PB hotel design editorial

At 2,222 metres above sea level on the Riffelalp plateau, with the Matterhorn's pyramidal silhouette rising directly to the south, few hotel sites in the Alps carry a more precisely calibrated relationship between building and mountain. The Riffelalp Resort 2222m is reached exclusively by the oldest electric railway in the Alps — the Gornergrat Bahn — which deposits guests at a private station before the car-free plateau takes over, enforcing a deliberate separation from the valley floor below. The main building, a grand Belle Époque structure that traces its origins to 1884 and was rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1961 before undergoing extensive renovation in the early 2000s, presents the stucco-and-shuttered facade of a classic Swiss mountain hotel, its pitched roofline and symmetrical fenestration framing views that remain almost absurdly cinematic. Inside, the interiors work the full vocabulary of high Alpine warmth: coffered spruce ceilings, wide-plank oak floors, and walls clad in warm-toned pine establish a material continuity across the roughly 70 rooms and suites. The main lounge, visible in the images, layers Chesterfield leather wingbacks against a deep-carved stone fireplace with painted floral detailing, the combination suggesting a Valais hunting lodge filtered through a more urbane sensibility. Embroidered edelweiss motifs appear on bedding throughout, a quietly insistent local reference. The outdoor thermal pool, steaming against snow and framed by the Matterhorn, is among the most elemental images Swiss mountain hospitality can produce.

About

At 2222 metres, you’re a lot closer to heaven and in the clear thin air the stars put on their most breathtaking display. Reception holds the key to a heavenly experience. Feel relaxed in the beneficial mountain climate in the middle of fragrant pine and larch forests and with a spectacular view of the Matterhorn. Arriving is an experience in itself. As the rack railway climbs and the commotion of the village is left behind, sit back, relax and enjoy the majestic view of the Matterhorn. In the summer, the highest tram in Europe waits at Riffelalp station to take you on what is probably the shortest tram ride in the world to the Riffelalp Resort. In the winter, our porter will be happy to pick you up on the skidoo. Or you can make use of the short walk through the picturesque forest to listen to the silence of Riffelalp for the first time. In summer, Riffelalp offers a typical Alpine scenery with meadows and cows. In the midst of one of the most beautiful walking, biking and climbing areas in the Alps, the Resort offers a variety of all kinds of activities. In the winter, the Riffelalp Resort is in the middle of the world famous Zermatt ski resort - the ski slopes go directly past the hotel - and is a perfect ski-in, ski-out hotel. For anyone wanting to go on an excursion to the excitement of Zermatt, the village can be reached with the Gornergrat railway in just 20 minutes. Half-board guests can dine in our partner restaurants in the village. The hotel's train brings night owls back to the Riffelalp free of charge until 11.30 pm. Most guests prefer to stay in heaven on earth at 2,222 metres above sea level and enjoy the distance from the rest of the world.

"We are back again this year for another short stay and very sad that we will be leaving tomorrow as we could definitely do with a few more days at this fabulous hotel. I would describe myself as someone who is very particular, but there is not one thing that I would say is a negative. Quite the opposite; everything is properly wonderful here. The main thing though is the staff who are the most professional and naturally friendly team we have ever come across. Nothing is too much trouble and they always seem to want to find a solution or accommodate you. My son has a severe allergy and it’s the only hotel we’ve stayed at in Europe where we feel they understand and we can relax a bit. They made special food for him every meal and it was never any trouble. All the staff were aware so we didn’t have to go through the situation each time we visited one of the three separate restaurants. The waiting staff are all so lovely. It was a bit sunny at lunch today so we asked to move tables. The waiting staff said “no problem, we have something better” and one scurried off and in a minute had brought a massive umbrella from storage which was set up in no time. That is just one example of so many when the staff here find a way to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. All done with a smile and grace at the end of what has been a long season. At the end of each meal you are presented with a bill without a massive tip included. In fact there isn’t really a section to add one, so I hand wrote one on each slip as they properly deserve it. The fact that the staff all work so hard and are so friendly without any guaranteed tip goes to show that their recruitment finding the right kind of positive people and training are top class. I usually find many so called “top” hotels bad value for money. Yes, Riffelalp is expensive, but you get what you pay for here. An unbelievable location, wonderful facilities, the best ski area in Europe and staff that make the place feel more like home than a hotel. Thank you again to all the team at Riffelalp for making us feel so special again. You are the best! We will be back next year again I hope!"

"Great hotel, great staff, great location, recommend staying. All that said the ski room staff, who aren't part of the hotel were very sub standard."

"If I could give this property more than a 5 star rating I would, there are simply no words to truly encompass how exceptional our stay was. It was our second time staying, and expectations were exceeded. From the moment you get to the parking in Tasch the experience already begins with the seamless and effortless transportation and transition until you suddenly (without even realizing) have already arrived and our on the snow bikes on the way to the property. All the staff were fantastic, always kind and eager to help, anything asked was always received with outmost attention. The room was clean, modern, and ultra comfortable, even equipped with a humidifier to battle the dryness of that altitude. The food also fantastic, the breakfast was extremely well suited for the mountain, ensuring you could stay your day with a nutritious meal before getting to the slopes. The bar was spectacular, with the live music which gave that true traditional glamour, followed by meals at all 3 of the stupendous restaurants. Finally, the SPA is a world of its own, pure relaxation from the greeting of the staff to the top notch facilities. Safe to say it’s the Creme de la Creme of ski resorts! I really commend this property for the excellence they have established. It feels like stepping into a perfect hotel. I highly recommend it whether it’s for a family week ski trip, or a romantic weekend getaway. Will be back next year!"

"Riffelalp Resort 2222 is the perfect winter hotel—straight out of a fairytale. From arrival to departure, the staff goes above and beyond to create a seamless, unforgettable experience. The moment you reach town, assistance is already waiting to handle train tickets, luggage transport, and even sled rides up the mountain. The concierge team is exceptionally attentive to detail and makes you feel less like a guest and more like family."

"The stay at this hotel was nothing less than amazing. From the moment we arrived, Juan Carlos at the front desk was warm and inviting as well as informative about the resort and its amenities. The view of the Matterhorn from our balconies never got old. Anytime we entered the resort we were greeted with friendly staff. The housekeeping staff also deserve some recognition. We had our room serviced twice a day. I absolutely recommend this resort to anyone who enjoys quiet luxury."
