PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a pine-forested hillside above the turquoise waters of Göltürkbükü Bay, where white-cube villas cascade down toward the Aegean in a manner that has made this corner of the Bodrum Peninsula synonymous with a certain discreet Turkish glamour, the Mandarin Oriental Bodrum announced itself in 2015 as perhaps the most architecturally ambitious resort the brand had attempted in the Mediterranean. The property was designed by Turkish architect Hasan Çalış, whose cascading low-rise clusters follow the hillside's natural contours rather than imposing a monolithic hotel block — 109 rooms and suites spread across terraced structures clad in local stone and warm timber that allow the landscape to read through the architecture rather than against it. The interiors, developed in collaboration with the Mandarin Oriental's design team, move between two distinct registers. Guestrooms layer teak-panelled headboards with woven leather detailing, amber lampshades, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Aegean like a sustained argument for the view as primary decoration. The overwater dining pavilion — its warm iroko deck extending over the bay on pilotted supports, pergola screens filtering afternoon light across tables set with bougainvillea — draws on a Aegean vernacular of sun, timber, and salt air without tipping into pastiche. At the Venture Bar, a canopy of slatted pendant lanterns floats above a dark verde marble counter, its gilded ceiling panels giving the room an unlikely nocturnal richness for a resort so committed, in daylight, to the scrubbed palette of the Turkish coast.

"We had an incredible stay at Mandarin Oriental Bodrum. From the moment we arrived, Burak, our concierge, made us feel welcome and was always available whenever we needed anything, even on his day off! He truly went above and beyond throughout our stay. Our room had amazing views and was spacious and comfortable. The buggy service around the resort was incredibly fast, we never waited more than a couple of minutes, even though the property is very large. Breakfast was one of the best I’ve had at any hotel, and every restaurant we tried was excellent. I also loved having luxury boutiques like Louis Vuitton and Chanel within the resort. My older son tried the e-foil for the first time and learned it in just two lessons. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. My boys spent time at the kids club and really enjoyed it. Thank you to Burak and the entire team for making our family vacation so memorable. We hope to return again soon."

"Exceptional stay in the Mandarin Oriental Bodrum. Really spacious room with balcony and sea views with great amenities. Majority of the staff working there were super friendly and attentive, in particular Gul, who went above and beyond for us at Breakfast and daily at the pool and pool restaurant, making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Buruk was extremely accommodating and available to assist with any reservations we required and also checked in regularly with us which was greatly appreciated, including organising a birthday surprise in the room for us and ensuring late checkout. We are pearl status members of the fan of M.O program and it was disappointing to uncover on check out that we were not entitled to some pearl member benefits despite being guaranteed of these at time of booking - when I showed the booking email and all the benefits that we were entitled to for our stay we were just told that those benefits are only available during ‘Peak Summer Months’ despite our reservations being for May and our booking showing that we were entitled to those benefits at that time. Overall a really lovely stay and we would return."
