PB hotel design editorial

Between the twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose silhouettes dominate every sightline from the pool deck, a former nineteenth-century sugar plantation on St. Lucia's southwestern coast was transformed into Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. The estate's great house and workers' cottages were preserved and reinterpreted by London-based designer India Mahdavi, whose instinct here was restraint rather than reinvention — white-painted timber four-poster beds, tongue-and-groove board cladding, louvred plantation shutters, and dark-stained hardwood floors that carry the temperature of the tropics without tipping into pastiche. Exposed rafter ceilings pitched steeply above each cottage give the guest rooms their volume, white-painted rafters drawing the eye upward before the view through slatted shutters pulls it back out toward jungle and sea. The resort's 96 villas and suites scatter down the hillside toward a private beach on Jalousie Bay, their thatched palapas and limestone pool terrace framing an unobstructed corridor between the Gros Piton and Petit Piton. The restaurant interior, visible in the images, shifts register slightly — a tiered glass-rod chandelier in brass, warm timber wainscoting, and linen-upholstered barrel chairs alongside a gallery wall of vivid Caribbean-inflected paintings introduce a more polished, cosmopolitan tone while the dark hardwood floors and plantation fans maintain continuity with the cottages above. The whole property navigates the tension between colonial heritage and contemporary luxury with more honesty than most Caribbean resorts manage.

"The breakfast experience at terrace restaurant at the sugar beach resort was exceptional from start to finish. The ambiance was serene and beautifully set, making it perfect for a birthday celebration. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we felt special, and the food was fresh, flavorful, and well-presented. I highly recommend this resort for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a relaxing and memorable breakfast experience, oh and the guy and t he second check point Travis was soo welcoming, big shout out"

"This place is a joke. Don’t stay here unless you want to get ripped off. Plenty of better places in soufriere. Have to take shuttles to get anywhere on the resort and they don’t have many so be prepared to wait. The staff are extremely rude and laugh when you need something. Don’t waste your money!!!"

"Sugar Beach is an excellent resort for rest and relaxation. The atmosphere is very calm. The food is excellent. The standouts were Saltwood and surprisingly, Jetty Burgers. The rooms were immaculate. We had a wonderful infinity pool in ours. It’s hilly, so be prepared to hike. The shuttle service is quick and friendly. The beach is great as is the water. The staff are incredible. Highly recommend. Getting around the island is a simple. We met a wonderful taxi driver named Barry who brought us all around the island for a good rate. He is extremely knowledgeable of the island and made some great recommendations for things to do and restaurants. +1 (758) 519-2527"

"My husband and I had a 4-night getaway to heaven. Sugar Beach is tucked between the magnificent Pitons. We could not have had a more peaceful and relaxing vacation. The staff made our trip - they were incredible in every way. It was by far my favorite Caribbean Island and I cannot wait to go back. The coolest part is that we made great friends with other visitors. We plan to return next April with those new friends with our families. And we will remain in touch. The beach front bungalo is the way to go. The food is outstanding. Just the walk to the spa is a treat! Snorkling was outstanding. Small hikes, the chocolate Book now and enjoy!"

"We just got back from Sugar Beach for 2nd year in a row and loved every minute. My 9 year olds cried leaving Canis at the Kids club. Our butlers M&M were fabulous."
