PB hotel design editorial

Directly adjacent to the Bundeshaus — Switzerland's Federal Parliament, whose green copper dome frames the hotel's terrace in every image — the Bellevue Palace has functioned since 1913 as the unofficial annex of Swiss political power, the address where heads of state stay and where the country's diplomatic business is conducted over dinner. Designed by Eduard Joos in a restrained Beaux-Arts idiom, the sandstone facade rises six floors above the Aare valley, its mansard roofline and rhythmic fenestration carrying the same civic seriousness as its parliamentary neighbor. The 130 rooms were most recently refreshed with interiors that layer cream-painted paneling and deep crimson carpets with tufted velvet benches and metallic damask headboards — a palette that manages formality without stiffness, the fuchsia accent cushions providing just enough warmth to keep the grandeur from tipping into austerity. The restaurant, set beneath barrel-vaulted plasterwork arches supported by dark walnut wainscoting, deploys cascading crystal chandeliers and deep burgundy banquettes in a composition that draws clearly from the belle époque brasserie tradition. Outside on the terrace, iron pergola arches wound with seasonal planting frame a chequerboard-tiled dining platform where the Bundeshaus dome rises directly overhead — a proximity so charged that the hotel's political identity feels less like marketing than simple geography. Few European grand hotels carry their civic function this openly, or wear it with quite this much ease.

"From the moment we arrived, our stay at this luxury hotel in Bern was nothing short of exceptional. Nestled within walking distance of the Old Town’s medieval arcades and the Aare River, the location couldn’t be more convenient for sightseeing, dining, and exploring the city’s UNESCO-listed charm. Arrival & Check-in Check-in was smooth and welcoming. The staff greeted us warmly, handled our luggage with care, and provided a clear orientation to the hotel’s amenities and the neighborhood. The reception area is elegantly designed — modern touches balanced with warm, local character — and set the tone for the whole stay. Room & Comfort Our room was spacious, impeccably clean, and tastefully furnished with a subtle blend of contemporary luxury and timeless Swiss charm. The bed was supremely comfortable with high-quality linens, and the blackout curtains and electric shutters ensured a restful night’s sleep. We had large windows that offered a million dollar panoramic view; the views were bright and serene. The bathroom featured premium toiletries, fluffy towels, and a powerful shower with excellent water pressure and temperature range. Of course, the bathtub did not go unused each day. Little details — a welcome water bottle, a Nespresso machine, and an in-room safe — made daily life effortless and comfortable. Service Service was consistently outstanding throughout our stay. Staff members were professional, attentive, and genuinely friendly without being intrusive."

"Perfect week-end in Bern, in such an historical place. Book a room with view on the montains / the Aar or you will regret it!"

"We stayed here for two nights in a Tower Suite that we booked using the AMEX Fine Hotels and Resorts booking. I booked this because it had two full bathrooms plus a separate doored off room that my teen daughter could have as her own, albeit with a piece of exercise equipment in it. The hotel is gorgeous. While not on the 'main drag' for the historic district, Bern is small enough that any place you really want to get to is a short walk away. The neighborhood was quiet and felt safe, yet very close to convenience stores and dining. Our room was absolutely amazing. The two full bathrooms, main bedroom, large sitting room, extra room for my daughter, and the half bathroom made the room feel huge...which it was. There was a balcony overlooking the river with and the other windows opened up for ventilation. My only complaint about the room is that the thermostat was controlled at the hotel level. We were there at an in-between time when the temperatures at day and night varied just enough that you'd want to have the AC at times and the heat at other times. Our first evening, it was too warm because the day time temps were warm but the hotel hadn't turned on the AC yet. I had someone come up around midnight, and the solution was to lower all of the metal blinds on the windows and leave one window open a bit. That worked fine. I'd really like to be able to control the temperature on my own, but I get it. This wasn't a problem for us on our second night, as the temperature dropped and it snowed over night! We had breakfast on both mornings in the restaurant. The service was great, the buffet was good, and being able to order egg dishes off the menu was much appreciated. We needed umbrellas during our stay and were provided three without a problem. We sat in the lobby bar a few times and had some wine and snacks; great service and beautiful setting beneath the stained glass ceiling. We absolutely loved this hotel, the staff, and the food/drink options available. We would absolutely make this our hotel if we were to return to Bern."
