PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a pine-forested hillside above Torba Bay on the Bodrum Peninsula, the low-slung stone pavilions of Amanruya were designed by Turkish architect Hüsrev Tayla and completed in 2011 as one of the Aman group's most rigorously site-specific properties. Each of the 36 freestanding pool cottages is constructed from local Bodrum stone — the same warm honey-coloured limestone visible in the images, laid in irregular courses that make the buildings feel quarried from the hillside rather than placed upon it. Cypress and olive trees punctuate the grounds between pavilions, lending the estate the unhurried atmosphere of a private Aegean estate rather than a resort. Inside, the design vocabulary draws on Ottoman and Moorish precedents reinterpreted through Aman's signature restraint. Arched doorways with ogee profiles connect bedroom to bathroom, the latter lit by a pierced circular window whose geometric pattern casts dappled light across limestone floors. Dark stained timber — ebonised ceiling beams, four-poster frames, Wishbone chairs by Hans Wegner around circular dining tables — anchors rooms that would otherwise float away on white linen and pale marble. The main lounge repeats the formula at larger scale: a colonnade of dark-framed floor-to-ceiling windows frames the wooded hills beyond, while low custom sofas in bleached linen line a polished hardwood floor. The outdoor terraces, edged by clipped hedges and furnished with teak sun beds beneath ivory canvas umbrellas, mirror the pool's glassy stillness with quiet precision.

"The Amanruya was, as the name suggests, a dream. My wife and I came here on our honeymoon and it was easily the most romantic hotel I’ve ever been to. Every corner of the hotel feels private and beautiful while maintaining a strong connection to the natural environment. The staff were particularly attentive without being stuffy or intrusive. We’d like to thank in particular Aynur for helping me organize a special surprise dinner, as well as Oya, Ibrahim, and the waiter with a great stripe in his black hair (sorry we’ve forgotten his name!) for caring for us at every turn."

"We enjoyed 3 nights here after staying at the Mandarin in Bodrum. While we enjoyed both places, the two hotels offer completely different experiences and the Aman was a little more our style. The overall sense of tranquility was palpable the second we stepped out of the car and were escorted to our room to check in. Every interaction we had with the team was really exceptional. There was a genuine enthusiasm for making our stay pleasant and relaxing. Oya, in particular, made our time at Amanruya memorable. The room was quite large and had a very big private outside area with a pool. The hotel grounds were expansive with many areas to explore, including a 50m infinity pool. We often saw no other guests except at meals or at the beach. We loved the beach area and spent most of our time there, although some other people have commented on the lack of a sandy beach similar to the Mandarin. We actually liked the set up (it is sort of a pine forest on the water and a swimming area that almost felt lake-like) -- again it was super chill and quiet. There are two restaurants -- the Mediterranean one has an expansive menu and there is a sushi restaurant. We had originally planned to leave the hotel for meals, but opted to stay on the property and found the restaurants more than sufficient and quite good with only limited exceptions (the tuna sashimi wasn't that great). We would go back in a heartbeat and this was a little more our pace and style than the Mandarin (at least in peak season in August)."

"On June 4th, 2025, we visited Amanruya Restaurant as a party of four to celebrate my mother’s 60th birthday—a very special occasion for our family. Unfortunately, the experience we had can only be described as disastrous. Shortly after being seated, we were overwhelmed by a severe insect infestation. While we tried to fend off the swarms of bugs, we also sought assistance from the staff. The server responsible for our table informed us that we were not the first to experience this issue and that all guests had been facing the same problem. This statement clearly indicated that the management was aware of the situation but chose not to inform guests at the time of reservation. It is only natural for guests to expect a flawless dining experience—especially when paying a considerable amount at a globally renowned brand like Aman. This is even more true when the occasion is as significant as a milestone birthday. Instead, we found ourselves battling insects that were getting into our clothes, completely ruining both our comfort and any enjoyment of the evening. When we inquired about pest control, we received inconsistent responses—first being told that spraying was insufficient, then being told that the issue was due to the restaurant’s forested location. The shifting explanations made it clear we were being brushed off. Although we had come to enjoy an elegant evening by the poolside, we were eventually forced to move indoors due to the unbearable conditions. This marked our third table change of the night. While we were discussing our frustration among ourselves, the Food & Beverage Manager approached our table and, in an astonishingly unprofessional and rude tone, told us, “If you’d like, you can leave.” At that point, the evening was entirely ruined. Coming from a family with seven generations of experience in the hospitality industry, and as someone who has always upheld the value of customer satisfaction and professionalism, I have never encountered such discourteous treatment. Such behavior is completely at odds with the Aman brand. That a senior staff member, presumably over the age of 40, would take guest feedback personally and respond with passive-aggressive remarks reflects a deep failure in training and leadership. Rather than protecting the brand’s reputation, such individuals damage it. By the time it was past 9 PM, given the location’s remoteness, we had no alternative but to finish our meal there. However, due to the upsetting experience, we chose not to cut the birthday cake and simply requested it be brought out with the bill. At no point did anyone apologize, nor was any gesture made to rectify the situation. Just before we were about to leave, the Assistant F&B Manager came over and spoke to us for nearly 15 minutes—yet still failed to offer a single apology. Instead, he explained that the F&B Manager had taken our private conversation personally and had therefore told us we could leave. It goes without saying that, in the hospitality industry, especially at a managerial level, there is no place for emotional reactions to guest complaints. If this person is not the owner of the restaurant, his reaction was unwarranted; and if he were the owner, he wouldn’t have said such a thing in the first place In the end, neither he nor his assistant showed any willingness to apologize or make amends in any form. What may have been just another evening for your team was, for us, an incredibly important and irreplaceable occasion. Sadly, it was completely ruined. For all these reasons, I would like to express that the experience we had fell drastically below the standards one would expect from a world-class brand like Aman. I strongly urge a serious review of this incident in terms of both personnel and guest relations, and I trust that appropriate action will be taken to ensure such treatment is never repeated."

"We booked a year ago for this place and were incredulous that within three weeks of our arrival date they cancelled our booking - totally mercenary move, they acccepted a private buy out of the whole resort and blew off all their confirmed bookings! we've used the Aman brand in the USA but never again - they are chasing the $$ and have no regard for delivering true service to their customers. There was no option for "should have gone May 2025 - minus 10 stars" or would have given that rating"

"Amanruya Bodrum Hotel surpassed all our expectations with its exceptional service, tranquil ambiance, and exclusive atmosphere. During our delightful three-night stay, we were impressed by every aspect of the hotel, from the attentive staff to the delectable breakfast offerings. The spa and welness center, a haven of tranquility, provided a rejuvenating experience that left us feeling pampered and relaxed. The privacy afforded by the hotel was truly unparalleled."
