PB hotel design editorial

Two landmark towers rising above Dunhua South Road in Taipei's Da'an district give the Far Eastern Plaza its distinctive paired silhouette — a sandstone-clad podium anchoring twin shafts of curtain glass and warm-toned cladding that catch the afternoon light over the Yangmingshan foothills. Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei fills the taller of the two, a 43-storey tower completed in 1991 that holds 420 rooms and suites across its upper floors, with the hotel's street-level presence marked by the colonnaded limestone base visible in the exterior image. The building carries the gravity of early-1990s Asian commercial luxury — confident in its massing, classical in its podium detailing — while the guest floors have been progressively refreshed to bring them into dialogue with current expectations. The interiors move between two registers depending on floor level. Standard rooms are finished in dark-stained timber wall panels and polished stone desk surfaces, with blue-grey geometric carpets and upholstered barrel chairs in oatmeal linen — disciplined, corporate, warm. Higher suites open considerably, replacing the panelling with pale plaster walls, macassar ebony furniture, and corner glazing that frames the mountain ridgeline to the north. The rooftop pool, set within a horseshoe of travertine columns at high altitude above the city, turns the surrounding skyline into an architectural backdrop at dusk. The hotel's cocktail bar takes its cues from the same era as the building: copper-clad curved ceilings, bronze screen dividers, and deep leather club chairs — a room that has aged with more conviction than it was probably designed to.

"Nice hotel in a good location. However the staffing at the horizon club rarely seemed to know what they were doing. It cost me $200 in unused vouchers as I ran out of time on check out."

"I mentioned that my room was very dark, and it was obviously old because it is indeed an older hotel, the window was also very dusty. I was disappointed to be spending the amount that I did for a very small room which I paid for three people. I mentioned to front desk and they could not assist - it is a pity became that was my dad’s first visit after nearly after 50 years ! I have stayed in shangri-la a couple of times in different countries. We have always look forward to the buffet breakfast however, it was mainly carbohydrates in different forms. Proteins were eggs, chicken breast for salad, meat balls and perhaps salmon … I am now in another Shanghai-la hotel in Hong Kong and I hope not to have mediocre breakfast again!"

"Lovely hotel and all the staff were very helpful and friendly. Really good selection of food for breakfast with Taiwanese, Asian Japanese and Western food. Location is good as is not too far from Taipei 101 and Freedom Square. Closest metro station is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel."

"I had a great stay, the hotel did a fine job across departments. It is a whopper with 420 rooms, but everywhere is sleek and well maintained. Taipei is a sprawling city, it’s hard to define what you’d call central, but the location of the Shangri-La is as well placed as any. My 101 View Room certainly did what it said on the tin, with its large, picture window overlooking the tower and beyond. These rooms are spacious, with comfy beds, beverage facilities and mini-bar. Excellent WiFi and plentiful sockets also. It would have been useful if there had been the option of brighter lighting for makeup etc. The gorgeous, marble clad bathrooms boast both shower and bath tub. I didn’t take breakfast, but dined in Shanghai Palace, which has good views and excellent service, though my meal was unmemorable. I really enjoyed both bars, the prettily decorated Li Bai which closes at 930pm, and the Marco Polo, a very ambient spot with magnificent views, serving till 12-12.30pm. Overall then, I was impressed with the Shangri-La Taipei, and could happily recommend it."
