PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the crescent of Charlestown Bay on the small Grenadine island of Canouan, a cluster of thatched pavilions pitched low against a hillside of dry tropical forest establishes the architectural grammar of Soho Beach House Canouan before you've stepped off the jetty. The property, which opened in 2017, was developed by Soho House and configured around a beach that remains among the most unspoiled in the southern Caribbean — the design brief, accordingly, was to avoid looking like a brief had been given at all. Thatched roofs in woven palm, whitewashed timber columns, and fieldstone sea walls built from locally gathered volcanic rock anchor the public pavilions to the shoreline in a manner closer to a fishing village than a resort compound. The interiors, handled in Soho House's characteristically accumulated style, trade the club's usual London-warehouse darkness for something considerably lighter. Bedrooms are lined in horizontal shiplap painted warm white, plantation shutters filtering the Caribbean light across bamboo four-poster beds dressed with block-print throws in ochre and botanical green. Wicker chairs, fringe-trimmed linen cushions, and dark-stained timber chests of drawers give the rooms the atmosphere of a well-loved colonial beach cottage. Outside, the open-sided restaurant and bar pavilions are furnished with teak framed sofas, rattan dining chairs, and string-hung enamel pendants — the whole composition sitting in the sand, unhurried, as though it had always been there.

"We made quite a journey to get here - flying from Barbados we had to take 2 small planes to arrive (not normal usually 1 small plane) but the staff were so attentive and communicative during the process. Ian picked us up at the small airport and drove us a very short distance to the hotel and when we arrived it was dark. There were fresh coconuts waiting for us and management there to greet us. Wonderful check in process. Every room is beachfront and the rooms are so comfortable (as I would expect at any Soho property). Dinner at the restaurant was lovely, and we loved the DJ. The lighting and ambiance is perfect. The island is very small and only three main lodging options: Soho, Mandarin Oriental and Canouan Estate Villas. Appreciate that all have reciprocal access to amenities. Daily transfer to the Mandarin and access to the pool there is appreciated. This is the place to come and relax and get away from it all."

"Beautiful place, lovely setting with a very nice tropical garden and great staff. But the food was really poor and poorly presented and way overpriced. All we could think was that the chef was off that night. Also they seemed to have run out of all the wines we chose saying that it was coming to the end of the season, mid March?? The staff were really very nice and efficient and the place is beautiful but the prices and quality of the food were very poor. We would have eaten better at a local shack."

"The location is quaint quiet and remote . The water is absolutely perfect turquoise, and clear to see feet on the bottom. The rooms are adorable, clean and well stocked . Bedding is fabulous.. There is only 1 restaurant on site and service at the beach was non existent. There is a bar at the end of beach which is a short walk . If you want peace , and you want remote , quiet an no one around . This is for you .."
