PB hotel design editorial

Between the twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose silhouettes dominate every sightline from the pool deck, a former nineteenth-century sugar plantation on St. Lucia's southwestern coast was transformed into Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. The estate's great house and workers' cottages were preserved and reinterpreted by London-based designer India Mahdavi, whose instinct here was restraint rather than reinvention — white-painted timber four-poster beds, tongue-and-groove board cladding, louvred plantation shutters, and dark-stained hardwood floors that carry the temperature of the tropics without tipping into pastiche. Exposed rafter ceilings pitched steeply above each cottage give the guest rooms their volume, white-painted rafters drawing the eye upward before the view through slatted shutters pulls it back out toward jungle and sea. The resort's 96 villas and suites scatter down the hillside toward a private beach on Jalousie Bay, their thatched palapas and limestone pool terrace framing an unobstructed corridor between the Gros Piton and Petit Piton. The restaurant interior, visible in the images, shifts register slightly — a tiered glass-rod chandelier in brass, warm timber wainscoting, and linen-upholstered barrel chairs alongside a gallery wall of vivid Caribbean-inflected paintings introduce a more polished, cosmopolitan tone while the dark hardwood floors and plantation fans maintain continuity with the cottages above. The whole property navigates the tension between colonial heritage and contemporary luxury with more honesty than most Caribbean resorts manage.

"We could not recommend Viceroy Sugar Beach enough. Positioned between two beautiful mountain peaks, the resort included unmatched service, fantastic amenities, wonderful food, and incredible views. Every single staff member we encountered there was friendly and welcoming and made our trip even better. Only wish we had more time there!"

"Our family of 10 stayed in the Spice of Life Residence and had an unbelievable vacation. Alden & Karan took care of us and made us feel right at home. Alden is so kind, always had a smile and was available from early morning to late night - he's amazing! Karan was great with details, always so helpful. They made sure our experience was over the top. They were always joyful and made sure we had the best time. They helped us celebrate two birthdays. When we returned to the house after dinner they were ready to celebrate with music blasting and balloons everywhere - so fun! The people, the staff (Richie always so kind), the smiles and warm conversations from everyone who works on the resort are phenomenal. Beautiful people, beautiful resort! Elijah and Rick who were our guides diving and night snorkeling were a blast. The private pool, the beach steps down from the house, and grassy area allowed for games and family interactions to happen nonstop. The food at every restaurant was over the top delicious, it was hard to pick a favorite. The buffets offered two different nights was filled with amazingly delicious food. We did not want to leave. Hugs all the way around when we left. Thank you Spice of Life and your whole team for everything you do. You treated us like royalty. We can not wait to return!"

"We stayed at Spice of Life house at Sugar Beach Viceroy and had the most amazing experience ever. We were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived — warmly greeted with hand towels and a shuttle waiting to take us to Spice of Life. The staff members and our Butler made for a top notch experience a 11/10. Our butler was on top of everything and took care of any requests we had in a very timely manner. The staff was so attentive, warm, kind and went above and beyond to make our stay one we will never forget. Spice of Life was spacious, clean and set up for anything we could possibly need. The view was unbelievable between the two Pitons with its own private pool and yard to play games in (bad mitten, volleyball and ping pong). Each room was its own suite with nine rooms that each had a beautiful view with a huge porch. The food was phenomenal at every restaurant. Some of our favorites were the BBQ beach night, Cane Bar and Saltwood. Staying at Spice of Life was the highlight of our trip and I cannot recommend this house enough! Truly felt like the best place ever!!! We will most certainly be back."

"I went as an anniversary trip and loved it. Sugar Beach resort and Jade Mountain were very different but both luxury in their own way - and so I'm glad we split our trip up to do both. Getting a water taxi between them was so easy. If you go to a sugar beach and are celebrating an event - get reservations for dinner at Jade right before sunset and take a water taxi there. You won't regret it. Service: Staff is all super friendly and helpful. I'm not a huge fan of the butler service in general - more like a concierge with bigger tips expected. For example they weren't able to get us reservations for preferred times at the restaurants we wanted on site. Had I known this - I would have emailed the general resort concierge weeks before our trip and set up all my own dinner reservations ahead of time. I did this for Saltwood and was glad I had. Excursions book up too - I went and booked it all myself with local companies like Danny Boy ahead of our trip and worked out great. But when we needed something special like pre-ordered breakfast before our hike they were very helpful. Shuttles are also great but we walked from our villa 603 which was easy for us. Room: Super private luxury cottage villa. Pool is cold but provides a nice sound to listen to. Gym is great - go early or late to avoid mid morning crowd. Food: all the food was great. St Lucia is an extremely expensive island (for everyone not just tourists) so if your worried about a budget - I think it may be a stressful looking at the food bills coupled with all the tips. Ambiance is quiet at night but can get busy during the day - there is a more private beach on the side of the resort and that's were we hung out getting drinks. Location: Perfect for excursions. We hiked the Gros Piton and did the Morne Coubouril tour and zip line. I enjoyed both - my husband was struggling (he skips leg day) on the hike but I never was. Water is perfect here and while it often rains - it just rains quick bursts and doesn't ruin the day - it's why the flowers and plants are so beautiful here. Overall Sugar Beach resort is a really great spot for couples, friend trips, or families with babies and kids."
