PB hotel design editorial

Along the west bank of the Ping River in Chiang Mai, where the old British Consulate once stood, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort took over a site carrying more than a century of diplomatic history and chose to honour that layering rather than erase it. The resort's low-rise contemporary buildings — white rendered facades clipped with deep teak timber screens and broad overhanging eaves — step down toward the river in a composition that keeps the mature canopy trees intact, their presence visible in almost every image here, framing the long lap pool and softening the geometry of the architecture into something closer to a private estate than a hotel compound. Inside, the 84 rooms and suites establish a consistent material language: wide-plank ebonised timber floors, full-height teak wall panelling, rattan lounge chairs, and dark slate soaking tubs positioned beside the bed as if bathroom and bedroom were always one continuous space. Terracotta scatter cushions pull warmth from the otherwise restrained palette. The dining pavilion carries a different register entirely — an open-sided sala structure with exposed timber trusses, woven rattan chairs, and latticed screens filtering the last of the evening light, the Ping River visible through the treeline. The overall effect is one of deliberate calm: a property that has learned from its setting rather than competed with it.

"We had a great few days at the Anantara in Chiang Mai. The location is great, at the edge of the river, relatively close to many sightseeing places. Check in and introduction to the hotel by Khun Pim was excellent. She made sure that we were welcomed and well settled to our room, knowing all the offerings and features of the room & hotel. She also kept checking in with us throughout the stay, making sure we had all we needed. The room, yet not new, still has a very nice modern/thai/tropical charm, with clear lines, simple yet elegant materials and uncluttered decor. Not all things are practical like luggage storage or bathroom countertop space, but one can make it work. Overall, a nice mix of old style ChaingMai & modern understated luxury. One of the highlights was a dinner river cruise, that took place just for the two of us (I'm glad that Anantara did not make it a :minimum 6 people to take place-thing) - so we enjoyed the entire evening on the boat with lovely food and the expert guidance and catering by Khun Toei. She was so kind, funny and informative, we had so many (sometimes random) question about the things we saw or passed by. She did her best to keep us entertained and informed, truly offering a private guided tour of the ChiangMai riverside... thank you K. Toei, we will remember it for sure!! Breakfast buffet was excellent, with many choices from various parts of the world, satisfying all tastes and pleasures. Many plant based & "healthy" options as well! I had nice conversations with Khun Praem & Khun Eak (hope I have the spelling correct). They take their time, despite the venue being busy at times to connect with the guests and make the experience more personal. We also enjoyed some of the free and paid offerings at the hotel like Mocktail making (free), and a cooking class (paid), all fund and even learned some new things along the way... :-). Overall a truly nice, enjoyable stay, I would not mind at all to visit again some time in the future... Thanks"

"This hotel was an oasis of calm as soon as we arrived. Amazing reception and welcome. We stayed in the serviced suites across the road (there is a bridge) and our two bedroom suite was amazing and really well put together. The hotel pool was amazing and the staff really helpful. The breakfast buffet was another level and the best we have ever had. So many options and great à la carte picks. This is a fantastic hotel and well worth visiting."

"Coming from another hotel on our honeymoon trip - one that was also supposedly five star - made the difference here painfully clear. This hotel is not just pristine and beautiful; the service is exceptional, the location is wonderful, and everything simply works. We spent four lovely days here and are already looking forward to returning. Our room with the private garden was quiet, secluded, and magical. Sitting there with coffee in the morning, or champagne in the afternoon — it was simply wonderful. It would be unfair to single out any names, as every single person here did an outstanding job. From remembering us each morning among more than 200 guests, to anticipating our needs before we voiced them, to the warmth of every greeting - everything was simply perfect. I have tried to think of something they could improve. I cannot find a single thing."
