PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Strömmen channel directly opposite the Royal Palace, the sandstone-coloured facade of Grand Hotel Stockholm has defined Stockholm's waterfront address since Axel Kumlien completed the original building in 1874. Expanded and refined over the following decades, the seven-storey structure carries the ornate Renaissance Revival detailing — rusticated base, arched windows, bracketed cornice — that established the hotel as the city's ceremonial centre, the place where Nobel Prize laureates have been lodged every December since the awards began in 1901. Inside, the range of atmospheres is considerable. The Cadier Bar, named after the hotel's founding proprietor Régis Cadier, preserves its original dark mahogany panelling, gilt stencilled columns, and deeply coffered plasterwork ceiling hung with crystal chandeliers — one of the finest Victorian-era hotel interiors surviving in Scandinavia. The restaurant, refitted in a more contemporary register, uses floor-to-ceiling glazing, geometric stone flooring, and tiered crystal pendant lights to open the dining room toward the waterfront view. Guest rooms across the 270-key property move between two moods: some retain period gestures — herringbone parquet, starburst gilt mirrors, empire-style crystal drops — while others take a cleaner Nordic direction, with charcoal upholstered headboards, deep navy armchairs, and brushed-nickel chandelier fittings that sit closer to Stockholm's contemporary design culture than to the grand hotel tradition the building so confidently embodies from the outside.

"I booked my last 2 nights in Stockholm through the Leaders Club package as a splurge for my 50th birthday after 4 nights in the Arctic chasing the Northern lights. This provided me with the best rate and a surprise upgrade upon check in from an individual room to a superior room with breakfast included. Very impressed with the customer service and thought put into making the stay as smooth as possible. Staff was very welcoming and friendly at check in and throughout my stay and the property oozes old classic luxury. The room had all amenities you could need including an adapter for charging your electronic devices! Washroom was luxurious. Also appreciated the turn down service and water bottles every night. Buffet breakfast at the Verandah was a great way to start the day with a beautiful view of Old town and the Royal Palace and plenty of fresh and delicious options to fuel your body before a day of sightseeing and walking. Location is perfect for walking to all major attractions or using transit with many options nearby. A couple minor things for improvement that wouldn’t change my rating: 1- I had an issue with the TV turning on by itself every few min to the welcome screen each time I turned it off with the remote control. Reception sent someone right away to look into it. They ended up unplugging it as a quick fix. Maintenance was supposed to come the next day to check it but the same issue happened again the second night. I just unplugged it so I could sleep uninterrupted by the screen light. 2- I asked for a dinner recommendation from the concierge on duty on my first night and was disappointed with the restaurant suggested. It was in Gamla Stan and i was reassured it would be great despite looking like a tourist trap. To be honest, the smell of sewers upon entry turned me off. Food was also basic. It didn’t live up to the expectation or matched the calibrer of the hotel. So would recommend vetting dining options before suggesting them. Despite that, this was overall a very memorable stay and very high standards that will be hard to match."
