PB hotel design editorial

At the junction of Marktplatz and Freie Strasse, where Basel's medieval street grid opens into its commercial heart, a late nineteenth-century Historicist building with corner turrets, baroque cartouches, and a mansard roofline has been transformed into Hotel Marthof Basel. The five-storey structure — its cream stucco facade lit warmly against the Rhenish dusk — carries the ornamental confidence of Gründerzeit commercial architecture, the kind of building that once housed a savings bank or insurance house and has always announced its civic ambitions from the street. Inside, the design moves decisively away from any pastiche of that exterior. The lobby arrives in near-theatrical contrast: grey marble steps climbing toward a reception desk clad in black Marquina marble and brushed brass, globe pendant lights clustering overhead like a displaced constellation, Art Deco-inflected wallpaper panels framing the desk in gold and slate. The brasserie on the ground floor strikes a livelier note — bold diagonal mosaic tiling in charcoal and cream underfoot, a long dark bar topped in veined marble, Thonet bentwood and cane chairs at white-clothed tables, brass dish pendants overhead. Upstairs, the guest rooms navigate between the building's generous nineteenth-century window proportions and a contemporary palette of warm oak, fluted cabinetry, cane headboards, and circular rugs in sand and taupe. The effect throughout is a building held in dialogue with its own history rather than overwhelmed by it.

"We had a fantastic weekend at this hotel and would happily stay here again. The location is unbeatable, right on Basel’s Market Square, with trams and buses just outside the door and the Rhine river only a three-minute walk away. It’s the perfect base for exploring the city. What stood out the most was the kindness and professionalism of the staff, both at reception and during breakfast. We were also pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a Junior Suite overlooking the Market Square. The suite, located in a charming little turret, was beautiful and made our stay even more special. Unlike many Swiss hotels, which are often impeccably clean and efficient but can sometimes feel a little impersonal, this hotel has real character and charm. The interior design has clearly been carefully thought out. Breakfast was another highlight. The buffet offered an excellent selection of cheeses, cold cuts, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, a variety of breads and jams, as well as several hot dishes. It is served in the beautiful Art Deco-style Bohemia restaurant, which adds to the experience. We had read a few reviews mentioning noise from the trams for rooms facing the Market Square. Our suite overlooked the square, and honestly, it wasn’t an issue at all. The double-glazed windows are very effective, and we slept perfectly well. The room was also very well insulated against the heat. We stayed during Basel’s extreme heatwave weekend, when temperatures reached around 39°C, yet the room remained comfortable throughout our stay and we never felt uncomfortably hot. Overall, this hotel offers outstanding value for money, a fantastic location, beautiful design, and exceptional service. A wonderful discovery that we highly recommend. Thanks everyone, please, do not change anything!"

"Stayed late March, had a lovely, spacious suite overlooking the Market Plaza. The room was excellent and very comfortable. The location was excellent and lots of shops, food options and tourism in the area. Short walk to the Rhine River. Hotel breakfast was good. Ideal stop at the end of our Rhine River cruise. Easy Tram Trip to/from the Main Station (BaselCard included free with your hotel stay)"
