PB hotel design editorial

Perched above Lake Lugano where the Ticino canton's Italian temperament softens the Swiss insistence on order, a Belle Époque villa with a steeply pitched mansard roof and cream stucco facades has anchored the lakefront since 1887. The Hotel Splendide Royal carries that late nineteenth-century heritage through 87 rooms and suites arranged across five floors, its exterior garden terraces now dressed with a row of canopied daybeds that extend toward the water in a gesture more Côte d'Azur than Alpine. The setting — Monte San Salvatore rising directly across the lake, the town's subtropical planting softening the shoreline below — does much of the work that other hotels spend fortunes to manufacture. Inside, the property navigates a deliberate tension between period grandeur and contemporary comfort without fully resolving it, which is precisely the point. Guest rooms are furnished in the language of European palace hotels — gold-framed Louis XV bergères, burl-wood panelling with gilt inlay, Murano glass chandeliers, tufted headboards in pale velvet — while the recently added spa pavilion pivots entirely toward the present: floor-to-ceiling glazing, dark stone pool surrounds, rattan loungers, and a crystal chandelier suspended over still water as a single connective gesture to the main building's decorative register. The glassed dining veranda, its ceiling draped in gathered gold silk and its chairs upholstered in damask, keeps Monte San Salvatore in frame throughout every meal — a view treated less as backdrop than as the room's defining architectural element.

Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano Reviews

"We travelled from Milano Centrale to Lugano by train, and the hotel kindly arranged a complimentary shuttle pickup from the train station. This was especially convenient for our family, as we were travelling with four large suitcases. The drive to the hotel took only about 5–10 minutes. Check-in was smooth, and we were delighted to receive a complimentary upgrade to the Presidential Suite. The suite was incredibly spacious, with classic European décor, high ceilings, and beautiful chandelier that made the room feel elegant and grand. The room was clean, and the air conditioning worked well during our summer stay. We especially appreciated the thoughtful preparation for our children, with bedsheets and amenities ready upon arrival. The spacious balcony with its beautiful lake view was one of the highlights of our stay. Although the hotel is next to the main road, it was not noisy at all, especially after sunset, and we could fully enjoy the peaceful lake atmosphere. Breakfast offered a sufficient spread, and we loved the outdoor seating area with lake views and the sound of birds in the morning. Just be careful not to leave food unattended, as the birds may come over to enjoy it too. The hotel also provided us with complimentary Lugano travel pass which allowed us to enjoy free bus rides and other transportation discounts around the area. This made getting around very easy and convenient. We also took a paid boat ride to Morcote, a beautiful lakeside town with wonderful lake views after hiking up the hill. Using the travel pass, we were able to take the free bus ride back to the hotel afterward, which made it a great half-day trip. The hotel is also within a pleasant 10–15 minute walk to Lugano town, where you can find restaurants and shops. The walk along the lake was lovely and relaxing. One of the most memorable highlights was being able to rent a small boat and drive on the lake without needing a boat licence. It was a very comfortable and enjoyable experience. On check-out, the hotel also arranged complimentary shuttle service back to Lugano train station for our next destination, which was especially helpful with our large suitcases and made the transfer very easy. Overall, we had a wonderful and memorable stay at Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano, and the combination of excellent service, spacious accommodation, family-friendly touches, and beautiful lake surroundings made it a truly special experience."

"I had the executive room with lake view. Very nice with friendly staff and excellent service. 10-15 minute walk to downtown. But it was in the next building not the white building in the hotel photo. Nice overall experience, I recommend staying there."
