PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Chao Phraya from the quieter Thonburi bank, where the river still carries the unhurried rhythm of old Bangkok rather than the commercial pressure of the eastern shore, The Peninsula Bangkok opened in 1998 as the first major luxury hotel to claim this less-trodden side of the waterway. The 39-storey tower, designed in a Y-shaped plan that gives the majority of its 370 rooms direct river frontage, rises behind a cream-painted classical porte-cochère whose pediment, balustrade, and clipped topiary hedges establish a formal arrival sequence quite different from the glass-and-steel lobbies that dominate the Silom corridor opposite. The interiors carry that same calibrated tension between Thai decorative tradition and the Peninsula Hotels group's signature register of warm timber, pale damask, and cosseted quietude. Guest rooms are furnished with dark-stained headboards inlaid with geometric fretwork drawn from temple architecture, the carved detailing set against cream damask wallcovering and thick floral-patterned carpeting that absorbs the city completely. Below, the pool terrace arranges a row of pavilions with steeply pitched sala roofs in green ceramic tile — a vernacular form transplanted into a resort-within-a-city setting, shaded by mature palms and frangipani. The riverside terrace restaurant, canopied in tensile fabric and fitted with low teak-armed lounge chairs, opens fully to the water, the Chao Phraya's evening light doing everything the design wisely leaves undone.

"We came to the hotel after some weeks in Phuket and souring areas. My wife got sick when we arrived, due to dehydration. The whole staff were amazing! We got all the help we needed at at service level The Peninsula worthy 😊 And after she got well we enjoyed the facilities to the full! We have stayed in a lot of luxury hotels, and this is one of the best!"

"Simply out of this WorldOur final few days in Bangkok were spent at the Peninsula and, quite honestly, we loved every second of it. From the moment we stepped aboard the hotel’s elegant mahogany shuttle boat we knew we had arrived somewhere rather special. The crew in their immaculate white seafaring uniforms set the tone immediately, calm, polished and quietly attentive. Even on the five minute trip across the river we were handed ice cold bottles of water. A small touch perhaps, but typical of the thoughtful service we experienced throughout our stay. Our luggage disappeared the moment we arrived at the hotel and magically reappeared in our room before we even had time to think about it. The room itself was superb. Beautifully appointed, wonderfully comfortable and with a balcony overlooking the river. In the distance we could see the striking outline of the King Power MahaNakhon Skywalk. Watching the river traffic glide past from that balcony with a cold drink in hand was one of the simple pleasures of the trip. The pool area is another highlight. Staff appeared almost telepathically with fresh towels, chilled water and little treats throughout the day. On one occasion when a tropical shower appeared out of nowhere a pool attendant gently ushered us into one of the charming Thai-style poolside houses just before the rain properly arrived. Within half an hour the sun was back and everything was dry again. Breakfast by the river was beautifully done and the service throughout the hotel was outstanding. Friendly, attentive and always delivered with genuine warmth rather than rehearsed politeness. One of the real treats was afternoon tea in the lobby. It was far quieter than the famous tea service at the The Peninsula Hong Kong which made it feel even more relaxed. We were served a selection of delicate Thai savouries and pastries, including an unexpectedly good octopus bite and a delicious little crab savoury. The tiny scones were accompanied by raspberry jam which more than made up for the slightly unusual cream. The staff handled everything with quiet efficiency, even dealing politely with a rather noisy guest so the rest of us could enjoy the calm atmosphere. It was a thoroughly civilised way to spend an afternoon. The Peninsula manages something quite rare. It delivers real luxury without ever feeling stiff or formal. You are simply looked after from morning until night. A wonderful hotel and a perfect way to end a trip to Thailand. We would return in a heartbeat."

"We spent 3 nights at this property and it is truly on of the most amazing hotels in the world. The grounds are immaculate, the room was large and well appointed, the pool and spa were both fantastic. But what truly sets The Peninsula apart are the people. Every single person we interacted with was kind, warm, and helpful. In the hustle and bustle of Bangkok this was a delightful oasis of calm and beauty. Can’t wait to go back!"

"The luxury you'd expect from a Peninsula property, in a very nice location on the river. The shuttle boat across to the other side was very convenient and always available when we needed it. We booked a transfer from Bangkok airport, since we were arriving late at night, and the arrival was very smooth - a greeter at the airport, smooth drive (45 minutes), and then whisked directly up to our room for check in. The breakfast buffet is amazing; although there really aren't any simpler options at the hotel (no coffee shop etc). So be prepared for a big breakfast."
