PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of a teak compound that served as the regional headquarters of the Borneo Company — a Scottish trading firm that shaped Northern Thailand's teak trade in the late nineteenth century — 137 Pillars House takes its name from the stilted hardwood structure still standing at its centre. That original building, raised on its forest of dark timber columns and topped with a steeply pitched roof, anchors the property's eleven-acre gardens in Chiang Mai's Chiang Moi neighbourhood, and gives the whole enterprise its architectural authority in a way no new construction could replicate. The interiors, designed by Bill Bensley's studio, work the colonial planter register with genuine precision rather than nostalgic sentimentality — dark-stained four-poster beds with woven rattan headboards, herringbone-laid hardwood floors, brass bar trolleys, and ceiling fans turning slowly above tray ceilings edged in white plaster moulding. Accent colours shift between cobalt blue, crimson, and ochre across the property's thirty suites, each one hung with archival photographs of Chiang Mai and the Borneo Company's trading operations. The dining room set within the original teak structure draws on the building's own fabric for atmosphere — carved fretwork panels filtering garden light, louvred shutters, and a patterned carpet that echoes the ornamental woodwork above. Along the pool deck, a towering living green wall closes the garden off from the city entirely.

"137 Pillars House was the perfect start to our honeymoon. The hotel is absolutely beautiful: peaceful, elegant, and truly an oasis in the middle of Chiang Mai. What made the stay especially memorable was the incredible staff with notable mention of Ray, who went above and beyond with thoughtful recommendations, seamless help throughout our trip, and genuinely warm hospitality. Every interaction felt personal and caring. We left wishing we could stay longer and cannot wait to return!"

"My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Thailand going to Bangkok, Chang Mai, and Phuket. We both agree Chang Mai was our favorite stop for several reasons, but the main reason being 137 Pillars House. From the beginning, the service was extraordinary. The staff cared for our wants and needs, including our wonderful butler, Tuck. Whenever we need something or a recommendation, she was able to provide it for us. The minute we got into our room, we felt so special. They had a cake, mango, and a bottle of champagne for us to celebrate our honeymoon. We felt that kindness and generosity during the duration of our stay. One of the servers we interacted with during our stay, Torch, was incredibly thoughtful. We had a private dinner and he was our waiter providing us a marvelous meal. He was our waiter for breakfast several more times and even provided us his favorite meal. 137 Pillars is a beautiful place to stay and we highly recommend it to anyone who says there."

"We had such an amazing time here. Incredible service, an oasis in the middle of a busy city, and Ms. Tuck was our personal point of contact who arranged everything for us on the spot — from a football for the kids to an iPhone stand. The food was fantastic as well. Everything was super clean! We’ll definitely be back!"
