PB hotel design editorial

Canouan is among the least visited of the Grenadines — a 1,700-acre island of forested hills and Atlantic-facing beaches that has remained largely undeveloped precisely because its topography makes construction difficult. That tension between ambition and terrain defines the Mandarin Oriental Canouan, which spreads across the island's southwestern shore in a composition of low-rise stone-and-render pavilions stepping down through dense vegetation toward a crescent of white sand. The main hotel structures borrow from plantation-house precedent — deep-overhanging slate roofs, louvred shutters, wraparound verandas — while the over-water bungalows visible at the northern end of the beach introduce a Polynesian counterpoint that sits slightly uneasily alongside the colonial Georgian massing of the principal building. The interior languages across the property's 48 rooms and villas range considerably, and the images here reflect that deliberate range. Some suites favour a traditional register: marble-tiled floors, floral wallcoverings, upholstered wing chairs and Regency-influenced mahogany furniture with French doors giving onto turquoise water. Others take a more contemporary direction, with expressed hardwood rafter ceilings, sheer canopy beds in unbleached linen, and dark-stained timber joinery paired with woven jute rugs. The beach restaurant pulls a third mood entirely — raw driftwood poles carrying a thatched and canvas canopy above a wide-plank timber deck, the wicker-and-linen dining chairs and lantern centrepieces giving it the feeling of an elegant improvised structure that happened to end up directly on the Caribbean shore.

Mandarin Oriental Canouan Reviews

"My husband and I recently revisited The Mandarin Oriental Hotel located on Canouan Island. This truly is a hotel experience like no other! The rooms are elegantly decorated and very spacious. I love the Mandarin Oriental Hotel pillows so much, that last year I placed an order online and ordered two! So divine! The beach is beautiful, with sand that feels like sugar on your toes. Beach attendants are available for your every needs. Water bottles are served in a wine cooler, nicely iced down. The staff rakes the beach every morning, and it is usually completely clean by 10:00 A.M. The Lagoon Restaurant is open for casual dining for lunch and dinner. The staff is superb, including, but not limited to, Stella, Roxelle, Landy, Jennifer, and many others. The Chefs whip up delicious meals in a gorgeous open tiled kitchen. Tides Restaurant is more formal, and could use more fresh catch-of-the-day fish on their menu. I wouldn't recommend bringing children under the age of 14 to this Resort, as there is nothing really to entertain them. This is an adult resort, as most guests sit on the beach and read. It is very quiet and peaceful. Wingo Cheung, was the acting Resort Manager during our stay. Wingo was always available, and took care of any issue that arose, or request we had. Wingo is very proactive, and was constantly walking through the property, making sure everything was meeting M.O. Standards. We enjoyed meeting him, and appreciated his attentiveness. This was a very relaxing place to visit, and I highly recommend it! Buon Viaggio!! (Happy Travels)"

"My family and I had a simply amazing stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Canouan. To get there (one of the 32 islands of St. Vincent & the Grenadines), you have to take a propeller plane about 45 minutes from Barbados (connecting from PHL or JFK for us). So, it takes an extra step or two to get to the island...but, you'll never regret doing it. The island and the people are lovely, and it's very quiet and secluded. Only about 2,500 people are on the island. The Mandarin itself is a beautiful property with sweeping views of the ocean from some of the largest suites you can imagine. Ours was 2,500 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 2 en suite bathrooms. The service level is unmatched, and you'll get to know all of the people who work there so well. Its the people that separate this location from anywhere else. They're really amazing, and we appreciated everyone and the care they took in making sure we had an incredibly unique experience. You'll have a dedicated person assigned to help you with everything, from dinner reservations to boat outings to transportation and everything in between. In our case, we had Raymano - what a great guy and a good sense of humor. And when he had 2 days off, Jaime filled in for him effortlessly. The drivers for us to and from the resort were also excellent and personable and we always had fun conversations with them. Venus, Gideon, Gerrie and Bradley were always there with a ride and a smile. Also, Keyon was the man to talk to about any adventures you wanted to embark on, from archery to boats to circuit training (he worked us, ha!) to sip and paint beachside...and so much more. We had a blast joking with him the entire trip. And of course, all of the servers were very special as well, always remembering you and doing special things for you. We feel bad if we forget any names from the trip because truly you will love everyone there. But, we had Jennifer and Stella wait on us almost every day - they were both wonderful. And we especially spoke often with our sweet Landy - she went above and beyond. In fact, Landy and Ophelia (another favorite of ours) surprised us with a bottle of our favorite St. Vincent hot sauce on the day we left. We put it on everything at each breakfast, and it was very kind of them to remember us like that. I never write reviews this long, but this is a special place with special people. If you have the opportunity, don't hesitate to take a long vacation there. You'll never regret it!"
