PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century Ottoman prison standing within sight of the Hagia Sophia is not an obvious candidate for a luxury hotel, yet the conversion is precisely what gives Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet its singular identity. The building, a neoclassical structure completed in 1919, was originally the Sultanahmet Prison — its ochre-yellow facades, arched windows, and corner watchtower visible in the courtyard image, where a terra-cotta tiled path leads through Mediterranean plantings toward a pointed slate spire that once kept watch over inmates rather than guests. The property was converted by Turkish architect Sinan Kafadar in 1996 and holds 65 rooms across four floors arranged around that same interior courtyard. The interiors, refreshed in recent years by designers working in a palette of terracotta grasscloth, warm cream plaster, and dark-stained timber, carry the building's proportions respectfully — arched windows with their original dark-framed glazing bars intact flooding rooms with filtered Bosphorus light. A woven brass bar front catches the glow in the hotel's lobby bar, where a geometric stone floor in cream and charcoal anchors brass chandelier fittings of looped and tapered form. The rooftop terrace, furnished with teak-framed rattan chairs and teal cushioned banquettes, delivers the property's most extraordinary dividend: an unobstructed dining prospect across to Justinian's great dome, its minarets rising at dusk against a sky that makes the whole improbable enterprise feel entirely earned.

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet Reviews

"We recently visited while on vacation. We had previously stayed at this hotel 20 years ago and thought it was very special. It still is and we had a delightful stay. The location is close to many spots of interest for tourists. We had a great room with a view of the Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus. We enjoyed having lunch and breakfast in the courtyard and drinks in the bar and roof bar. The service of all was noteworthy. We loved that you can shuttle between this hotel and the one on the Bosphorus. We enjoyed an afternoon at that property. Hope to visit again."

"Absolutely horrifying experience. Traffic impossible in front of hotel and they didn’t do anything about it. We had to carry four luggage’s and walk 10 mins up hill after waiting for the concierge for 30 mins."

"My wife and I stayed here for three nights on our way to visit our daughter in Poland. The evening that we arrived we were able to go to the Terrace for drinks and some light food as we settled in after a long flight. It had just opened for the summer season and was a wonderful entry to the hotel and city. We are lucky to have stayed at many 5 star hotels and this hotel is at the very top of the list. I hesitated booking a U.S. based big name luxury hotel with concern that it would be a typical big, sterile hotel. But this hotel is much more of a luxury boutique hotel with excellent personal attention and service. Our room had three large windows with flower boxes that opened to the beautiful courtyard. The many extra touches in the room like, bath salts, fresh fruit daily, lens cleaning cloth for my readers, cocktail shaker with barware, fragrance diffuser spa robes, welcome note etc were very appreciated. The entire staff went out of their way to take care of any requests we had and anticipated needs before we knew we had them. We had breakfast at the hotel both mornings and it was also exceptional. I don't know if this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in but it is right at the top of the list (maybe the top). I highly recommend a stay her!!"

"This Four Seasons Hotel provides outstanding service & comfort at a luxurious hotel near major downtown Istanbul tourist attractions. We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed all the service (turndown night service, careful room cleaning each day) we had in our large comfortable rooms. All the staff we encountered (including the cat guarding the front entrance & lobby) were very friendly & helpful (in fluent English). There's a very good breakfast service with both conventional food items + custom cooked egg items available each morning. We also had a nice meal at the rooftop restaurant, which lots of hot & cold items (mostly appetizers) on its menu. There are also a couple of lobby bars; all of these food & drink locaions gave us prompt service. If you can afford the per-room price, this is a good downtown Istanbul choice."
