PB hotel design editorial

Against the forested headland that anchors the quieter northern stretch of Baan Tai Beach, a collection of terracotta-roofed pavilions steps down through coconut palms toward the Gulf of Thailand in a composition that looks less like a resort than a private Thai village that simply accumulated over time. Napasai, managed by Orient-Express Hotels before passing to Belmond, was conceived around exactly that fiction — 69 villas and suites arranged across a hillside promontory, their massing deliberately low and their rooflines drawn from the steep-pitched vernacular of southern Thai domestic architecture. Inside, the rooms carry the warmth of a serious material commitment: steeply vaulted ceilings with exposed dark timber trusses, wide-plank hardwood floors, sliding panelled doors in teak, and woven rattan bench seats positioned at the foot of platform beds dressed in striped cotton. Bamboo roller blinds filter sea light at the windows, and hand-embroidered textile panels on the headboard walls give each room something closer to a collector's residence than a category description. The infinity pool, fringed by tall palms whose reflections dissolve into the Gulf horizon, anchors the lower grounds, while the beach restaurant sets lacquered turquoise tables directly on the sand beneath strung paper lanterns — an unpretentious evening gesture that quietly outperforms far more calculated resort atmospheres elsewhere on the island.

Napasai Samui Reviews

"This was our 3rd visit to the Napasai and we were devastated to learn that it will soon be closing for 2-3 years for “rebranding and renovation”. The most amazing aspect of this hotel has always been its staff team, from gardeners to Executive Chef, receptionists to pool attendants and with special mention to Alla, the most attentive, caring GSM we have ever met. Any future employer would find any of the existing staff a huge asset and we wish them all luck whilst they further their careers. On this recent trip we thank them all for making our say so memorable. It is difficult to see how any changes to the Napasai could improve it as a boutique, luxury resort with a true Thai feel."

"An incredible hotel resort . The spa I had the best massage and facial experience ever. Dinner at Lai Tai was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend Napasai"

"Gorgeous Thai style boutique hotel in a peaceful location with private beach. One of the best I’ve ever stayed in. I loved the spacious and elegant stilt bungalow and large veranda, and the storm lantern that was lit every night for our return was a perfect touch. Although some of the public areas, bathrooms and spa mainly, could do with some updating and painting, it was just perfect. The food was all excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. Great service and value. We didn’t want to leave."

"We were originally only supposed to stay for five days. However, due to the Iran war our flight was canceled, and our stay unexpectedly turned into 13 nights. The team’s positive spirit made this situation much easier for us—they fulfilled many of our wishes and made it possible for us to remain in the same accommodation the entire time. We stayed in an Ocean Villa with a separate bedroom, a separate living room, and a private pool with a lounge area by the water. We truly enjoyed this space and felt very comfortable there. Breakfast was excellent and varied. Mauricio, the chef from Uruguay, always came up with new ideas, and Ae, the head of reception, together with her team, was consistently attentive and helpful whenever needed. The entire resort is well maintained, though after about 20 years it could benefit from some renovations. On the positive side, it’s not an oversized resort, which makes it feel almost private. Even when the hotel seemed fully booked, the property never felt crowded. We will definitely come back one day. 🌴"
