PB hotel design editorial

Erected in 1910 on Arsenalsgatan in Stockholm's Östermalm district, the former Skandinaviska Kreditaktiebolaget banking hall gave Bank Hotel its most indelible asset: a double-height trading floor whose arched colonnades, green-veined marble piers, and plasterwork lunettes survived nearly a century of institutional use intact. Swedish interior designer Martin Brudnizki, whose practice has shaped some of Europe's most atmosphere-conscious hotel interiors, led the 2018 conversion of the 99-room property, layering the original architecture with a palette of deep teal velvet banquettes, cascading brass-and-crystal chandeliers, and mahogany millwork that tilts the banking hall toward grand brasserie without obscuring a single arch. The guestrooms move between two registers — some wrapped in claret-painted walls with walnut-panelled headboards and brass bedside shelving, others quieter in sand and taupe, their tall sheer-curtained windows pulling in the particular grey-white light Stockholm offers for much of the year. Throughout, original artwork chosen by Brudnizki's team hangs above the beds rather than decorating them incidentally, and the hotel's intimate cocktail bar — walnut panelling curved into an arched recess, brass lattice bottle shelving backlit to amber, a floral-patterned Axminster underfoot — carries the feeling of a private members' club assembled over decades rather than installed all at once. The building's banking origins are never disguised; they are the design.

"We are a family of four from the US. We stayed for 3 nights in an Elegant Exceptional and Elegant Exceptional with Bath King rooms. The Elegant Exceptional with Bath was a larger room with more seating. Both rooms faced the entrance. What we loved: location (close to everything), fairly quiet neighborhood, price was affordable for Stockholm, included breakfast was delicious, service was great, restaurant was beautiful. What could have been improved: bathrooms was sparse, and housekeeping was cheap with the supplies…we ran out of tissues, were down to very little toilet paper, our soap was almost gone. They only put out the minimal amount of towels. Yet they gave us chocolate upon arrival and chips and olives the night before we left. Bottom line: very cute idea, love the repurposing of an old Bank. This hotel was made for the woman who spent her time at breakfast curating her plates just so and posing with her food in the aisle. Good value for your money."

"The hotel was fine but didn't live up to the expectations set by the other reviews, hotel description or price. Even though I booked the Elegant Classic (bigger than the Vault and Essential levels), the room felt cramped (even by European standards) and my husband and I were tripping over each other. The room was also very dark and the lighting awkward. The bathroom lighting was the worst - impossible to apply makeup in. A separate tabletop makeup mirror was in the bathroom but it wasn't lighted - best I could do was take it to the bedroom window in hopes of seeing if I applied everything correctly. A special breakfast was also advertised but it was not up to what we have experienced at other 5-star hotels. To get to the rooftop bar, you had to leave the hotel and go to an elevator next door. Location was great, room was clean and bed comfy. Overall the hotel was adequate but I felt like I paid way too much for what I received. The young woman who checked us in was lovely and helpful and the brightest part of our stay."

"The Bank Hotel exceeded my expectations and more. What an amazing property and the staff is world class! The room was fantastic, the breakfast perfect, amenities great, location ideal, it's so great to have that kind of experience and I'd love to return. Got a tour of the function rooms and anyone looking for a corporate or wedding event could do better. 😊"

"This is a wonderful, stylish hotel in a renovated building in the heart of Stockholm. Rooms are nice, service is of a high standard and location is great, walking distance from major tourist attractions and great restaurants. We also ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel, both of which we enjoyed."
