PB hotel design editorial

Along the west bank of the Ping River in Chiang Mai, where the old British Consulate once stood, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort took over a site carrying more than a century of diplomatic history and chose to honour that layering rather than erase it. The resort's low-rise contemporary buildings — white rendered facades clipped with deep teak timber screens and broad overhanging eaves — step down toward the river in a composition that keeps the mature canopy trees intact, their presence visible in almost every image here, framing the long lap pool and softening the geometry of the architecture into something closer to a private estate than a hotel compound. Inside, the 84 rooms and suites establish a consistent material language: wide-plank ebonised timber floors, full-height teak wall panelling, rattan lounge chairs, and dark slate soaking tubs positioned beside the bed as if bathroom and bedroom were always one continuous space. Terracotta scatter cushions pull warmth from the otherwise restrained palette. The dining pavilion carries a different register entirely — an open-sided sala structure with exposed timber trusses, woven rattan chairs, and latticed screens filtering the last of the evening light, the Ping River visible through the treeline. The overall effect is one of deliberate calm: a property that has learned from its setting rather than competed with it.

"First of all, we want to give a big thank you to all hotel staffs (at the restaurants, lobby, cleaning and spa), they were very helpful, friendly yet professional. They always greeted and offered help with beautiful smile and politeness. They made our stay was so special! From the first step into the hotel, we felt the relaxation with all the greenery. The hotel decoration mixed with wooden Chiang Mai and a slight touch of colonial style makes its very luxurious. The hotel is located by the Ping River makes its cozy with mild wind. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. Food at the restaurants both breakfast and dinner were testy with various choices and excellent service. JAO Ping river cruise was pleasant and very special. The spa was also lovely. We had Thai massage twice and hope we could have more. It was so calm and relaxing."

"My stay at the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, the service, attention to detail, and warmth of the team made this one of the most memorable hotel experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world. A very special mention must go to Tuk, the manager, who is truly outstanding. She leads with genuine care, grace, and professionalism, and you can feel her influence throughout the entire property. Tuk has that rare ability to make every guest feel personally valued and completely looked after. Her attentiveness, kindness, and calm leadership turned an already beautiful stay into something unforgettable. She is exactly the type of leadership every luxury property hopes to have. The resort itself is stunning — peaceful, elegant, and perfectly positioned by the river. Every detail feels thoughtful and refined, from the rooms to the dining experiences and overall atmosphere. Even while recovering with mobility challenges, I felt incredibly comfortable and supported throughout my stay. A true five-star experience in every sense. I cannot recommend Anantara Chiang Mai highly enough, and Tuk deserves enormous recognition for the incredible standard she sets."
