PB hotel design editorial

Pure white render pulled into repeated archways — stacked across two storeys, reflected in a pool whose curved edge mirrors their geometry — gives SALA Samui Chaweng Beach an architectural identity that sits closer to the Cyclades than the Gulf of Thailand. The property, which opened on Koh Samui's densely developed Chaweng strip, deploys this Mediterranean syntax not as pastiche but as a disciplined compositional device: the arches organise the facade, frame the pool terrace, and carry through into the guest rooms as plaster-lined niches holding mirrors that double the white volumes back on themselves. Inside, the rooms sustain the same bleached restraint — polished white tile floors, low platform beds dressed in white linen, warm timber joinery at the desk and bedhead providing the only tonal relief alongside rattan table lamps and spherical pendant lights in clear glass. Full-height teak-framed glazing opens directly onto private plunge pools, mature trees growing up through the enclosing walls to soften the geometry. The restaurant breaks sharply from this palette: cobalt-blue banquettes, bold black-and-white striped drum pendants suspended over teak-framed tables, and an open structure that allows existing trees to penetrate the dining room roof — a gesture that keeps the tropical setting present even as the interiors lean firmly toward a Mediterranean coastal aesthetic. Teak sun loungers arranged beneath old canopy trees on the white-sand beach anchor the property back to its actual geography at dusk.

"Our family of 3 stayed in 2 Oceanfront garden pool suites. On arrival we were welcomed at reception with a cool towel and a refreshing coconut water and coconut macaron. The friendly receptionist then sat us and down to choose pillow types, soap and body lotion scents for our rooms - such a fantastic and personalised experience for each customer. The rooms were beautifully spacious and laid out, I loved the styling with everything in white - it felt very serene. The pool at the rear was a generous size and very private, a welcome cool dip at the end of a hot day. The area by our pool was comfortable and we spent time out there every day relaxing after a day on the beach or out and about. Everything is provided in the room for your comfort - including mosquito repellant spray, a plug in device for in the room, and citronella incense coils to burn outside. Water, coffee machine with pods, kettle with tea selection and milk refreshed daily. Great selection of chargeable alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and snacks in the fridge and mini bar including half-size bottles of a selection of spirits, full size bottles of red & white wine & sparkling wine which I really enjoyed. The delivery every day of a different night time tea in a little glass bottle was such a sweet touch. Our rooms were serviced very well by housekeeping everyday, usually while we were at breakfast - very efficient! Breakfast at the tent restaurant on the beach was beautiful, thanks to Oh and her team who looked after us very well - special mention also to Sao. The whole front of house team are really friendly and helpful. We appreciated the great a’la carte breakfast options with a different special every day, as well as the wide buffet selection and teas, coffees, juices. Breakfast in such beautiful surroundings with genuinely warm and friendly hospitality was a joy and this hotel has that personal element of service absolutely spot on. We spent most days chilling on sun loungers on the beach which was a welcome break for us after a busy few days in Singapore. Never any issue finding sun loungers, plenty to go round. The beach is absolutely beautiful, choice of bean bag or traditional loungers with parasol, all very comfy and with table service from the beach bar. Minh and the guys working on the beach did a fantastic job of looking after us, regularly providing iced water and whatever we wanted from the beach/pool bar menu - thank you. However, while we chose to sunbathe on the beach we couldn’t swim in the sea - it was difficult to walk over the stones and shells to enter the water, but also the water was too shallow for swimming, so we used the oceanfront moon pool to cool down. This is the only major drawback of this hotel for me, I love to swim in the sea! I didn’t find it that easy to get in/out of the moon pool - just something to be aware of if you have any restricted mobility as I do following ankle surgery, that there are no roman/easy access steps or handrail to aide an elegant entry/exit! They would ruin the sleek aesthetic of the round pool I suspect! We ate dinner in the tent restaurant once which we thoroughly enjoyed. The mix of western and Thai dishes on the menu catered to all our tables needs, and the food was beautifully prepared and presented. I particularly enjoyed the oysters from the sexy fish menu and the duck curry. The Thai dancing and fire show was fantastic! Other nights we explored locally (there are restaurants in the immediate vicinity or a 15 min walk/quick songthaew trip into the centre of Chaweng where there is the Central Samui mall and a wealth of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from) or further afield to Chaweng Noi, Cheongmon and Fisherman’s Village on the Friday for the night market . Getting around was easy and reasonable using Grabs. On my birthday I received a birthday card and cake (cheesecake) with candles and a happy birthday decoration on the bed which was a lovely gesture. The hotel kindly accommodated our request for a late checkout on our final day so that we had the cool comfort of the room until we were collected for our transfer back to Samui Airport - which incidentally is only a 10 min drive! Also worth mentioning that the hotel has an app to see facilities, services, book spa treatments, contact reception etc. messages were responded to very promptly. Found the app very useful - a handy addition to that would be if you could access your room charges on there, to check/keep track of your bill to date. Overall this a fabulous resort with amazing service. My only reason 4 stars not 5 is because of not being able to swim in the sea. Otherwise this place is pretty much perfect!"

"A huge call out to the team at Sala Samui for providing the opportunity to attend the Thai cooking course at the hotel. Chef Da did a fabulous job teaching us to prepare and cook a three course authentic Thai meal. A huge thanks to the great staff at Sala."

"Fantastic Lux hotel 10 minutes from the airport, large rooms very clean & bright. From check in everything was made easy,we arrived very early however by 11am we got a call saying our room is ready. Must mention a few people Erwin General Manager comes everyday & has a quick chat to all at the pool,he’s renown for wearing everyday a different colour to correlate with Thailands colour of the day.All the staff are fantastic & super helpful but a special mention to Nick who’s in charge of the great food,Oh ,Sao who looked after us in the Tent restaurant where the food was excellent."

"Sala Samui Chaweng was outstanding and we will definitely be returning. The accommodation was excellent, the setting is idyllic but it is really the staff that make the experience so special. The staff were so attentive and friendly, special thanks to Oh, Mo, Sao, Ice, Beam, Ploy at the The Tent restaurant and all the front of house staff at the lobby, the pool team and the house keeping team. A brilliant holiday"

"Such a cool hotel with possibly the most perfect hotel suite I’ve ever stayed in - if you can stay in the oceanfront pool suite then definitely do! It’s a really cool vibe, the area around the beach has a bit of atmosphere without being too lively if you just want to relax - Ibiza beats in the background, great cocktail menu, a really good happy hour menu. The beach itself is picture perfect as is the resort, everything is pristine white with accents of yellow dotted around the pool. The food is excellent too - definitely head over to Sexy Fish for dinner. I was only here for a few days and it was absolutely not long enough so I’m definitely booking to go back!"
