PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Strömmen channel directly opposite the Royal Palace, the sandstone-coloured facade of Grand Hotel Stockholm has defined Stockholm's waterfront address since Axel Kumlien completed the original building in 1874. Expanded and refined over the following decades, the seven-storey structure carries the ornate Renaissance Revival detailing — rusticated base, arched windows, bracketed cornice — that established the hotel as the city's ceremonial centre, the place where Nobel Prize laureates have been lodged every December since the awards began in 1901. Inside, the range of atmospheres is considerable. The Cadier Bar, named after the hotel's founding proprietor Régis Cadier, preserves its original dark mahogany panelling, gilt stencilled columns, and deeply coffered plasterwork ceiling hung with crystal chandeliers — one of the finest Victorian-era hotel interiors surviving in Scandinavia. The restaurant, refitted in a more contemporary register, uses floor-to-ceiling glazing, geometric stone flooring, and tiered crystal pendant lights to open the dining room toward the waterfront view. Guest rooms across the 270-key property move between two moods: some retain period gestures — herringbone parquet, starburst gilt mirrors, empire-style crystal drops — while others take a cleaner Nordic direction, with charcoal upholstered headboards, deep navy armchairs, and brushed-nickel chandelier fittings that sit closer to Stockholm's contemporary design culture than to the grand hotel tradition the building so confidently embodies from the outside.

"I am in Stockholm for the first time, arrived just this morning. Instead of the promissed taxi payment the driver charged me more than twice more of the arranged price. This was almost the price of the premium ticket with airfrance both ways. The taxi driver was forcing me to give him tips and pay for the small bottle of still water 50 krones. Extremely rude! Hotel stuff doest help to resolve the fraud or help women, they find this kind of attitude normal. Police told that the payment to the driver has to be done and then I have to solve this with the company! Can you imagine this would happen at night! The taxi driver was laughing at my face. This is simply an organised criminal gang! Finally at 13 h at the check in the reception struggled to find the room. The room was already prepared by the company, and the hotel knew about my arrival. They asked me for the credit card to charge it, particularly credit not debit. This is a big difference and this is important. It’s not me who suppose to pay the deposit and I didn’t trust this liars. People like this simply would charge as many cards as given to them, employ out all the credit. And then endless and useless emails from abroad to resolve this fraud once again which would be more simple to forget and they would laugh with this taxi driver. This hotel doesn’t have access to wifi, in thé restaurant they tell they don’t have any places and they are fully booked for lunch. This is the worst 5 star hotel I have ever seen, worst arrival, worst unhelpful and fake smily stuff. Not a safe place obviously. I am extremely angry and disappointed. I found this situations dangerous for women. I will speak with the director and will file a complaint at the police tomorrow in person. I will not leave this situation like that! Absolutely outrageous!!!"

"This is a magnificent hotel right in the center of everything! The waterview room was on the smaller side, but the facilities, restaurants and ballrooms were spectacular. The staff is professional and very friendly. They know how to provide great service. Walk no more than 10 minutes to Djurgarden, Old Town, the food market, museums, parks and shopping."

"To start, Stockholm is an amazingly beautiful city and the Grand Hotel all that one should expect from a Five Star establishment. As Leading Hotels members we were upgraded to a large Junior Suite overlooking the water and the Kings palace. Of particular note would be the recognition of the hotel staff. Friendly, plentiful and attentive to every need or request. A special shoutout to Martin at the concierge desk who provided invaluable sightseeing, advice, and restaurant recommendations. If I were to be critical one thing it would be the daily up charge for use of the in-house spa. As frequent travelers throughout Europe and while staying at Five Star hotels I cannot ever recall being additionally charged for use of the spa. That being said, our stay, though pricy, was worth every Krone and made our stay in Stockholm memorable."

"There could not have been friendlier, more luxurious, or more environmentally sustainable hotel options than the Grand Hotel Stockholm while spending 4 days at an international event. I look forward to returning one day!"
