PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Zermatt's car-free Bahnhofstrasse, where the valley narrows and the rock face rises almost vertically from the village floor, a cluster of five-storey chalet-massing blocks in timber-clad concrete has anchored the Hotel Schweizerhof since the mid-twentieth century. The exterior — broad Alpine gables, cantilevered timber balconies, and a facade that steps back to absorb the scale of the surrounding peaks — follows the vernacular grammar that Zermatt's building regulations have long enforced, yet a recent interior renovation has pulled the property decisively away from the dark-wood Stuben aesthetic that defines so many of its neighbours. Inside, the approach is quietly Nordic rather than hearthside Swiss. Bleached oak panelling lines the guest rooms from floor to ceiling, forming a warm but pale envelope around button-tufted headboards in dove-grey velvet and wool throws printed with Matterhorn topography in grey and red — a detail that manages to feel local without veering into souvenir-shop sentiment. The restaurant moves in a different direction entirely: a richly layered space where dark marble tabletops, amber leather chairs, and steel open shelving dense with curated objects — ceramics, animal sculptures, framed alpine photography — create something closer to a collector's library than a hotel dining room. The indoor pool, lined in pale blue tile beneath a dark panelled ceiling hung with fringed rattan pendants, completes a property that has learned to hold tradition and restraint in careful balance.

About

Schweizerhof Zermatt is a mountain home featuring simple but authentic luxury. A convivial refuge, bubbling with positive energy. Watched over by the peaks of the Swiss canton of Valais including the Matterhorn, this high-altitude setting both inspires and enthralls. Zermatt is the cradle of alpinism, no cars, the complete opposite of ostentation: the very name synonymous with adrenaline and emotions. The hotel’s open spaces encourage exchanges and fluidity. Informal lounges for getting together at any time, an enormous “show kitchen” with a view of the chef and his crew at work around an excellent menu, leather-bound books in all corners of the hotel.

"There are a lot of advantages to this hotel. It is only a 2-3 minute walk from the train station (although “transfer” on their electric vehicle from the train station is included in the room price). The train station is “right in town,” which means all the shops and restaurants were also very, very close to the hotel. Additionally, the hotel was recently renovated; both the public spaces. (lobby, restaurants, bar, gym), are very stylish and current. We had a Junior Suite and requested a full view of the Matterhorn. Very happy with our room 641. Lovely balcony with view of Matterhorn. Minuses: whomever designed the remodel did not consult a “lighting” professional. The public spaces (stairwell to the elevators and the stairwells themselves), are very dimly lit. I’m 65 with 20-20 vision and it’s dark! Same with the room (we had a Junior Suite)…the lighting was inadequate. In order to “see clearly” in the living room and bedroom area you need to turn on the 1-floor lamp adjacent to the sofa. Also, the air conditioning controls are limited and they may need calibration. While there is a thermostat control in the room, the minimum temperature allowed is 20-degrees C (68-degrees F). We visited in May, and the room was warm at night. Apparently, this is a known problem for the staff, because when we mentioned it a check out, they acknowledge the problem. Breakfast was a buffet and lovely. You can order off the menu and select buffet items at your pleasure. Everything was included; and the staff was great, particularly Laura."

"Schweizerhoff is very convenient for skiing. Gornergrat railway is 5 minutes walk and Sunnega and Matterhorn glacier express are a quick taxi ride away (I am not a fan of walking in ski boots!). Absolutely wonderful service. Great breakfast (thank you Laura) and restaurant. Ski lockers with boot heaters are a nice touch. Will stay again as soon as we can!"
