PB hotel design editorial

Marcel Wanders brought his signature maximalism to an unlikely address — a glass-and-aluminium corporate block in Glattbrugg, the airport-adjacent business district that sits just beyond Zurich's city limits — and the collision between container and contents is precisely what makes the Kameha Grand Zurich worth paying attention to. The exterior, a low-slung rectilinear volume wrapped in horizontal louvred cladding and floor-to-ceiling glazing, gives nothing away. Inside, Wanders layered Swiss folk iconography over a dark, theatrical palette: the oversized Scherenschnitte-inspired headboards in every guestroom translate the traditional Swiss paper-cutting craft into monumental lacquered panels, alpine silhouettes and heraldic motifs framed against chocolate-brown quilted leather wall panels. Persian-style carpets anchor the rooms in warm red and black, while freestanding oval soaking tubs sit exposed behind glass partitions in the suites. The public spaces push further into Wanders's characteristic blend of the grand and the provocative. The cigar lounge is fitted out in black Chesterfield leather — tufted armchairs with carved cabriole legs, floor-to-ceiling backlit bookshelves, a large photographic portrait presiding over the room with the atmosphere of a gentleman's club that has been slightly unhinged. The Italian restaurant counters with burnt-orange quilted banquettes arranged in sweeping curves beneath a domed ceiling medallion painted with tomatoes, the wall tiles drawing on Portuguese azulejo traditions. Across its 245 rooms and suites spread over multiple floors, the hotel sustains an argument that even the blandest business district can accommodate genuine design ambition.

Kameha Grand Zurich, Autograph Collection Reviews

"The rooms are very nice, they are clean, well appointed, and fairly large by European standards. Everyone at the front desk were friendly and helpful. Check-in was efficient and it’s very well located on the tram line making it easy to access the city while being close to the airport. The only negative was the breakfast which was just average. I always look forward to breakfast in European hotels which is typically far above US standards. Selections were limited and the quality/taste wasn’t quite there for the price charged. The staff in the restaurant weren’t the most welcoming in the hotel either."

"While not billed as an airport hotel, the Kameha is a short 3 stop tram ride (every 10 minutes) to/from ZRH and the closest Marriott property to the airport which is how I found myself checking into this very unusual property for one night prior to a morning flight. This is an Autograph collection property which is billed by Marriott as independent and featuring "unique Swiss design". Check-in was quick and my Marriott status was immediately acknowledged (more than the usual at an actual Marriott property). I was told that I was getting an upgrade and didn't pay much attention until I opened the door of my room to find a somewhat kinky James Bond theme throughout including red walls and maroon padded leather sliding doors on 2 sides of the bathroom that effectively opened it into the room, including a freestanding tub that basically was right in the center next to the bed. There was also a faux safe that opened to reveal the minibar and actual mini-safe. Other decor included a gold sequined sofa and plenty of mirrors. Not your average airport hotel! While seeming to be designed for a tryst of some kind, the room was actually quite comfortable with a choice of daytime, lounge and evening lighting, automatic blinds and a large TV. I'm not sure how many rooms of this type are at the hotel but they also feature very large suites that include among other things treadmills in rooms, etc. Worth noting that the hotel has a well-equipped gym on the top floor and breakfast in the morning (included with my Marriott status) was a large varied buffet served in the hotel's main restaurant. If you need to stay near the Zurich Airport, the hotel is definitely a change from a humdrum airport hotel and if you are looking for adventure this is definitely a perfect option."

"We stayed in the Kameha Grand Zurich for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday. It was close to the city however we decided to stay outside so we were able to see not the city centre. Occasionally we are out in the evening we take a taxi and during the day tome we jump tram and enjoy using the public transport. The facilities were good and the room was well-equipped and modern. The team was accommodating and the receptionist (young fella) on 15 Sept was so kind to let us have a late check out, which means a lot. The chef always made me a nice omelette in the morning."

"This was my stay at an Autograph Collection property and I was very impressed. First of all, from Zurich Airport, this is an easy journey of about 15 minutes tram (#10 or #12) to the hotel stop. Then maybe a 3 minute walk to the hotel. This tram line also went to downtown Zurich and the main train station. That is about 25 min (because of frequent stops.) I would absolutely stay here on my next stay because the quality and price of this hotel far exceeded being in the city center and paying triple the hotel price. Special recognition goes to the friendly and professional front desk representative - Mitja - who on multiple times used my name, recognized my elite status (several times), gladly answered questions and chatted while he checked me in. I was upgraded to the Workout Suite. There are multiple variations on suites, such as the James Bond Suite, the Space Suite, etc. My room had a treadmill, weights, a running track-marked floor and stretching wall. The room and bathroom were HUGE - occupying a corner with windows down the full sides of two walls. There were several Swiss inspired furnishings - like the bank vault style handle pulls and the desk lamp. My room had a separate shower and giant bathtub (featuring a chandelier over the tub.). The temp controls worked well and were easy to understand. The bed was very comfortable and in European style, offered separate duvets for each side of the bed. The duvets were just the right weight that I didn't wake up hot or cold. Even at max brightness, I could have used more room lighting - especially when packing up my suitcase. I thought the light switches were a tad hard to find and control when entering a dark room or turning them on in the middle of the night. I had the breakfast buffet in the morning and found plenty of offerings I liked. There were customizable omelets and the pastries were all incredibly fresh. I look forward to my next visit!"

"First off, this doesn’t look like a Marriott property and that too autograph collection. Hotel housekeeping is 0/10, they left rooms dirty on each day of our stay. Zero courtesy, never picked up trash or even care to take off towels on floor. Rooms are very small, amenities are sub standard, food at restaurant was bland and expensive. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. This is not the type of hospitality you get at Marriott hotels. Unwelcoming staff and rooms both were a showstopper."
