PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in Alpine hospitality carry the gravitational pull of the lakeside promontory in St. Moritz where Caspar Badrutt's family first began receiving guests in the 1850s. The building that became Badrutt's Palace Hotel took its current form in 1896, when architect Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. gave the Engadine skyline its defining silhouette — a steep mansard tower and pitched slate roofs rising above the turquoise surface of Lake St. Moritz in a register that borrows from Loire château architecture while remaining unmistakably Swiss. The exterior massing visible from across the water, all red-shuttered fenestration and pointed tourelles, has changed remarkably little in more than a century. Inside, the property moves between two distinct registers. The grand dining room — coffered timber ceilings, crystal chandeliers suspended on long drops, crimson swag drapery against tall lake-facing windows, gilt-framed chairs upholstered in dusty rose and slate — preserves the ceremony of Belle Époque resort dining with genuine conviction rather than nostalgic pastiche. Guest rooms take a quieter tone: herringbone parquet underfoot, Persian rugs in soft indigo, upholstered headboards in champagne damask, and brass reading lights positioned over dark-stained writing desks. The spa addition, with its curved curtain-wall of floor-to-ceiling glazing enclosing an indoor pool anchored by raw Alpine granite boulders, introduces a contemporary geological drama that keeps the 157-room property from feeling purely retrospective.

"Fantastic old world hotel exuding charm, elegance, and cordial service! We enjoyed every moment we were there - an amazing breakfast buffet with the various foods presented in the most appealing manner in a high ceiling hall with windows offering simply magnificent views while enjoying music played on a harp; a massive infinity jacuzzi pool on the outside to play around and a large indoor pool with glass windows that took full advantage of the surrounding mountainscape; the impressive public areas with numerous mementos and artifacts; the breathtaking terrace overlooking the frozen lake; the efficient concierge service to reserve our dinner at a Chase Veglia restaurant (Pizzeria Heuboden) and visit to Paradiso; the convenience of train station transfers; and location right on Main Street with all the top name shops. Our room was comfortable with views of the town. Memorable stay and plan to come back!"

"The location is amazing. The amenities are exceptional. The pool/ wellness area including the gym is fantastic. Super good breakfast. Above all, the service was the best. We did not find a single problem, even a minuscule one. The entire staff is extremely well trained, we have never experienced this kind of service before."

"Although we didn’t stay overnight, we stopped by for drinks and high tea and it was, without a doubt, the best high tea experience in St. Moritz. The views are absolutely breathtaking, overlooking the lake and mountains, which makes the whole experience feel even more special. The service was impressively attentive and efficient, with genuinely friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. The tea itself was perfectly brewed, rich in flavor and beautifully presented. And the high tea tray… simply outstanding. A delicious selection of sweet and savory bites, elegantly arranged and full of delicate flavors. Truly a wonderful and refined experience highly recommended when visiting St. Moritz."

"Another unforgettable ski holiday at Badrutt’s Palace. We have been coming here for many years with our family, now also with two teenagers, and every time we think it cannot get better, but somehow it does. What really makes the difference is the service. It is warm, attentive and never feels procedural. Many small details show that the staff truly cares and that hospitality here is something natural, not something learned from a manual. You feel welcomed back, not just checked in. Breakfast is always a highlight for us. There is a wonderful à la carte selection, from poached eggs with avocado to chia pudding, French toast and the new croffels, plus a beautiful buffet with very high quality products. The Grand Hall is the social center of the hotel. We love the mix of classic dishes and Indian and Asian cuisine (we had the best Nasi Goreng ever). In the evening, the bar with Matteo and his team is a must. Perfect cocktails, great music and an interesting international crowd create a very special St. Moritz atmosphere. The concierge can be reached via WhatsApp 24 hours and really makes the impossible possible. The wellness area is excellent, and swimming in the outdoor pool, probably the largest in the Swiss mountains, surrounded by snow after skiing, is simply unforgettable. For us, it remains the benchmark for luxury hospitality in the Alps."
