PB hotel design editorial

A nineteenth-century Ottoman prison standing within sight of the Hagia Sophia is not an obvious candidate for a luxury hotel, yet the conversion is precisely what gives Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet its singular identity. The building, a neoclassical structure completed in 1919, was originally the Sultanahmet Prison — its ochre-yellow facades, arched windows, and corner watchtower visible in the courtyard image, where a terra-cotta tiled path leads through Mediterranean plantings toward a pointed slate spire that once kept watch over inmates rather than guests. The property was converted by Turkish architect Sinan Kafadar in 1996 and holds 65 rooms across four floors arranged around that same interior courtyard. The interiors, refreshed in recent years by designers working in a palette of terracotta grasscloth, warm cream plaster, and dark-stained timber, carry the building's proportions respectfully — arched windows with their original dark-framed glazing bars intact flooding rooms with filtered Bosphorus light. A woven brass bar front catches the glow in the hotel's lobby bar, where a geometric stone floor in cream and charcoal anchors brass chandelier fittings of looped and tapered form. The rooftop terrace, furnished with teak-framed rattan chairs and teal cushioned banquettes, delivers the property's most extraordinary dividend: an unobstructed dining prospect across to Justinian's great dome, its minarets rising at dusk against a sky that makes the whole improbable enterprise feel entirely earned.

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet Reviews

"One of the loveliest spots I have stayed at. As soon as my daughter and I checked in, they were incredibly welcoming. The spaces were gracious and clean. Every day, a new treat and fresh fruit was provided in the room. All the personal amenities were provided, including umbrellas on rainy days. Communication on the app was easy, if one wanted to chat that way, as well. We ate mostly offsite trying the local fare, but did eat in our room twice when exhausted from sightseeing and for brunch one morning. All of those times, the meals were delicious and the food was fresh. Everyone was incredibly attentive and kind. Although I was visiting my daughter as she was on her study abroad for the semester’s spring break, I had an immediate business need and had to scan/sign some papers. There is no business center, but the front desk was able to support me immediately. We walked to the Bosphorus Four Seasons (quite a distance!); there are shuttles between the sites. Definitely worth a visit to see the contrast. I liked being in Sultanahmet because of our itinerary - Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Topkapi Palace, etc. And the driver, Burcu, who picked us up from the airport, as well as drove us back to the airport on our separate legs was just wonderful. On time and very safe!"

"This hotel was an incredible experience from beginning to end. Every single staff member was kind and helpful. The hotel is beautifully decorated and very luxurious. Special shout out to Cetin Ozdogan, the wonderful concierge who helped us with itineraries, reservation, transportation, etc. Finally, it is perfectly located to explore Haghia Sofia, Blue Mosque, etc - literally less than a 5 minute walk. We loved it."

"Our stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet was truly exceptional from start to finish. The team went above and beyond even before we arrived by answering questions promptly and helping arrange a fantastic private tour guide who made our visit to Istanbul unforgettable. The hotel’s location could not be better. Situated in the heart of Sultanahmet, it’s incredibly walkable to Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, making it easy to explore the city at a good pace while still having a peaceful retreat to return to. The room itself was beautiful. It was spacious yet warm and inviting, with the kind of thoughtful details that make you feel immediately at home. Check-in was seamless, and because the hotel is relatively small, the experience felt personal, curated, and attentive in a way that larger properties often cannot match. Throughout our stay, the staff made us feel less like guests and more like family. Breakfast each morning was a highlight, with excellent service and a wonderful selection in a stunning setting in the courtyard. What impressed us most, however, was the care shown after our departure. When we realized we had left items behind in the room, the hotel quickly helped coordinate a courier to meet us at IST Airport during our layover between Milan and Miami. That level of service is rare and deeply appreciated. This was a fantastic experience in every way and a property fully deserving of its Three-Key Michelin designation. We would return without hesitation and we hope to again soon!"
