PB hotel design editorial

Cascading down a densely forested headland on Koh Samui's northern coast, where jungle meets the Gulf of Thailand in an almost theatrical collision, the Four Seasons Koh Samui was designed from the outset around the principle that the landscape should do most of the work. Opened in 2008 across 25 acres of hillside above Laem Yai Beach, the resort's 60 pool villas and residences step down the slope in a loose, organic arrangement — their steeply pitched thatched roofs visible through the canopy from below, dissolving into the vegetation rather than asserting themselves against it. The architecture draws on Thai vernacular traditions filtered through a contemporary resort sensibility, with heavy dark timber framing, bamboo ceiling structures, and woven grass infill panels carrying the tectonic language from the hilltop restaurant pavilions all the way down to the beachfront. Inside the villas, the palette holds white rendered walls against deep espresso-stained hardwood floors, canopied beds draped in sheer mosquito netting, and rattan seating pieces that sit somewhere between plantation-era practicality and considered tropical modernism. Botanical prints framed in dark wood and ceramic table lamps glazed in sea-glass teal anchor the rooms in a quietly coastal register. The main restaurant pavilion, structured around massive round timber columns beneath an elaborate bamboo and rattan ceiling hung with wicker pendant clusters, frames uninterrupted views over the Gulf — the architecture becoming, in effect, a viewing instrument trained on the horizon. The infinity pool terrace, shaded by tall coconut palms reflected in still water, completes the resort's studied conversation between cultivation and wildness.

"We first decided to stay at The Four Seasons Koh Samui after seeing it as the setting for the TV show White Lotus. It showed a fabulous setting, wondrous rooms and amenities and endless service. But the reality topped even the tv version on all scores. It is the most magical place to celebrate any special time of life. You are more than a guest on vacation, but royalty among paradise"

"Our stay at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the warm hospitality, breathtaking surroundings, and exceptional attention to detail. The resort’s location is absolutely stunning, with incredible ocean views, lush tropical landscapes, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels like a private paradise. One of our favorite parts of the resort was the private beach. It was beautiful, peaceful, and the perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Koh Samui. The staff went above and beyond to make our beach experience special, often surprising us with complimentary snacks and treats throughout the day, including delicious ice cream, refreshing lemonade, and fresh watermelon. These thoughtful touches truly reflected the level of care and hospitality that Four Seasons is known for. The villas were beautifully designed, spacious, and comfortable, offering the perfect combination of luxury and privacy. The service throughout our stay was outstanding. Every member of the team was friendly, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to making our experience memorable. We especially enjoyed dining at Koh Tai Kitchen. The food was excellent, and the green curry, pad Thai, pad kee mao, and mango sticky rice were all highlights of our trip. We also appreciated the hotel’s thoughtful restaurant recommendations outside the resort. Based on their suggestion, we visited Phensiri, which turned out to be one of the best meals we had during our entire trip. It was a wonderful recommendation and added another special experience to our stay. The hotel team also helped arrange incredible excursions. Our driver for our Koh Samui tour was fantastic—patient, attentive, friendly, and very accommodating throughout the day. Whether we were visiting the Big Buddha, Coco Tam’s, or other sights around the island, he made sure we were comfortable and able to enjoy everything at our own pace. Our speedboat excursion to Koh Tao was another highlight. Our guide, Chao, was excellent—friendly, knowledgeable, and always making sure we were having a great time. The entire crew was professional and caring, ensuring that we felt comfortable and safe throughout the adventure. They even took the time to demonstrate how to properly use the snorkeling equipment, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui provided the perfect balance of luxury, relaxation, adventure, and genuine hospitality. The beautiful setting, exceptional service, wonderful dining experiences, thoughtful recommendations, and personal touches from the staff made this one of the most memorable trips we have taken. We would highly recommend this resort and look forward to returning in the future."

"I embarrassingly must admit that I chose to stay at the Four Seasons Koh Samui after hearing that the HBO show White Lotus was filmed here. When I arrived, I discovered that while it was indeed filmed in the villas (multi bedroom rooms), the show was NOT filmed at the rest of the resort. So what I had expected to see as the beautiful hotel grounds that I saw on the show was NOT what the Four Seasons Koh Samui is like in real life. In reality the hotel grounds are very jungly and not gorgeous like how they are in the show. The spa also is not the same spa how it is on the show (nor is the lobby, hotel grounds, etc. = none of it looks how it did on the show = other than the villa rooms) Why I gave this hotel a 3 star review is not because of that though: it is because I have stayed at all the other top luxury resorts on Koh Samui (I've been coming her since the early 2000s, = I love Koh Samui it's one of my favorite destinations in the world) and the Four Seasons is actually my least favorite! It was my least favorite for many reasons including because it is horrible value as I paid $3,500/night (USD) each night of my stay but the experience was really bad and worse than $1,200/night hotels I've stayed at here on the island. The rooms were uninspired and the views weren't breathtaking which I expect for such a high price point. Everything just felt lackluster to me. I love Thai food but the dinner menu at Koh Thai was mediocre and felt generic like I could get it back in the USA. Also, all of their dining facilities are outside so you don't have any option for air conditioning so you roast in the heat and also get eaten alive by mosquitos. We got bit by mosquitos more at the Four Seasons than all of our other trips to Koh Samui COMBINED! Each member of my family got about 15 mosquito bites PER DAY because housekeeping kept letting mosquitos into our villa so we got eaten alive while we slept and then we got bit during our meals and during our buggy rides to our meals and bit everywhere in between. My husband and I even got mosquito bites in the spa while we were getting massages! (Why did the massage therapists not notice and let the mosquitos just bite us while our skin was all exposed during our 2 hour massage!??) It was awful and the first time that has ever happened to us. Another bad first was that my kids told me they were bored in the kids club and this was their least favorite kids club they've been to in their entire lives. Yikes! In conclusion, the reason I give The Four Seasons Koh Samui 3 stars (and not lower) is that all of the staff is very nice and helpful - as one should expect at staying at other Four Seasons since they are normally known for their excellent service and that was indeed true here and it was the only salvageable thing about our stay. The other redeemable feature was that the Thai Buffet Dinner Show had excellent food. Breakfast was nice as well. I do however, wish I had a Time Machine so I would go back in time and not stay here in the first place because by my second day here I was wishing the entire time I was at another Koh Samui resort instead."

"For me Four Seasons Samui was the stunning and amazing since first stepping in. The lobby’s view over looking the beautiful blue sea then heading to my pool villa by buggy. The pool villa was so beautiful, stunning view from the outdoor swimming pool. I did enjoy the delicious food in the evening and relaxing on the bed which was the most comfortable spot. The spa was so relaxing using the coconut oil which was I almost fall asleep from the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Another late lunch at the Pla Pla restaurant was amazing with the chives pasta then gaining the fully information about RUM from the Cocorum which having the entrance door from the Alcatraz. Every step, everywhere, and especially everyone at the Four Seasons Samui has been in best memory that I will absolutely return soon with my another half"

"Four Seasons Koh Samui was an unforgettable stay. Our residence was absolutely stunning, situated at the top of the hills in the middle of beautiful jungle which gave us an incredible atmosphere of privacy. It was spacious, serenely quiet, and pristine in terms of cleanliness and comfort. The service was flawless throughout but Faeng, our estate assistant, deserves a special mention. She made everything feel effortless and tailored our stay so thoughtfully and beautifully. Every detail was handled with such ease, warmth, and care that we felt completely relaxed and looked after from beginning to end. We are so grateful for such a special stay."
