagoon using the snorkeling gear they provided. The massages were exactly what we needed after early exercise sessions. We ventured into town for dinner at Bonito St Barth (expensive but worth every bit of it) and Black Ginger (exquisite Thai cuisine), enjoying shopping and strolling through Gustavia in between. One highlight of the trip was having a chef from Al Mare come to our villa to teach us how to make pasta. Le Sereno’s Italian heritage — with ties to Lake Como — is evident not only in the cuisine but also in the service, as nearly every staff member we met was Italian. Stefano and his aide Eric created a joyful evening, capped off with a dessert prepared right in front of us. Our beds were comfortable, the AC refreshingly cold, and the amenities top shelf. One of the best perks of the villas is the butler service — Lily took exceptional care of us and anticipated every need. We loved every minute of our stay. Because of the extraordinary team at Le Sereno, we are already looking forward to returning to St. Barth’s."

"In need of major upgrades. Stayed in the Grand Suite Plage. There is definitely a reason why they do not show you a picture of the entire bathroom with shower on their website. Far from luxury accommodations as my pictures will denote. Shower is more like you would find while camping. MOLD? growing on the bottom of shower. Toilet across the hall which did not work properly. Single sink. After complaining several times to management, they did not respond until the second last night of our stay where they offered to move us to a different room. Highly recommend you do not stay here until the alleged $25 million in upgrades are completed. Resort is very quiet and away from any of the nightlife or shopping that the island has to offer."

"Another lovely stay at Le Sereno St Barths. For my wife and I, Le Sereno provides the perfect stay: the quieter venue of Anse de Grand Case, professional and genuinely friendly staff, excellent food and wine, and lovely rooms."

"We enjoyed our four night stay here in a bungalow pool room with king bed. The best part of our trip was the amazing staff!! Everyone was friendly and super helpful! Many of them relocate here from Lake Como and are well trained in excellence. The location is nearby many nice beaches and dining choices and a short drive to Gustavia. Our LHW reservation included a delicious breakfast each day. We also enjoyed a dinner at Al Mare. Even though it was rebuilt after the hurricane it is being redone again in summer 2026."
