PB hotel design editorial

Among the car-free villages of the Swiss Alps, Saas-Fee holds a particular character — quieter than Zermatt, less fashionable than Verbier, and precisely because of that, a place where a hotel like The Capra can define the register of an entire street. The building, a five-storey chalet structure clad in warm larch timber with deep-set balconies and broad glazing, was completed in 2015 and fits the village roofline without apology, its massing borrowing from traditional Valais vernacular while the floor-to-ceiling windows signal something more considered within. Thirty-six rooms and suites unfold across the upper floors, the interiors working through a consistent material language of pale European oak flooring, exposed structural beams, dark upholstered headboards set against panelled stone pine walls, and wool throws in earthy tartan — mountain domesticity handled with genuine precision rather than folkloric shorthand. The antler bench at the foot of one suite's bed, the tweed armchair in terracotta, the framed alpine photography — none of it tips into kitsch because the underlying palette stays disciplined. Downstairs, the restaurant wraps guests in aged reclaimed timber, deep burgundy leather banquettes, and a grid of pendant lights that echoes the coffered ceiling above. The spa takes a different approach: stacked slate columns flank the indoor pool, while salvaged plank ceilings and a linear fireplace create a grotto-like warmth that earns its calm rather than performing it.

"We had a wonderful stay at The Capra Saas-Fee. From the warm welcome by Sandra and João to the excellent service throughout our visit, everything felt thoughtful and professional. The restaurant was a highlight — beautifully executed dishes and attentive service made every meal a pleasure. We also really enjoyed the spa, especially the heated outdoor pool and the salt room, which were perfect for relaxing after a day out. A special thank you to Alexandre, the driver who picked us up — he gave us fantastic recommendations on places to visit in the city, and we truly loved the spots he suggested. Overall, a fantastic experience with a team that genuinely cares about its guests. We would be very happy to return."

"What a wonderful hotel, my husband and I stayed at The Capra last month to celebrate my birthday and it was simply perfect. We had a suite (Room 32) overlooking the mountains and lower slopes and had everything we could need within the room. Two bathrooms, two rooms with bifold doors in between perfect for families or light sleepers! Minibar, great coffee machine and a large double balcony. The hotel is just what you would want in such a pretty location, chalet style and thoughtfully decorated throughout. The staff are excellent, friendly, caring and lovely to chat to. Most staff speak several languages and we felt so well looked after. The hotel has superb facilities, the spa is glorious with the outdoor pool being gorgeously warm and the beds around the indoor pool are heated for extra luxury. We enjoyed treatments at the hotel which were of a high standard, professional and relaxing. The food is equally good, the breakfast is A La Carte style so you just order what you would like and as many dishes as you can manage. They come out quickly we found, no waiting if you are in a hurry to get to the lifts early! The evening meals in the bar or the restaurant are also very good, a fair mix of dishes and very well presented. They do also offer a cake every afternoon in the bar area (which changes daily) this was a lovely treat after skiing and feeling rather exhausted! The hotel is larger than I thought, the spa is particularly spacious with sauna, changing rooms and plenty of relaxation rooms etc. There are also two yoga studios a gym plus a fun games room, library and plenty of spaces to relax. The ski in ski out does work well, the hotel has a cabin very close to the bottom of the slopes and you can easily walk there or the hotel will take you and collect you whenever you need. The cabin has toilet facilities, tea/coffee machine and it is lovely and warm which is just what to need at the beginning or end of the ski day. As you can tell we thought the hotel was wonderful, particularly the room and the staff who were delightful and charming which is quite rare to find."

"Beautiful hotel, excellent staff, very high quality restaurant onsite, more or less ski in / ski out, and a great onsite spa. Blows my mind this isn't on Forbes or Relais & Chateaux yet."

"As an out of Hotel guest my wife and I wanted to have a good lunch meal. Sorry but this was a very expensive tasteless meal experience. Each 48.- sfr for a tiny Schnitzel pommes frites….(dark meat looked not even veal used) and a salmon Norway farmed with kind of rice pudding no thanks , never again"
