PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a rocky promontory above Zermatt's car-free village center, with the Matterhorn filling the skyline to the south in a way that feels almost confrontational in its proximity, The Omnia announced a new kind of alpine thinking when it opened in 2003. The building, designed by Swiss architect Kurt Aellen, arrives via a tunnel bored through the cliff face and a glass-and-steel elevator shaft — a genuinely theatrical entry sequence that frames arrival as event rather than formality. The exterior pairs red-cedar cladding with steel-framed glazing and curved glass pavilions that push toward the mountain view, the whole structure stepping down the rock face across five levels in a manner that feels geological rather than imposed. Inside, the interiors strike a tone closer to a Scandinavian-influenced modernism than to anything resembling traditional Valais chalet warmth. Guestrooms in the property's 30 keys are fitted with pale ash platform beds, charcoal upholstered headboards, USM Haller media consoles, and wool-blend throws in near-black — restraint deployed with precision rather than coldness. The AJ wall lamps visible in several rooms place the furniture in a mid-century European lineage. The restaurant beneath its perforated timber ceiling carries green-veined granite table tops, slender steel columns clad in polished stone, and conical woven pendant lights that generate warmth through geometry. The spa pool, enclosed in floor-to-ceiling structural glazing with black tiled surrounds, turns the mountain panorama into the room's dominant material.

The Omnia Reviews

"My husband and I travel quite often and have had the privilege of staying in many wonderful hotels around the world. Yet our stay at The Omnia was truly exceptional. We came to Zermatt to celebrate my birthday, and the entire team made the occasion incredibly special. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed and cared for. Walking into our beautiful corner room with its exceptional view was already a highlight — and the birthday balloons waiting for me made the moment even more memorable. Everything felt seamless from beginning to end. The transfer from the train station was perfectly organized and made our arrival completely effortless. Throughout our stay, the attention to detail and the warmth of the staff were remarkable — it truly felt like every guest was personally looked after. The restaurant experience also deserves special mention. The tasting menu surely deserves a Michelin star. I was also very impressed that the main tasting menu is vegetarian, with the option to add fish or meat. The team kindly accommodated different menus at our table — vegetarian for me and meat for my husband — something many restaurants hesitate to do. What impressed us most was not only the beauty of the hotel, but the people behind it. The service was thoughtful, warm, and incredibly professional. This was not simply great service — it was extraordinary. We are already looking forward to returning."

"We stayed at The Omnia in Zermatt as part of my 40th birthday trip, and while it was definitely a splurge, it was absolutely worth it. From the minute you arrive, you can feel that the staff is there to make sure you have everything you need. That level of service is truly what you are paying for, and The Omnia delivers on it in every way. The team was incredibly helpful both before our arrival and throughout our stay, making the experience feel seamless and special. The hotel itself is stunning. Its unique location above the town — accessed by the private elevator — gives you incredible views, including unreal views of the Matterhorn. It feels peaceful and exclusive while still being right in the center of Zermatt. The rooms were beautifully appointed and very large by European standards, which we really appreciated. One small call-out — and definitely not a complaint — is that while the bathroom was very nice and well designed, it was a bit tight and really only comfortable for one person at a time. The included breakfast may be the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever experienced. There were endless pastry options along with an excellent à la carte menu that was consistently outstanding. The ski room was another big plus, giving me a place to store gear and dry wet clothes without bringing everything back to the room. The real showstopper, though, was the spa area — the pool, hot tub, and relaxation facilities were incredible. After a morning on the mountain, it was the perfect place to unwind and recharge. I can’t say enough about the staff and how attentive and welcoming they were. This truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and The Omnia played a huge role in making it feel that way. Highly recommended if you are looking for a special stay in Zermatt."
