PB hotel design editorial

Canouan is among the least visited of the Grenadines — a 1,700-acre island of forested hills and Atlantic-facing beaches that has remained largely undeveloped precisely because its topography makes construction difficult. That tension between ambition and terrain defines the Mandarin Oriental Canouan, which spreads across the island's southwestern shore in a composition of low-rise stone-and-render pavilions stepping down through dense vegetation toward a crescent of white sand. The main hotel structures borrow from plantation-house precedent — deep-overhanging slate roofs, louvred shutters, wraparound verandas — while the over-water bungalows visible at the northern end of the beach introduce a Polynesian counterpoint that sits slightly uneasily alongside the colonial Georgian massing of the principal building. The interior languages across the property's 48 rooms and villas range considerably, and the images here reflect that deliberate range. Some suites favour a traditional register: marble-tiled floors, floral wallcoverings, upholstered wing chairs and Regency-influenced mahogany furniture with French doors giving onto turquoise water. Others take a more contemporary direction, with expressed hardwood rafter ceilings, sheer canopy beds in unbleached linen, and dark-stained timber joinery paired with woven jute rugs. The beach restaurant pulls a third mood entirely — raw driftwood poles carrying a thatched and canvas canopy above a wide-plank timber deck, the wicker-and-linen dining chairs and lantern centrepieces giving it the feeling of an elegant improvised structure that happened to end up directly on the Caribbean shore.

"We had an amazing 5 days at the Mandarin Oriental! The staff were always so attentive, courteous, and ready to lend a hand. The food was fresh and had something for everyone, whether you’re a meat lover or a vegetarian. A big thank you to Jaime Reid, our assistant, and Wingo Cheung, the hotel manager, for checking in on us all the time. Wingo joined us at the top of Mount Royal, and Jaime gave us a tour of the estate, took us to town to eat local food and enjoy beer and music. Thanks to Erasto for the snorkeling and archery lessons. The hotel is well-kept, and they even offer transportation to SoHo and other attractions on the island. The employees really work hard to keep the beach clean. Our favorite spot was L’ance Guyac for the food, sunsets, and snorkeling. Thanks to Venus and Romano for driving us around and keeping us company."

"I will begin with the most important part of our stay: the people of Mandarin Oriental Canouan. My wife and I have had the privilege of traveling extensively throughout the Caribbean, and the people at this resort stand out as the most welcoming, warmhearted, and kind people we have encountered. It was our pleasure to stay at the Mandarin Oriental Canouan from May 9–16. We flew from Miami to Barbados and then took Grenadine Alliance from Barbados to Canouan. The flight itself was fine, although GA could improve its communication. Upon entering the resort we were warmly greeted by Jamie, who welcomed us and introduced us to the hotel and our room. What an impressive treat to have a custom engraved tropical drink on our arrival. We stayed in a one-bedroom beachfront suite, and it was incredibly quiet, comfortable, and luxurious. There was an abundance of closet space, a luxury bathroom and the bed was exceptionally comfortable. The high-speed internet worked flawlessly. Everything about the suite exceeded our expectations. Breakfast quickly became our favorite meal of the day. We were welcomed each morning by the lovely Fiona and her sweet colleagues. The food and the daily invigorating juice shot was outstanding. Daily greetings from the always upbeat and positive Resort Manager, Wingo, were also a highlight of our stay. If you are looking for a party atmosphere on the beach, this may not be the place for you. Our room was just steps from the beach and chaise loungers, and we spent most days reading, sipping daiquiris and piña coladas, dozing in the sun, enjoying lunch by the pool, and repeating the cycle. It was pure relaxation. We spent one day at L’Ance Guyac Beach, which was calm and beautiful. Paula provided wonderful service on the beach, and the restaurant staff was engaging and welcoming. At the hotel, we dined at Lagoon Café and Tides for dinner and enjoyed both very much. I would have liked to see a few more menu options, but everything we ordered was delicious. Ophelia took excellent care of us at both restaurants and at Turtles Bar. She was an absolute joy. We also dined at L’Ance Guyac and were so impressed that we asked the chef to come out and take a bow. The meal was exceptional. We ventured off property twice for dinner, dining at Shenanigans and Soho Beach House, both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. A special thank you to Jaime for arranging everything for us and for all he did during our stay, especially the island tour and visit to the Sandy Lane Marina. The spa is breathtaking, perched on a hill overlooking both the ocean and the resort. Our massages were incredible, made even more relaxing by the sound of the waves below. One of the highlights of our stay was hiking at Mt. Royalton with the Resort Manager, Wingo, as our guide. Wingo was patient, attentive, and careful to ensure we felt safe and comfortable throughout. His positive energy made the experience even more enjoyable, and the views from the top were unforgettable. Everyone — from Wingo, Jaime, the housekeeping staff, front desk team, drivers (especially Bradley), beach and pool staff, and restaurant employees — went out of their way to provide genuine kindness, positivity, and true five-star service. May is an excellent time to stay at the Mandarin Oriental if you are seeking privacy and relaxation."

