PB hotel design editorial

Between the twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose silhouettes dominate every sightline from the pool deck, a former nineteenth-century sugar plantation on St. Lucia's southwestern coast was transformed into Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. The estate's great house and workers' cottages were preserved and reinterpreted by London-based designer India Mahdavi, whose instinct here was restraint rather than reinvention — white-painted timber four-poster beds, tongue-and-groove board cladding, louvred plantation shutters, and dark-stained hardwood floors that carry the temperature of the tropics without tipping into pastiche. Exposed rafter ceilings pitched steeply above each cottage give the guest rooms their volume, white-painted rafters drawing the eye upward before the view through slatted shutters pulls it back out toward jungle and sea. The resort's 96 villas and suites scatter down the hillside toward a private beach on Jalousie Bay, their thatched palapas and limestone pool terrace framing an unobstructed corridor between the Gros Piton and Petit Piton. The restaurant interior, visible in the images, shifts register slightly — a tiered glass-rod chandelier in brass, warm timber wainscoting, and linen-upholstered barrel chairs alongside a gallery wall of vivid Caribbean-inflected paintings introduce a more polished, cosmopolitan tone while the dark hardwood floors and plantation fans maintain continuity with the cottages above. The whole property navigates the tension between colonial heritage and contemporary luxury with more honesty than most Caribbean resorts manage.

"Absolute bliss with uncompromising service and amenities. Viceroy Sugar Beach is a must visit for the discriminating traveler, and the first time traveler as well. If there was a way to rate higher than five stars, I would do so in every category. The tropical secluded feel, the quality dining choices, the cleanliness and choice of accomodation were second to none. Being surrounded by the Pitons and enjoying the 5 star property was something to definitely return for. My beach bungalow room was steps from the swimming area, yet secluded for that private afternoon of relaxation just outside my door. A must visit for anyone considering Saint Lucia, or considering a tropical getaway. I will definitely be back. Well done Viceroy Sugar Beach !"

"I cannot explain how wonderful this resort was when we visited for our anniversary. Accommodations were amazing! We had a beachfront bungalow and the view of the setting sun into the ocean every night from our covered patio along with a plunge pool was over the top! The resort is right between the 2 famous Pitons and you could see them from about anywhere you were outdoors at the resort. Our bungalow was beautiful. Very comfortable bedding, plenty of closet space, and the double shower was top notch. The air conditioning at night was great. The breakfast buffet was included with our stay and they had so many different things to try. All of it very good! It even included mimosas. We also tried the Latin fiesta buffet on Wednesday night and it was delicious, too. I couldn’t even sample everything I wanted to try. We also dined at the Bonte and Jalousie Grill other 2 on the beach and enjoyed our meals each night. Our favorite was the Cane Bar that we visited the last night that offered delicious small plates. It is next to the The Saltwood, their famous steakhouse that we sadly did not get to try. The Saltwood Bar had fantastic drinks made by talented mixologists. So original and so good!!!!! The beach was fantastic and the pool was large, beautiful and spotless! The most memorable thing was the service and 2 very special people who made our experience even more wonderful. Macrina was one of our butlers and when we arrived she practically scooped us up and immediately starting showing us our room, getting our luggage in, etc. We already miss her. She is a wonderful sincere beautiful person. She made us feel so special. We were contacted daily to see if we needed ANYTHING. Sometimes, even twice. We could contact our butlers, as well. I also want to mention Kingsley who worked the beach and pool area. He remembered our names from the first time we told him. He would check on us daily. He was working hard but always made us feel like we were the only people he was getting food and / or drinks for at the beach or pool. It was our 40th anniversary and this resort was THE perfect place to spend it."

"I had the most relaxing experience at this resort. The views are amazing and the staff was also amazing. I’m really big in customer service and they exceeded that. I had the deluxe cottage room and it was modern and nice. You felt tucked away to enjoy nature. We did have to move rooms and the staff was amazing to accommodate us for that. We moved to a beach front room which was nice also. Make sure the eat at Saltwood and The Cane Bar. Best food we had! Got to get a burger at The Jetty also!"

"Set between the two pitons, there is beauty everywhere you look. But aside from the beautiful setting, the staff and service here is on another level. If you are celebrating something, they truly go out of their way to make it special. We were celebrating our 5 year anniversary and our butlers Alden and Rornel went above and beyond to make it unforgettable!"

"I would give this 100 stars if possible! Breathtaking location reminiscent of Tahiti with white sand beach with calm clear water and amazing snorkeling steps into the water from the beach with free equipment, hammock and mats to float gloriously in the water. Multiple Thatched Tiki huts with the most comfy beach beds to lie on. Staff brought cold scented towels and fresh fruit popsicles in the afternoon. We were upgraded to a beach bungalow with a plunge pool and were absolutely thrilled! The views from the bungalow were just outrageous, with a bed and hammock right outside the door. They provide a complimentary beach bag and metal water bottles. Amazing rain shower, very large bathroom area, kitchen area and AC. The breakfast buffet is unbelievable- even an acai station, French press coffee, gourmet pastries, crepe and pancake wheel and a view of the Pitons. We loved Cane Bar restaurant, Bonte and Jetty burger. There is interesting art all over the property and the resort is modern coastal chic. Each restaurant has its own character with unique glasses and plates. There are so many healthy, vegetarian and gluten free options. Shout out to Kimron, Mikrenna and Mikaela who were great butlers. Resort never felt crowded, and there are not many tourists who come to the beach either. Great wifi and cell service, and a chat app for your butler. Easy ride from the airport around 45 min."
