PB hotel design editorial

Canouan is among the least visited of the Grenadines — a 1,700-acre island of forested hills and Atlantic-facing beaches that has remained largely undeveloped precisely because its topography makes construction difficult. That tension between ambition and terrain defines the Mandarin Oriental Canouan, which spreads across the island's southwestern shore in a composition of low-rise stone-and-render pavilions stepping down through dense vegetation toward a crescent of white sand. The main hotel structures borrow from plantation-house precedent — deep-overhanging slate roofs, louvred shutters, wraparound verandas — while the over-water bungalows visible at the northern end of the beach introduce a Polynesian counterpoint that sits slightly uneasily alongside the colonial Georgian massing of the principal building. The interior languages across the property's 48 rooms and villas range considerably, and the images here reflect that deliberate range. Some suites favour a traditional register: marble-tiled floors, floral wallcoverings, upholstered wing chairs and Regency-influenced mahogany furniture with French doors giving onto turquoise water. Others take a more contemporary direction, with expressed hardwood rafter ceilings, sheer canopy beds in unbleached linen, and dark-stained timber joinery paired with woven jute rugs. The beach restaurant pulls a third mood entirely — raw driftwood poles carrying a thatched and canvas canopy above a wide-plank timber deck, the wicker-and-linen dining chairs and lantern centrepieces giving it the feeling of an elegant improvised structure that happened to end up directly on the Caribbean shore.

"An idyllic destination in the remote Caribbean Island of Canouan. The hotel is a piece of calm luxury and beauty. We had perfect weather with a welcome sea breeze. Beautiful rooms and the most comfortable beds, the Spa is beautifully located overlooking the Ocean and we had a wonderful couples Thai massage. Thank you to Wingo and your team, all of whom were attentive and fantastic. Jennifer in particular :)"

"I had an absolutely fantastic time at Mocan. We celebrated my birthday there, and it was amazing. Friendly staff, tasty food, helpful Butlers. The rooms were well kept. Overall, the property is beautiful and well-manicured. It was the perfect spot for our "Pink Theory" birthday weekend getaway."

"We just had an amazing family vacation! From start to finish, it was fantastic. Definitely a five star experience. Getting there I didn’t do any research on how to get to the hotel before I booked it. But Mezida, the reservations supervisor, was very helpful in giving me the information I needed. We flew to SVD. I think the hotel recommends Barbados, but we already had our main flight to SVD. We arrived too late for a commercial flight to Canouan, but Mustique Airways was really easy to book, at a time that worked for us. When we arrived in Canouan, hotel staff was there to pick us up and it’s just a short ride to the hotel. At the hotel, we were warmly greeted and shown our room. I can’t speak about any other rooms, but our room was the Oceanview Penthouse and it was gigantic! It is a short staircase walk to the beach, overlooks the beach, and is just beautiful. Bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, 1 1/2 baths, and a huge balcony. Eating As noted elsewhere, in low season there aren’t a lot of on property food options. The in-suite dining menu is small, but the staff seemed to be able to bring us anything we wanted from all of the restaurant menus. In addition, the staff was happy to take us off property to SOHO Beach House and to L’ance Guyac (which is actually part of the sister property Canouan Estates). These trips were free. All the staff we encountered at the restaurants were incredibly nice and attentive. The Beaches The main beach was not as calm as the Caribbean side, but it was super calm. There is a reef that protects the beach, so the waves are super tiny. The staff at the beach was ready to bring us anything we wanted from either of the restaurants serving lunch food. The best beach, though, is at L’ance Guyac. It is in the Caribbean side, is incredibly calm, and has great snorkeling. Ask at the hotel for snorkel gear and they will give you all that you need. Water sports I wish I could remember everyone who helped us with the water sports. Francisco took me out on one of the Hobie Cats and the wind was perfect. He was encouraging and helped me remember how to sail! We also did the tube ride and that was great fun. The staff member’s name who took us out started with a “C” but I can’t remember the rest (hopefully the hotel will know!). He did a great job of giving us an exciting ride without us falling out. Windsurfing and paddle boarding are also available but we didn’t try them. Turtle Experience Erasto took us out to the golf course to see the turtles and there were tons of them! If you have kids, do this. We even got to feed them. And if you need a jolt of energy and enthusiasm, talk with Erasto. He was amazing! Full of energy and excitement and really got our daughter excited about the turtles. The spa My wife did the spa twice and said she had the best massages EVER from Meri. Overall There is more I could write, but just know that everyone at this hotel just wants you to relax and have a great time. Parth, the tennis pro, came by at the beach and told us all about their tennis courts, but we just didn’t have time to go. Keyon, the recreation manager, went out of his way to help us with our activities. Wingo, the property manager, greeted us every day and made sure all our needs were met. His energy was contagious! Low season is quiet season, but that’s what we were looking for. The attention we were given by all the staff was second to none."