"Service — 5/5 The service here is genuinely exceptional — warm, friendly, and medium to high touch without ever feeling rehearsed or forced. The staff are welcoming in a way that feels authentic, which is harder to find than you’d think at this level of property. We had one issue with hot water during our stay, and it was resolved with impressive speed. That kind of responsive follow-through says a lot. Several staff members deserve a personal mention. Keyon led us on an incredible hike to Mount Royal — a highlight of the trip. Butler Ovincia was an absolute delight. Wingo and Kevin checked in on us regularly and genuinely made us feel looked after. And Gideon, Jennifer, and Fieona were not only wonderful at their jobs but wonderful people — the kind of staff you remember long after you’ve left. Location — 5/5 Stunning doesn’t quite cover it. Canouan is private, quiet, and genuinely peaceful in a way that’s increasingly rare. It feels like your own private island — not in the marketing-brochure sense, but in the way you actually experience it day to day. If you’re looking to truly unplug, this is the place. Food — 4/5 Great, not excellent — though one meal stands out as a real highlight: a dinner prepared by Chef Ajim that included one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Breakfast was consistently good quality, though the menu felt a bit repetitive over several days and could benefit from a few more rotating options. Coffee was excellent. To be fair, the more limited variety is understandable given the remote location and the fact that we visited at the start of low season. We also had dinner at the Canouan Estate a few nights and those meals were genuinely enjoyable. Room — 5/5 The rooms are enormous. Spacious, immaculate, and decorated in a classic style — lots of warm wood and marble that feels timeless rather than dated. The bathroom was a particular standout: a beautiful soaking tub, a shower with excellent water pressure and body sprays, and thoughtful finishes throughout. Spa — 5/5 Had two treatments during the stay and both were fantastic. The spa holds its own against any world-class property. The Sargassum Question Let’s address it directly, because anyone researching a Caribbean trip right now is wondering. Sargassum is a Caribbean-wide issue right now — it’s not unique to Canouan, and no resort can fully control it. What the Mandarin Oriental can control is how they respond to it, and the answer is: extremely well. There is a dedicated crew working hard every single day to clear the beach, and their effort shows. We swam every day of our stay and it genuinely didn’t affect our experience. Worth noting: the resort offers complimentary shuttles with beach privileges at several Caribbean-side beaches where the water is calmer. We took advantage of this one day and it was a nice option to have — but if we’re being honest, we preferred the beach right at the MO. That says something. If you’re on the fence about booking because of sargassum concerns, don’t let it be the reason you say no."

"An idyllic destination in the remote Caribbean Island of Canouan. The hotel is a piece of calm luxury and beauty. We had perfect weather with a welcome sea breeze. Beautiful rooms and the most comfortable beds, the Spa is beautifully located overlooking the Ocean and we had a wonderful couples Thai massage. Thank you to Wingo and your team, all of whom were attentive and fantastic. Jennifer in particular :)"
