PB hotel design editorial

Ed Tuttle's translation of classical Thai temple architecture into a private resort language, attempted here for the very first time, established a template that luxury hospitality has been borrowing from ever since. When Amanpuri opened on Pansea Beach in 1988 as Aman Resorts' inaugural property, Tuttle arranged forty pavilions and thirty villas down a coconut-palm-covered headland in Phuket's Surin district, their steeply pitched slate roofs and flame-tipped gables drawn directly from northern Thai salas but stripped of ornament to something far quieter and more elemental. The dark-tiled infinity pool, visible in the images stretching toward the Andaman Sea through a corridor of palms, carries that same tension between precision and landscape — its black mosaic surface turning the surrounding canopy into a mirror. Inside the pavilions, the logic is consistent: wide-plank teak flooring, dark granite desk surfaces set into teak cabinetry with louvered panels, and intricately latticed hardwood screens filtering garden light in geometric patterns that reference Thai fretwork without reproducing it literally. The open-sided restaurant, with its exposed teak post-and-beam structure framing views of neighboring salas, seats guests beneath the same raking roofline that defines the whole compound. At beach level, teak tables under cream paper parasols are placed among granite boulders and tropical plantings, the dining terrace dissolving into the sand with a casualness that the architecture, disciplined and deliberate everywhere else, earns through restraint rather than effort.

"Amazing 4 night stay. Beautiful room, glorious spa, perfect staff and truly great food. Nothing is ever too much effort and nearly everything is taken care of before you even think about it. Undoubtedly one of the best hotels in the world- it’s a kind of antithesis of a Ritz Carlton type hotel where you get asked if you are enjoying it every 10 minutes. The staff here just know. The facilities are wonderful, Phuket beautiful and they clearly run very good tours but I had one place to go and just switch off from the world for a week it would be here. Thank you Amanpuri."

"We had an amazing stay at Amanpuri. Everything was truly excellent from our beautiful pool pavilion to the meals, the beach service, the spa services and our outside activities. I hurt my foot and they took good care of me and even gave me flowers to wish me well. The service on our room was truly spectacular. They serviced the room every time we left. The massage therapist worked very hard to repair the energy blockage in my husband’s lower back. It was truly a spectacular place and a dream holiday."

"The guest experience at Amanpuri is excellent…the rooms comfortable, the staff and service is exemplary, and the food is exquisite. BUT Amanpuri is a classic example of a hotel that doesn’t know what it wants to be. The Aman brand is adult and sophisticated. It is a magnet for couples, who can enjoy each others company or mix with others for interesting conversation with a cosmopolitan clientele. But the villas…with their numerous and varied bedrooms for groups or families, introduce large numbers to a place which upsets the social dynamic which exclusivity offers. Made even worse during the occasion of our visit by an extraordinary number of young children who were allowed to run around without discipline, which spoiled the dining experience more than once. There is an obvious solution to this, which hotel management needs to address before the brand reputation is tarnished."
