PB hotel design editorial

Nine medieval and Renaissance townhouses fused into a single address on Rennweg in Zurich's Altstadt — that structural archaeology is what gives the Widder Hotel its defining character. The conversion, completed in 1995 by Swiss architect Tilla Theus, preserved the individual identities of each house rather than absorbing them into a uniform whole, so the building contains within it centuries of accumulated fabric: Romanesque stonework, painted Renaissance friezes, baroque plasterwork medallions, and original timber roof structures left entirely exposed. The result is 49 rooms and suites that share almost no design DNA with one another, each shaped by the spatial logic and decorative history of the house it sits within. Against this layered historic shell, the interiors place deliberately contemporary furniture — Eames lounge chairs in walnut and leather, deep-buttoned headboards in pale sage and dusty blue, Versailles parquet floors inlaid with geometric precision — without any attempt to disguise the dialogue between periods. The restaurant August carries that tension forward, its tufted charcoal banquettes and steel-framed industrial windows set against an arched niche where a Renaissance floral fresco survives intact. The bar below, with its aged timber ceiling carved with decorative motifs and a backlit shelf running the full length of the room behind red leather stools, has the atmosphere of a serious drinking institution that simply grew into its surroundings. Theus treated history not as something to be preserved behind glass but as a framework worth living inside.

"We had an absolutely delightful stay in the Widder Hotel. It’s located right in Old Town Zurich and is developed from converted and adjoined historical buildings, yet everything feels brand new and extremely refined in its design—it gives the perfect feel of getting the old world feeling from the city with all the creature comforts and aesthetic pleasures of modern design and construction. Design is clearly a high priority—everywhere you look, the architecture, interiors, furniture, décor, are nothing short of artful. And they are done to cleverly mash-up the history and modernity. It’s almost like staying in a museum—it’s so beautiful. They have a farm they use to supply a lot of the food across the property and the food is spectacular. The breakfast spread and hot menu items, in particular, were one of the best I’ve seen—everything was so tasty. They also treated us to a welcome amenity that was a selection of sweet and savory snacks they made. And, we visited their bar, which is also gorgeous with an incredible menu. My partner is celiac and so we need strict gluten free with no cross-contamination to keep him safe. The hotel took this seriously from the moment I asked the concierge for help. The breakfast team was very helpful with navigating the options, and even brought him gluten free bread. Our server in the bar seemed to understand the issue and take it seriously. And, they even managed to make the in-room welcome amenity gluten free for him, which I would have never expected. We felt very safe with their team."

"The Widder continues to hit all its marks. The rooms are unique and charming, the location is excellent for business, shopping, and for dining. It is a pleasure to be a 5 minute walk away from such fantastic restaurants! The best thing about the Widder, though, is that the team there is just a level of service and efficiency that is above and beyond what you would expect. My daughter was ill and head. Concierge Katharina Baumann immediately saved the day, expediting a pharmacy visit and ordering an appropriate room service meal for my daughter. At the same time, Christian re organized our plans for the day. This is just a top notch hotel."
