PB hotel design editorial

Standing on the site of Hua Hin's first-ever beachfront residence, The Standard, Hua Hin carries a particular kind of inherited weight — the weight of a place that invented a shoreline. Bangkok practice Onion channelled that history into architecture that feels at once foundational and unhurried: white-washed volumes with exposed aggregate surfaces, their facades articulated in a rhythmic relief of rounded panels that softens the massing into something closer to sculpture than construction. Opened in 2021, the 199-room compound spreads low across the land, preserving mature tropical trees that weave through courtyards and pathways, giving the whole property the atmosphere of a private estate rather than a resort. Inside, the interiors — led by Shelley Kwok Design and Studio Freehand alongside Standard International's own design team under Chief Design Officer Verena Haller — translate that exterior warmth into rooms built around pale timber headboards with softly radiused corners, sisal underfoot, and ceramic bench stools with a distinctly mid-century sculptural quality. The palette runs through warm cream, sand, and washed oak, punctuated outdoors by marigold-yellow daybeds arranged across a manicured lawn that steps down toward a beachside terrace shaded with palapa umbrellas. The whole composition draws a conscious line back to The Standard Spa, Miami Beach — that same collision of retro leisure and rigorous design intent, here given a Gulf of Thailand address.

About

Hua Hin has been a beloved beach getaway for over a hundred years, dating back to the construction of the railroad connecting the bustling metropolis of Bangkok with this dreamy seaside town. By the mid-1920s, it became the chosen holiday retreat for Thai nobility drawn to the undiscovered pristine coastline. Over time, this sleepy fishing village transformed into a popular coastal destination while maintaining its old-world charm and natural beauty. This beach town has been even further awakened with the arrival of our gorgeous hotel, The Standard, Hua Hin. And not to brag but, we made it on Conde Nast Traveler's 2022 Hot List as the only hotel in Thailand. The Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2022 are in and not only did you vote us the #1 resort in South East Asia, you also crowned us the #7 resort in Asia, and the #35 resort in the world. Our seaside retreat is nestled in a lush garden dreamscape with native flora and greenery, just steps from the Gulf of Thailand. Our colorful collection of 199 rooms, suites and villas is complemented by an innovative spa program seamlessly paired with a lively and vibrant pool scene, and a variety of drinking and dining options to suit every taste. There’s the Lido restaurant and bar for all-day indoor or al fresco dining, elixirs and fresh pressed juices at The Juice Café, and the impeccably restored Heritage House, Praça, for authentic Thai food and craft cocktails in an unparalleled setting.

"recently stayed here and wanted to share my experience, as while it didn’t start perfectly, the way the team handled everything truly reflects the standard of a five-star hotel. At the beginning of my stay, there was an issue with my original room which meant I needed to move. The alternative room initially offered wasn’t ideal for me in terms of location, and at that point it did feel a little frustrating. However, what really stood out was how the team responded and turned the situation around. After raising my concerns, everything was handled quickly, professionally, and with genuine care, and a much more suitable solution was found which completely changed my experience. The facilities are excellent, everything is very clean and well maintained, and the breakfast offers a great variety with something for everyone. A special thank you to Pueng (Guest Experience Manager), who was incredibly helpful over the phone and ensured everything was properly taken care of. Pare, who kindly showed me the room twice, was patient and lovely throughout. I’d also like to thank Fern, Mimi, Yimmy, and Nina at reception for their support and friendliness. This is exactly what you hope for from a five-star hotel, not that things never go wrong, but that when they do, they are handled with professionalism and care. The team here absolutely delivered on that. I’m now really enjoying the rest of my stay and would happily recommend this hotel based on both the service and overall experience."

"Pool area, room, and breakfast were amazing. The breakfast variety was great. However the breakfast queue was crowded and the pool area was also quite busy. The bathroom amenity kit should be prepared for two"

"This is a beautiful hotel located not far from the train station and walking street. It has direct access to the beach which is clean and not busy. The breakfast is amazing; they have 2 restaurants one for farang food and one for Thai food. I only tried praca, Thai restaurant and it was excellent. Staff were wonderful, especially nong chi. Also they have 2 gyms outdoor and indoor. The outdoor gym was classic with rope climbing and monkey bars. I definitely recommend standard hua hin for travelers!"

"Lovely hotel, interesting architecture If you like dogs you will feel like you are in a dog show. They even have pet towels. I love dogs, but dogs with paws on table at breakfast or lying on soft cushion chairs made for humans in the searing heat, mhmm not sure how this work from a hygiene standard point if view. My dogs would not be allowed this. Friendly staff, but not very efficient. Chaos at breakfast, stuff ordered never delivered. Bring coffee but no sugar no spoon, no saucers for coffee/tea cups. Not impressive at all. Feels you are in large mall food hall. Too many people for such a small buffet. Tables not cleaned etc. Seems not enough staff at hand. Staff at pool bar try their best but quality of cocktails is poor, cheap alcohol premium prices. Food is ok though. Comes from another place. Pool is very small for so many people. Beach is good but no attendance on the beach. Villa rooms ok but very very noisy air conditioning even at lowest setting. The more expensive ones have no lounge chairs while the cheaper one have loungers Location wise near centre of Hua Hin. Construction site next door. Sidewalk full of treacherous potholes. Stay alert. A good 4 star hotel. To finish on a positive note the most outgoing helpful and friendly staff we met was the villa pool staff and the cleaners."
