PB hotel design editorial

Stacked into the dense residential fabric of Basel's Vorstädte quarter, where guild-era rooflines press against one another in an unbroken terracotta line, a crisp white contemporary building announces itself through layered timber-decked terraces rather than any monumental gesture. Art House Basel was built as a new structure rather than a conversion, and the facade visible in the images — white render, oak-framed glazing, generous balconies planted with clipped standard trees — carries the atmosphere of a well-considered apartment building rather than a hotel, which seems entirely deliberate. Inside, the rooms pursue a Japanese-influenced minimalism that feels at home within Basel's design culture: low platform beds in oiled oak, wide-plank floors in the same warm timber, wall-integrated cabinetry framing televisions flush with the joinery, and shoji-like ribbed-glass screens dividing suites into zones of light and rest. A single orange Eames DSW chair provides the one deliberate chromatic jolt against the otherwise white-and-oak palette — a knowing nod to the design-literate crowd that descends on Basel each June for Art Basel. The rooftop bar, named Lexx, takes a different register entirely: charcoal acoustic-tile ceilings, dark-painted walls, industrial pendants, leather-padded bar stools with contrast stitching, and a timber counter that catches the late afternoon light in a way that makes the whole room glow amber. It is, in temperament, a neighbourhood bar that happens to sit above a design hotel.

Art House Basel Reviews

"Art House Hotel didn’t look like the pictures from the outside so I was a little worried. But inside, the lobby was cool, modern and stylish. All staff were fun and friendly. Our room seemed to be upgraded as it was bigger than I expected. The bed was really comfortable! Huge windows looking out onto a small but busy pedestrian street. We had no problem with noise. Bathroom was neat and efficient and I really liked the Asia-inspired screens. Breakfast was good. Nice moody atmosphere and good coffee. Coffee and tea in the room is always welcome!! Overall a great stay!"

"The hotel is well located in an area of Basel with a multitude of bars and restaurants. It's around a 10 minute walk from the main train station, although tram routes are also conveniently located. Our spacious double room was on the 1st floor, and because it faced the front of the hotel it was noisy o the Friday night until the early hours. Overall the room was very nice, but there is a big issue with the lighting. The bathroom is split in two, with the shower and toilet in a separate room, but washbasin in the main bedroom. Unfortunately the lighting to both areas are on the same circuit, so if anyone wanted to use the toilet during the night, the area around the basin in the bedroom was also lit up. A major design flaw that must surely have been commented on by others and should be easily fixed??? The indoor rooftop bar was empty on the Thursday night and shut around 9:30pm. Friday evening was busier, but there is something rather cold about its ambience. There are plenty of hotels in Basel all around the same price and there's no compelling reason to come back to this one."

"We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were super, rooftop bar is a great little spot, rooms are comfortable, nice showers and toiletries, fun decor, neat balcony. In easy walking distance of the train station, zoo, minster, and Christmas markets (when it's that time of year). If you're an exercise nut, they have a membership with a very nice gym just a couple of doors down the street. Highly recommend!"
