PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Marktplatz and Freie Strasse, where Basel's medieval street grid opens into its commercial heart, a late nineteenth-century Historicist building with corner turrets, baroque cartouches, and a mansard roofline has been transformed into Hotel Marthof Basel. The five-storey structure — its cream stucco facade lit warmly against the Rhenish dusk — carries the ornamental confidence of Gründerzeit commercial architecture, the kind of building that once housed a savings bank or insurance house and has always announced its civic ambitions from the street. Inside, the design moves decisively away from any pastiche of that exterior. The lobby arrives in near-theatrical contrast: grey marble steps climbing toward a reception desk clad in black Marquina marble and brushed brass, globe pendant lights clustering overhead like a displaced constellation, Art Deco-inflected wallpaper panels framing the desk in gold and slate. The brasserie on the ground floor strikes a livelier note — bold diagonal mosaic tiling in charcoal and cream underfoot, a long dark bar topped in veined marble, Thonet bentwood and cane chairs at white-clothed tables, brass dish pendants overhead. Upstairs, the guest rooms navigate between the building's generous nineteenth-century window proportions and a contemporary palette of warm oak, fluted cabinetry, cane headboards, and circular rugs in sand and taupe. The effect throughout is a building held in dialogue with its own history rather than overwhelmed by it.

"My daughter and I booked a Deluxe room directly with the hotel. Devlin took the booking and we chose a room with bath a shower. I had lots of questions and all were answered. The hotel is right in the centre of the town close to the river. It is well insulated and you are not disturbed by the trams. The room was spacious and every little detail was in the room to make our stay perfect. Good lighting. Full length mirrors. Complimentary mini bar. Nespresso. Good closet space. Bathroom amenities. Sheets on the bed were dreamy. Just very good quality. Every day Evelin, Lynn and devlin carefully arranged dinners, wrote the tram numbers down, told us the best cafes, chocolate shops etc. we certainly would come back again. Thank you for the perfect stay."

"For a hotel like yours, it is essential to have an agreement with a nearby parking lot or a space where guests can park their cars and leave their luggage. I was given room 212 with the sink and mirror outside the bathroom, which I did not like at all. There is no privacy, and considering the price, having a full bathroom seems like the least you could offer. The room doesn't have convenient electrical outlets, for example near the bed (they're only underneath), and it doesn't have a Smart TV, which seems like the bare minimum in 2026. In addition, the staff was rushed during breakfast and never explained that there was a menu from which we could choose eggs or something else. The breakfast restaurant was always cold, the windows and doors are old so the cold comes in and you can hear the noise of the tram both at breakfast and in the room. The spa area doesn't really give you a sense of relaxation."

"Thank GOD we booked this beautiful hotel for our stay in Basel. It turned out to be much more than our expectations. The location could not have been better. Right next to famous Marktplatz in heart of Old Town. The room was very spacious compared to Swiss standard. Rooftop terrace was a great place for drinks in the evening which had amazing view of Old Town. The Bohemia bar and restaurant on ground floor was very popular with guests for breakfast and dinner. Another highlight was Boulevard terrace where one could sit for hours over coffee or drinks and watch the world go buy at Marktplatz. The tram connectivity outside was great help. One could reach station within 7/8 minutes. The service in all department was impeccable. The reception staff was always very very helpful. Worth staying..."
