PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the volcanic tufa cliffs of Uçhisar, where Cappadocia's fairy chimneys rise from the valley floor like calcified sentinels, a cluster of cave dwellings, stone mansions, and underground passages dating back several centuries was gradually assembled and restored into what is now Argos in Cappadocia. The project, developed by the Doğuş Group and opened in 2011, involved consolidating more than thirty individual structures across the hillside into a single property of around fifty rooms and suites — a feat of archaeological sensitivity as much as hospitality design. The tufa stone walls, visible throughout the images in their warm honeyed tones, were left largely untouched, their hand-cut texture forming the primary surface of every room. The interiors strike a balance between the vernacular and the composed: exposed timber ceiling beams, wrought-iron pendant lights with linen shades, and Anatolian kilim rugs anchoring dark-stained wood bed frames against walls that have survived Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman occupation alike. Traditional niches carved directly into the stone serve as decorative frames, while the restaurant's generous tufa arches frame uninterrupted views across the valley toward the eroded tuff formations beyond. The rooftop infinity pool, set in local stone with a mosaic motif drawn from regional craft traditions, sits at the edge of this ancient topography — the volcanic landscape stretching away in every direction, utterly indifferent to the centuries that have passed through it.

"Argos is a beautiful hotel in an absolutely stunning setting. Available with Hyatt points, it makes for a fantastic redemption in the area. However, a few service mishaps left a sore taste in my mouth, and recovery was unimpressive. Check in: We arrived around midday after an early flight from Istanbul followed by a transfer from Kayseri airport. Though our room was unavailable when we arrived, staff were very helpful in getting us situated, including by giving us early access to the gym and spa to shower and work out. Staff kindly upgraded us by one category, which was a nice surprise. Room: Our room was a highlight of our stay. It was very spacious with incredible views of the valley in front of the hotel. While the room itself did not have a private balcony, it was right next to several shared terraces that we never found occupied. The terraces were thoughtfully designed, arranged such that the privacy and clarity of the room's view were preserved. The room was generally very well maintained, and housekeeping was very thorough. However, I was surprised that a flickering lightbulb was left undetected for the duration of our stay. Our room also featured a fireplace, which we were unfortunately unable to use due to high wind. My one gripe with the room was the shower, which did not have a door and only had a wand, with no main shower head. The bathroom (especially the shower) was also rather dimly lit, which might be a concern for visually impaired guests. Amenities: Amenities in the hotel were a highlight, with some notable exceptions. I highly recommend taking the tour of the property offered every day at 5pm, which is a nice overview of the space. A highlight was the wine cellar in a cave below the Seki restaurant. The two pools, though a little small, are both quite nice and were not busy during our stay. The spa facility was well appointed and serene, though a noticeable omission was a public hot tub; the jacuzzi was only available when booked with a treatment. During our stay, we had the opportunity to try two of the culinary offerings on site. The complimentary breakfast, at Nahita restaurant, was sublime. The pastries, yoghurt, and fruit were incredible, and the service was top notch. On the other hand, dinner at the Seki restaurant was wildly underwhelming. Craving an intermission from the traditional Turkish fare, we ordered the pasta, which tasted as though it could have been a frozen meal. The pumpkin dessert, however, is delectable and not to be missed. The hotel is in an area surrounded by other cave hotels, though it has close proximity to the center of Nevsehir, the Nevsehir castle, and great hiking. Service: Service was largely excellent, with attentive and friendly staff at every turn. However, there were notable exceptions that really sullied the experience. On our final morning, the early wake up call we had requested came over 15 minutes late. The ensuing rush spoiled the rhythm of our departure and left our driver waiting. The staff member that checked us out offered us a bottle of wine as an apology gift, but was unable to offer any alternatives when told that most of our party doesn't drink. A bathrobe or comped dinner would have been a lovely gesture, but the agent was insufficiently empowered to offer us either of these things. Mistakes happen, but when front-line staff are not empowered to recover gracefully, it dramatically diminished my impression of the service overall. Bottom Line: Argos is a truly beautiful hotel in a magnificent setting, and overall I generally loved my stay. But in setting such a high bar at the outset, my expectation of consistency in the stellar service was ultimately not met. I would return again to Argos, though I hope that I'm met with a more empowered staff and a menu with no bad choices when I return."

"Argos Cappadocia is a true gem if you want to visit the region while staying at a very quiet and well run hotel. The food is amazing and ingredients sourced locally. The SPA offers great massages and relaxing experiences. Each room has its own character and is built within the cave structure. Sustainability is at the heart of the concept. No plastic around. Service is impeccable. My top rated hotel in Türkiye. A true gem in an otherwise spoiled region with too many cheap hotels and tourists."

"What can we say. We came to experience Anatolia. My good ness from the moment we arrived we were treated with kindness and treated exceptionally well. The check in experience was seamless and made easy. Then we were driven to our room. They call them mansions. Each one is part built into cave and each has a small terrace to sit upon. From most of them you can see the Tagus mountains and the views are breathtaking taking. “Dare to sit and stare, and let the hills and views take your cares.” There are a number of good restaurants our favourite was the Nahita. This is wholly Anatolian food house. It it exquisite. The food is just sumptuous. The whole experience is joyous. Forget about Donn’s Kebabs. Here you can have fire cooked food in clay pots withe top made of dough. The Saslik is so flavoursome. The Heppena is another joy. These dishes are all of the highest order and are made with care. Anything made of beef is a high honour. The staff in the Nahita are all attentive, gracious and kind without being intrusive. Nothing is too much trouble. Everything is designed to make you comfortable. Trust me that is exactly what you get. The restaurant has a lively buzz. The sound of people enjoying themselves and the food. The wine list is outstanding. I solidly recommend the local wines. The Keresai is like a light pinot noir and is an excellent companion to any dish. Their Sauvignon is light crispy. It has a light citrus back taste and a hint of pineapple. In the heat this crispy light white would be a refreshing aperitif. I have stayed in some smashing hotels what can I say. This is outstanding. All the staff are gracious and have only your pleasure in mind. The Spa is a must fab hamam and swimming pool all in caves. The experience is calming and soothing. The hotel does its own tour and is full of history. A very worthwhile trip. The wine cellar is phenomenal. All I can say is outstanding. If you hit this page book it treat yourself you will not be disappointed. Far from it. Go ahead push book now. Have a wholly Cappadoican experience. You will not be sorry."
