PB hotel design editorial

Perched above Lake Lugano where the Ticino canton's Italian temperament softens the Swiss insistence on order, a Belle Époque villa with a steeply pitched mansard roof and cream stucco facades has anchored the lakefront since 1887. The Hotel Splendide Royal carries that late nineteenth-century heritage through 87 rooms and suites arranged across five floors, its exterior garden terraces now dressed with a row of canopied daybeds that extend toward the water in a gesture more Côte d'Azur than Alpine. The setting — Monte San Salvatore rising directly across the lake, the town's subtropical planting softening the shoreline below — does much of the work that other hotels spend fortunes to manufacture. Inside, the property navigates a deliberate tension between period grandeur and contemporary comfort without fully resolving it, which is precisely the point. Guest rooms are furnished in the language of European palace hotels — gold-framed Louis XV bergères, burl-wood panelling with gilt inlay, Murano glass chandeliers, tufted headboards in pale velvet — while the recently added spa pavilion pivots entirely toward the present: floor-to-ceiling glazing, dark stone pool surrounds, rattan loungers, and a crystal chandelier suspended over still water as a single connective gesture to the main building's decorative register. The glassed dining veranda, its ceiling draped in gathered gold silk and its chairs upholstered in damask, keeps Monte San Salvatore in frame throughout every meal — a view treated less as backdrop than as the room's defining architectural element.

Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano Reviews

"We went to the bar and asked to be seated for a drink. We were asked if we would also like to eat. We said yes but first we would like a drink. Bar manager was very rude and arrogant. We were told that all the empty tables in the bar were reserved, even though there were no signs on them. We were eventually offered a seat on a couch in the middle of the eating area. We ordered a drink and sat there for 45 minutes and got up and left in disgust as the tables in the bar were still empty. We went to our room and ordered room service. The next day we went out for drinks and dinner and had a wonderful time."

"I chose Hotel Splendide Royal specifically because it is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, and unfortunately the experience was far below what I expected from a hotel carrying this distinction. The accommodation and overall service did not reflect the standard I associate with this category of hotel. Basic bathroom amenities were incomplete. After I raised the issue, only a toothbrush and a bar of soap were provided; there was no bath sponge and the shaving kit was still not supplied. I also reported the very unpleasant quality and smell of the liquid soap and the poor quality of the shampoo. Unfortunately, I felt that some staff members were displeased by my comments rather than genuinely interested in addressing them. The food and restaurant experience was also disappointing and below the level I expected. I raised these issues with the hotel during my stay, but they were not properly resolved. What disappointed me most was the considerable gap between the standards I expected from a Leading Hotels of the World property and the experience I actually received."

"Second time at the hotel already tells something! Strategic location for our purposes. Nice installations and decoration. All staff helpful. Remark on breakfast, with small option of fruits on self service buffet."

"The property is in an excellent, walkable location. We were very diligent about our pre arrival instructions, which turned out to be pointless. Our boat confirmation was missed, and we weren’t able to check in until after 3pm, despite us confirming arrival times for 2 rooms, etc. Be wary of their shuffling to terrible restaurants. I had asked multiple times for suggestions on waterfront options, to which we were given terrible options. It all felt very shifty… You were not allowed to eat in pool area , so we had to keep our food 20 steps away from our chair…😵‍💫 Housekeeping didn’t come until 5pm one night… Just be wary, not a 5 ⭐️, def a 4 ⭐️"
