PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Chao Phraya from the quieter Thonburi bank, where the river still carries the unhurried rhythm of old Bangkok rather than the commercial pressure of the eastern shore, The Peninsula Bangkok opened in 1998 as the first major luxury hotel to claim this less-trodden side of the waterway. The 39-storey tower, designed in a Y-shaped plan that gives the majority of its 370 rooms direct river frontage, rises behind a cream-painted classical porte-cochère whose pediment, balustrade, and clipped topiary hedges establish a formal arrival sequence quite different from the glass-and-steel lobbies that dominate the Silom corridor opposite. The interiors carry that same calibrated tension between Thai decorative tradition and the Peninsula Hotels group's signature register of warm timber, pale damask, and cosseted quietude. Guest rooms are furnished with dark-stained headboards inlaid with geometric fretwork drawn from temple architecture, the carved detailing set against cream damask wallcovering and thick floral-patterned carpeting that absorbs the city completely. Below, the pool terrace arranges a row of pavilions with steeply pitched sala roofs in green ceramic tile — a vernacular form transplanted into a resort-within-a-city setting, shaded by mature palms and frangipani. The riverside terrace restaurant, canopied in tensile fabric and fitted with low teak-armed lounge chairs, opens fully to the water, the Chao Phraya's evening light doing everything the design wisely leaves undone.

"They are so polite and nice (staple of every Peninsula I visited) that they make you feel… bad. Undeserving of such courtesy, until you remember how much you are paying for it, then is more justifiable. Super nice people, excellent training, polite to the defect, obviously great management selecting, training and keeping them focus on quality. Wherever there is a Peninsula, I go. And cry when leaving."

"First I didn’t want to give them 1 star as well because they deserve zero star. When I check in, overall check in process is fine and staff I spoke was very nice and kind. After I check in I can’t find any plug near the bed which later found out they didn’t have any plug near bed but at that time I don’t know so I called operator to inquiry about this. However the operator can’t understand meaning of plug even I spelled out or explain to them. So I went to front desk to ask same question. The front desk staff offer me the extension code because there have no plug near bed side. Later house keeping drop extension code but they even care to help to install they just drop. And the extension code is not even universal plug which I think nice to ask me in advance. So my 1st stay at this property already turns disappointment from 1st day. Next day evening time, engineering team knock my door and after I response they rush to come without any explanation for reason to came. They only speak Thai and even I asked to speak English they keep speaking in Thai. Later found out they came because they need to fix something in the room which I didn’t requested so I informed them but they keep come inside my room and insist need to fix. And I wave the hand now they understand they need to leave. So I called to front desk to inquiry about this. 10 mins later duty manager called and explain the engineering team was informed wrong room number and manager apologized but not offered any compensation at all. He just called me and never show up to my room and when I check out he didn’t show up at front desk and staff who process my check out did not said apologize at all. Later I reported this issue to Global contact center in Tokyo and property manager called and apologized with compensation as well. This is 5 star hotel and can’t speak English is out of the question and how to handle or resolved the issue is not even standard. I never stay this property again and I suggest to do same for all as well."

"Stayed at The Peninsula Bangkok for a staycation over the Labor Day holidays and had a very enjoyable experience overall. While the hotel is certainly a classic property, it has been exceptionally well maintained and does not feel dated in a negative way at all. Instead, it retains a timeless grand luxury ambience that is increasingly rare to find in Bangkok today. We stayed in a Deluxe Suite with a panoramic river view, which was beautiful both during the day and at night. The suite itself was spacious with a very ample living room area, excellent bedding quality, and a very comfortable overall layout. The TV and in-room technology were also very good. Bathroom facilities were excellent as well, particularly the strong water pressure and large bathtub. The only minor issue was that the hot and cold water controls were slightly confusing to operate initially. Amenities provided were very nice and in keeping with the hotel’s luxury positioning. Service throughout the stay was excellent, especially from the front desk and housekeeping teams. Staff were professional, attentive, and warm without being overly formal. The pool area remains one of the highlights of the property with very good service and a relaxing atmosphere overlooking the river. Food and beverage quality by the pool was also very good and enjoyable throughout the stay. Breakfast was perhaps the weakest aspect of the experience — it felt rather chaotic during peak periods and the selection could be broader compared to some newer luxury hotels in Bangkok. However, there was still enough variety to satisfy most guests. One feature that continues to make the hotel special is the excellent boat shuttle service connecting guests conveniently to ICONSIAM and the BTS system. It adds a uniquely Bangkok charm to the overall stay experience. Overall, a very pleasant staycation and a hotel that still delivers classic luxury extremely well. We would definitely return again for another Bangkok riverside escape."
