PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the wooded fringes of Chiang Mai's Umong neighbourhood, where ancient temple paths wind beneath a canopy of mature trees, Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai draws its architectural identity from the Lanna vernacular — the distinctive pitched rooflines, tiered gables, and dark-stained teak structures of northern Thailand's historic kingdom. The pool pavilion at the property's heart is anchored by a two-storey traditional sala, its steep hipped roof and open-sided ground floor framing a scene that could belong to a nineteenth-century nobleman's compound, while weeping willows trail into the water around it. The design team wove reclaimed timber and carved wooden screens throughout the grounds, the intricate geometric latticework visible in the yoga pavilion filtering light in patterns drawn from temple architecture. Inside the rooms, the Lanna framework gives way to something more precisely calibrated — exposed rafter ceilings painted white with dark timber beams, dark-lacquered floors, and a palette built around crimson silk accent cushions, monochrome-patterned bench ends, and paper-framed wall art in the manner of ink rubbing. Terracotta side tables and woven headboard panels in natural fibre carry the craft register through without tipping into nostalgia. The bar counter, finished in fluted dark stone with copper shakers catching the backlit spirits shelf, shifts the mood toward something more cosmopolitan as the evening settles in — a deliberate counterpoint to the meditative atmosphere the gardens sustain throughout the day.

"Spent a glorious 10 days at the Aleenta in Chiang Mai with a friend for a wellness retreat. I cannot say enough about how special the experience was. The entire staff are gems, and the accomodation, food, and location are idyllic. We had a special bond with the spa team, especially spa manager Ms Waew, Ms Nong, Ms Nan, and Ms Na, who not only provided excellent professional treatments in the spa, but also lead us in meditation, sound therapy, yoga and qi gong classes. What a talented team."

"I stayed at Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai from 30 April to 4 May 2026 on the Advance Purchase Rate with Full Board, in a Club Balcony Room — not a retreat package. I make this distinction deliberately, because the shortfalls below are not about unmet retreat inclusions. They reflect how the property presents itself to any guest, regardless of booking type. THE CORE ISSUE The homepage promises where “tranquillity meets transformation” — Vipassana meditation led by renowned masters, set in the “serene foothills of Chiang Mai.” None of this held up in practice. The property sits in close proximity to Chiang Mai International Airport. Aircraft noise is present throughout the day and into the night — a fundamental contradiction for a property built around inner calm and restorative rest. COMPLIMENTARY CLASSES The homepage states classes are available to all staying guests. One was offered across four nights; all others were chargeable. Daily access came only after a formal complaint. The classes — including the sound bath — were not led by masters as implied, and the room was very small and packed beyond comfortable capacity. The gap extends not just to access but to quality. One instructor, Nan, was a genuine exception — her Qigong session was excellent, and its contrast with the rest of the offering was telling. FOOD We booked full board and ended up dining out most evenings. Dishes had to be sent back, including a buffalo mozzarella salad where the mozzarella was spoiled. The breakfast buffet was not fresh — bread was stale, butter arrived in small jars, half melted. FACILITIES & BILLING The gym is small and the pool unsuitable for lap swimming. Prior to arrival, a duplicated meal plan resulted in an overcharge of THB 6,409.80. We were initially told this was non-refundable; a refund was agreed only after written escalation. IN FAIRNESS The rooms are well appointed and the staff genuinely warm and attentive. At its best, this is a 3.5-star property. The issue is not that it is a bad hotel — it is that it is presented as something materially different from what it is. That gap — between positioning and reality — defines the experience."

"Not only is this hotel stunning, but the staff here are some of the kindest and most professional people I’ve come across. It’s a very intimate hotel with a spa, classes and a restaurant on property. I had a wonderful 3 hour (!!) spa treatment with Na, did a fine dining experience and yoga and meditation classes. I can’t recommend Aleenta Chiang Mai enough!"
