PB hotel design editorial

Cascading down a densely forested headland on Koh Samui's northern coast, where jungle meets the Gulf of Thailand in an almost theatrical collision, the Four Seasons Koh Samui was designed from the outset around the principle that the landscape should do most of the work. Opened in 2008 across 25 acres of hillside above Laem Yai Beach, the resort's 60 pool villas and residences step down the slope in a loose, organic arrangement — their steeply pitched thatched roofs visible through the canopy from below, dissolving into the vegetation rather than asserting themselves against it. The architecture draws on Thai vernacular traditions filtered through a contemporary resort sensibility, with heavy dark timber framing, bamboo ceiling structures, and woven grass infill panels carrying the tectonic language from the hilltop restaurant pavilions all the way down to the beachfront. Inside the villas, the palette holds white rendered walls against deep espresso-stained hardwood floors, canopied beds draped in sheer mosquito netting, and rattan seating pieces that sit somewhere between plantation-era practicality and considered tropical modernism. Botanical prints framed in dark wood and ceramic table lamps glazed in sea-glass teal anchor the rooms in a quietly coastal register. The main restaurant pavilion, structured around massive round timber columns beneath an elaborate bamboo and rattan ceiling hung with wicker pendant clusters, frames uninterrupted views over the Gulf — the architecture becoming, in effect, a viewing instrument trained on the horizon. The infinity pool terrace, shaded by tall coconut palms reflected in still water, completes the resort's studied conversation between cultivation and wildness.

"Four Seasons Koh Samui was an unforgettable stay. Our residence was absolutely stunning, situated at the top of the hills in the middle of beautiful jungle which gave us an incredible atmosphere of privacy. It was spacious, serenely quiet, and pristine in terms of cleanliness and comfort. The service was flawless throughout but Faeng, our estate assistant, deserves a special mention. She made everything feel effortless and tailored our stay so thoughtfully and beautifully. Every detail was handled with such ease, warmth, and care that we felt completely relaxed and looked after from beginning to end. We are so grateful for such a special stay."

"Our stay at Four Seasons Koh Samui in mid-February was absolutely excellent. From start to finish, the service and attention to detail were exactly what we have come to expect from the Four Seasons brand. Arrival & Villa The resort features a beautiful, intimate reception area with an amazing view where the check-in process is handled seamlessly. From there, we were whisked away by buggy straight to our villa. We were thrilled to receive an upgrade to a Family Pool Villa, which was perfect for our teenage daughter as she had her own room. The resort layout is divided into two main areas: the Residences on the left and the Resort on the right, which is closer to the beach. Both areas share the public amenities, including the main pools, restaurants, spa, and gym. Seamless Communication & Service A special mention must go to the concierge team. Our main point of communication was via WhatsApp, which made everything incredibly convenient. They did an excellent job managing our dinner reservations and were proactive in suggesting the seasonal dinner event at the Beach House (Za’atar). Additionally, the housekeeping team did an impeccable job with both morning and turndown services. Spa & High Accountability The spa is excellent; we had a few sessions during our stay; but what truly stood out was their professionalism. Our daughter had a facial using all-natural ingredients, but unfortunately, she developed a rash due to her extremely sensitive skin. When we shared this feedback, the Spa Supervisor was genuinely concerned and immediately provided a detailed list of ingredients to help us. Although we did not blame the spa or expect a refund, they insisted on waiving the charges for her session. We were very moved by their level of responsibility and the care they showed for our daughter's well-being. Dining Excellence Koh Thai Kitchen: The breakfast here offered an excellent variety of choices. In-Villa Dining: The service was impeccable. They provided a full restaurant-style setup within the privacy of our villa. Za’atar (Pop-up): As recommended by the concierge, we dined here and were so impressed that we booked it for two nights in a row! The food was memorable and unique. We truly hope the resort considers making it a permanent fixture. Facilities The main pool is excellent for swimming laps and, despite the resort being well-visited, it never felt crowded. Overall, it was a fantastic stay. Between the proactive service and the beautiful accommodations, we highly recommend this resort for families looking for both luxury and privacy."

"Overall this is an excellent resort, but there is one thing that needs mention and serious correction. For a resort as exclusive as this, you cannot have outside guests pay a day use charge and use your facilities, the beach area, the pool etc!! I am sorry, that simply does not work. I understand the management is doing this to maximise revenue, but it leaves paying guests like us feel extremely cheated. Why should we pay well above 60k++ thb when anyone can simply walk in pay a day use charge of just 5k thb and use your facilities?? I have not seen this at any four seasons or any other resort at a similar level across the world. This is not something any top resort would do and feels a bit opportunistic. I feel this might influence the decision of some people, it surely would have for me. I would not like to spend so much on a place that allows outside guests for less than 10% of the cost of what I am paying."
