PB hotel design editorial

Framed against the Eiger's dark forested flanks and lit from within like a lantern against the alpine snow, the Belle Époque facade of the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa has anchored Interlaken's Höheweg promenade since 1865. What began as the modest Pension Victoria expanded through successive campaigns of construction into the palatial five-storey structure visible today — its copper-clad dome and symmetrical classical elevations a textbook expression of the grand Swiss resort hotel at the height of European leisure travel. The property carries 212 rooms, and its public spaces preserve some of the most intact Victorian and Edwardian interior architecture in the Bernese Oberland, including the brasserie visible here, where gilded arched lunettes rise above a contemporary bar counter, allegorical ceiling paintings and carved plasterwork left undisturbed by successive renovations. The guest rooms balance period architecture — deep-set windows with generous floor-to-ceiling height, white-painted classical cornicing and panelled reveals — against interiors updated in a contemporary European palette of dove grey, soft sage, and plum, herringbone oak parquet underfoot and floral cushion fabrics adding warmth without period pastiche. The spa wing represents the hotel's most dramatic architectural departure: a barrel-vaulted indoor pool framed in dark structural steel ribs and globe pendants, its glazed end wall opening toward mountain greenery in a composition closer to an Edwardian railway terminus than a conventional wellness facility. Together, the layers read as a study in how a grand hotel accumulates meaning over 160 years without losing its essential character.

"My wife said “This is the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in” which is a strong statement given the places we have been to. The building, amenities, and the rooms are outstanding. Only issue I can think of with the room was our “king” bed was literally two separate twin beds next to each other with seep twin sheets and comforters. We could not sleep next to each other or we would fall into the crack. The level of service from the hotel staff was the best I have ever experienced. From the moment we walked through the front door they looked for ways to assist. Including the person who checked us in giving us a quick tour with information on the hotel/restaurants and walking us all the way to our room. Our luggage was delivered literally as she was walking out of the room. The breakfast buffet is one of the best I have experienced. Only serious issue we had was at the terrace restaurant/bar as the service was not up to par for a hotel of this class but I have done a separate review for that establishment as I thought it was an issue specifically with them and not with the hotel itself. Would highly recommend and if we go back to Interlaken we would absolutely stay here again."

"For a special birthday we decided to go there: la terasse brasserie - after arrival had to ask for the wine menu - ordered a nice bottle of veuve, took 15-20 mins to arrive. we also ordered an apero plaettli to go with the champagne, that came when we were almost finished with the bottle - we had to top up, re-pour our own glasses, no one seemed to pay attention - we ordered our food - my son ordered a beer, we had to ask twice (30 mins, later) before it came (they forgot) - the starters and main course where mediocre / so so - we had to ask once our wine glasses where empty if it could be filled up - never an ask “how was it”, “did you enjoy” or “would you like something else to drink” ? - waiting again and we had to ask if we could have a dessert - restaurant was empty by then… still no focus on the clients… - asked for the bill, they apologized for the service and took the desert off the menu - what difference does that make if you eat in a brasserie for chf584 - in one world TERRIBLE SERVICE for such a place, for sure will never go back there - when leaving no “thank you for staying with us, come again soon” - in my opinion this staff has no proper education. ridiculous - to top it off, went downstairs to the parking and could pay in any electronic form. thank god I had 2x chf5 coins… A disappointment all the way"
