PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a forested hillside above Lamai Beach on Koh Samui's quieter southeastern coast, the resort that became Banyan Tree Samui solved a problem that defeats most hillside properties: how to distribute 88 pool villas across dramatically uneven terrain without either flattening the landscape or severing guests from it. The answer was a cascading village of individual pavilions stepping down through coconut palms and tropical canopy toward a private white-sand bay, each structure given its own infinity pool and framed views of the Gulf of Thailand. The massing, visible from the water as a series of hip-roofed forms dissolving into vegetation, avoids the stacked-balcony logic of conventional resort hotels entirely. Inside, the interiors work a considered version of pan-Asian luxe: dark-stained timber joinery framing floor-to-ceiling glazing, woven rattan wall panels as textural counterpoint to white plaster ceilings, and large-format artwork in lacquered gold and bronze providing focal weight above each bed. Coffered ceilings with backlit panels lend warmth to the villa rooms, while the open-sided restaurant pavilion — its bracketed ceiling articulated with dark timber banding, furnished with woven rattan club chairs and dark-wood dining tables — pivots to face the headland and sea simultaneously. The tiled infinity pool at mid-slope, surfaced in jade-green mosaic, functions less as amenity than as the resort's visual anchor, its color calibrated to echo the water beyond rather than compete with it.

"The location, setting, atmosphere, accomodation and service are amazing. This is my third time staying, this time we extended to two weeks, and during Songkran new year. Totally fantastic. The pool villas are massive, finished to a far higher quality than other places I have stayed in Samui. The staff are amazing."

"Our third time here and as usual, just excellent. All the same staff were still there and remembered us by name, which was really nice. The service is always excellent, Rainer and all at the breakfast buffet were just incredible and as before, the GM of the hotel Apple, was lending a hand as well, clearing plates etc, which I think shows that there is no role that is below anyone’s job title. Apple also remembered us and commented on how this kids have grown so much. As always, Khun Rang was on hand to give some Thai boxing lessons to my son, which was excellent. There are so many names I never got, but our villa host Fern was brilliant, as was our host from last year Nicha. When Fern was off, Khun Tak took over her role for a day or two, she was also excellent. It was lovely to see Khun Tu and the BBQ and Khun Dye at the Sands again, along with khun Gigg and all the other staff. Please do pass on our best wishes, the staff really do make this place so special!"

"We stayed at Banyan Tree Koh Samui for 10 days and had a really memorable trip. Banyan Tree itself is beautiful and peaceful and it’s in the perfect spot with easily the best beach on the island. We’re usually pool people but we ended up spending every day on the beach. The water is calm, clear and perfect for families. The free water sports were a huge highlight — we were snorkelling daily, paddle boarding, using the catamaran and even rowing. It was amazing for the kids!! Apple, the resort manager is incredible. You see her everywhere — driving buggies, clearing plates at breakfast, opening bottles of Prosecco — just constantly helping out and going the extra mile. I miss our morning chats at breakfast! Adirek, the rooms manager also looked after us so well. He gave us a room with the most breathtaking view. Our butler Beauty was amazing. She just understood how we like things without us having to explain and was always one step ahead in a very easy, natural way. She helped us plan trips to see the temples and Fisherman’s Village, which made everything so easy. Little things really stood out — she’d send ice to the villa before we even thought about it, and when my husband mentioned he liked a wooden elephant, she surprised him with one, which was such a thoughtful touch. Always smiling, and just genuinely lovely to have around. Rainer, the food and beverage manager was also incredible. He’s constantly on the move — serving omelettes directly to tables, clearing plates, helping across the restaurants — just quietly making everything work. You really notice how much effort goes in behind the scenes. The food was definitely a highlight. Some of the best curries we’ve had were at Saffron — really exceptional and Ocha at Saffron deserves a special mention. She gave the best recommendations and was so bubbly and warm, we absolutely loved her!! Something you notice here is that the staff don’t just stick to their roles — everyone helps out wherever needed. You can really feel that they genuinely care & it makes a big difference to the overall feel of the place. The only thing that could be improved is the main pool, which feels quite uninviting and has very limited seating compared to the rest of the resort. Overall, it was a genuinely special stay and somewhere we’d happily return to. Missing all the amazing staff — thank you for looking after us and making us feel so special."
