PB hotel design editorial

At the car-free heart of Saas-Fee, where the village lanes give way to views of the Fee Glacier and the surrounding four-thousanders, the Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa has grown through several decades of renovation into one of the Valais's more convincing arguments for updating Alpine vernacular without abandoning it. The exterior presents the familiar grammar of Zermatt-valley construction — heavy timber balconies stacked with red geraniums, pitched rooflines with deep overhangs, white-rendered lower volumes anchoring the darker wood above — while the interior tells a more considered story about what that vocabulary can become. The guest rooms pair wide-plank whitewashed oak floors with reclaimed altholz feature walls, their weathered silver-grey grain set against upholstered platform beds in cream linen and tartan wingback chairs that carry a quiet Nordic-Alpine confidence. Wrought-iron candelabra chandeliers hang above the restaurant's exposed spruce roof structure, the room opening onto snow-covered village views through generous timber-framed glazing, green velvet tub chairs gathered around white-clothed tables. The contrast sharpens in the wellness level, where an organically curved indoor pool sits beneath a high white volume punctuated by clerestory glazing, a single iron chandelier suspended over the water as an unlikely connector between the rustic warmth above and this cooler, more mineral world below.
