PB hotel design editorial

Directly opposite Stockholm's Central Station, where Vasagatan runs its busiest stretch, a mid-century commercial block of curtain-wall glass and horizontal banding became one of the Swedish capital's more considered attempts to build a design hotel from scratch rather than from heritage. Nordic Light Hotel, which has around 175 rooms across its tower and podium volumes, takes its name seriously: the ground-floor glazing floods the public areas with the particular grey-white light that Stockholm produces in abundance, and sheer curtain panels layered against the full-height windows diffuse it further, creating an interior atmosphere that shifts perceptibly with the weather and the hour. The lobby furniture arrangement visible here — a pale leather sofa alongside tubular-steel cantilever armchairs upholstered in burnt orange, accompanied by raw-birch side tables with sculptural cut-out bases — places the property in dialogue with twentieth-century Scandinavian modernism while keeping one foot planted in something more contemporary and irreverent. Guest rooms carry the same logic through a cooler register: limewash-effect plaster walls in dove grey, ash-framed bed bases with slatted detailing, teal woven throws, and cobalt blue rugs that pick up the steel-and-glass mood of the exterior. The restaurant grounds itself in warmer materials — a slatted pine ceiling curving to meet the structural columns, a long marble-topped counter running the length of the kitchen pass — giving the hotel its most resolved interior space.

About

Nordic Light Hotel is a contemporary design hotel in the very heart of Stockholm. Here, the Nordic heritage comes alive in every part of the facilities; in the lighting, the menu, the materials and the art. 2017 the Nordic Light Hotel went through a complete renovation and in collaboration with award winning architect Todd Saunders, a joint vision of what makes the Nordics so special, was formed into shape. The result, we dare say, is both inspiring and unique. All 169 rooms include free wifi, a bright and balanced interior design, maximum noise control and high-quality beds for a good night’s sleep. The interior design of the hotel was inspired by perhaps the most prominent of all Nordic elements – the light. The result is simple, clean and transparent in colour and shape, with an ever-changing light scheme.

"I can highly recommend this hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was excellent and there was plenty of food. The room was clean and bright. The restaurant food was tasty and good value. The parking in the basement was very convenient and felt very safe. The location of the hotel was great and in close walking distance to all that we wanted to see, but if you need to use public transport the staff at reception were more than willing to help. Overall very nice atmosphere in the hotel. I will revisit again on our next trip to Stockholm."

"We enjoyed our stay. Our room was large and very clean. The breakfast had a large selection and the food was tasty. The front desk was very helpful with suggestions and helping us figure out how to ride the busses and trams. Location was great with lots of shopping and restaurants within a short walk. I would stay here again."

"We had a wonderful experience at the Nordic Light Hotel. The room was very clean and the right amount of space for a family of four with two small children, the kids used the pull out couch and it was perfect. The food was fresh and the portions were generous. What made our stay really great was the staff, especially Deanna who was welcoming and attentive. The location was also perfect, a two minute walk from the train station."

"Sandra, the Spanish girlie, was amazing! I’m so glad she was the one to serve me my food and coffee beverage. She’s really funny and loves to listen to you and what you have planned for the day. She always serves you with a smile and never makes you feel like you’re waiting. Great person!! :)"
