PB hotel design editorial

Directly opposite the Bundeshaus, where the copper dome of Switzerland's federal parliament anchors the Bern skyline, a Historicist sandstone palazzo has served the city's political and diplomatic class since 1859. The Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa fills that address with the particular confidence of a building that has always understood its own importance — the mansard roofline, arched arcade at street level, and wrought-iron balconettes forming a facade that the evening light transforms into something closer to theatre than architecture. A thorough renovation completed in 2011 introduced interiors conceived around a sustained dialogue with Paul Klee, whose Zentrum sits a short distance away; prints and works in his graphic vocabulary appear throughout the 99 rooms and suites, anchoring the contemporary intervention in something genuinely local. The guest rooms layer herringbone oak parquet, deep-toned accent walls in aubergine or graphite, and crystal chandeliers against white panelling — an arrangement that holds historical and contemporary registers in deliberate tension rather than forcing resolution between them. Jack's Brasserie, the ground-floor restaurant, belongs to an older Bern entirely: dark walnut wainscoting, brass candelabra lamps with opal globe shades, striped leather banquettes, and a gilded cornice frieze that has absorbed decades of conversation. Up on the rooftop terrace, the Federal Palace dome frames the view to the south, a reminder that this particular corner of the Swiss capital has always been where decisions — political, architectural, and otherwise — tend to get made.

"Old charm, high standards, well dressed and behaving personnel, very nice guest room - great idea the James Bond Experience - elegant lunge bar. Very nice location. This hotel lives up to the standard and expectation of high class Swiss hotels. To be mentioned Ms. Vivienne, who went the extra mile with kindness and professionality in order to accomodate a request I had. She's an asset to this property. As you may know, a scene "007 On her majesty's secret service" was shot here - on the balcony of room 411. The Schweizerhof Bern and Spa will bring it all back to its guests."

"My husband and I spent two nights at the Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa. It was our first visit to Bern, and the occasion was my birthday. Since we were taking the train from Frankfurt Airport to Switzerland, the Schweizerhof's location was excellent for us. The rail station is literally steps away from the hotel. Since it was a special occasion, I booked a junior suite. It was mostly very comfortable, with a sitting room, a bedroom, and a nicely appointed bathroom complete with a rainfall shower, a large tub, and what appeared to be television on the wall. The bed and linens were comfortable, and although I didn't have a chance to use it, the desk also appeared to be good for doing work. The room also had electric rollladens. The one thing I didn't care for in the room were the two chandeliers. My husband and I don't like overhead lighting. We prefer to use lamps. We were not able to use the lamps in the room without also turning on the chandeliers, which were very bright. The reception did send a technician up to see what he could do, but unfortunately, the chandelier lights were hardwired. I enjoyed the breakfast in Jack's Brasserie. The made to order dishes were excellent, but I really liked Phillippe, the waiter, who made my birthday extra special. He brought out a really delicious chocolate mousse cake and a lovely card from the staff. He's a real gem, especially at breakfast! One thing to be aware of is that the hotel is right in the center of town. If there is an event going on, you will hear noise. We happened to be at the hotel during Bern's annual city fest, and the noise went on all night. But this isn't the hotel's fault. I just mention it it for anyone who is a light sleeper. I'm sure when there's no city party, the room is quiet enough. I enjoyed the Bernese bear that was presented to us at checkout. The little bear shaped almond cake was a nice treat! Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would book again."

"Mostly great stay at one of the best hotels in the city. Very spacious room, luxurious bathroom products, overall accommodations. Turndown service and housecleaning was excellent. Front desk service was top notch, warm and friendly. Location is perfect if you are planning to use train system for daytripping out of the city. Jungfraujoch was a bucket list experience and the hike down from Eigergletscher to Grindelwald at the height of spring was a storybook experience. Our stay was almost perfect at the Schweizerhof. The security person in the foyer did aggressively ask us when we were returning to the hotel at 11:00pm one night if we were actually guests of the hotel as we were entering the front door. He seemed suspicious and acted like he didn’t believe we belonged at the hotel. It did feel like we were 'singled out' because one of us is a person of color, a mixed race person. We understand this is an issue in Switzerland and probably around Europe. It certainly is in the US. But we clearly entered the hotel and had room cards to go up the elevator, so the question felt unnecessary, hostile and racially motivated. After showing him the room card we were able to come upstairs. But he didn’t apologize or welcome us back to the hotel. Perhaps it is the policy of the hotel to ask guests after a certain time of day upon entering if they “belong” at the hotel. But it didn't go over well with us and left a bad taste in our mouths about the otherwise wonderful stay."

"Very spacious and nice room. We stayed in April during a bit of a warm period. The rooms apparently have air conditioning but the lowest setting is 20 Celcius and it didn't appear to do anything; not sure the room every cooled to 20 degrees. The lighting has some odd combination switches that turn more than one lamp on (and off) at a time but the switches and light control is very finicky. Close to the train station and right at the edge of the old town and attractions, very walkable location."
