PB hotel design editorial

Directly beneath the shadow of the Hagia Sophia's eastern dome, where the Sultanahmet hillside drops toward the Marmara, a row of late Ottoman timber mansions has been restored and joined into a single property. Hagia Sofia Mansions Istanbul, part of Hilton's Curio Collection, brings together several nineteenth-century yalı-style wooden buildings — their deep-forest green clapboard facades, white-painted lattice screens, and carved bracket cornices preserved with forensic fidelity — into a 37-room hotel whose exterior carries more architectural conviction than almost anything built in this neighborhood in the past century. The restoration honored the vernacular language of the Istanbul konak: wide bay windows projecting over the street, ornamental fretwork between floors, a roofline punctuated by dormer gables. Inside, the rooms layer an Ottoman-inflected eclecticism onto herringbone parquet floors — four-poster beds with turned spindle columns lacquered in crimson or powder blue, ikat-patterned Roman blinds, Moorish pendant lanterns with geometric brass piercing, and inlaid octagonal side tables that reference the intarsia craft tradition of Anatolia. The glazed garden restaurant, visible in the images, offers a lighter counterpoint: terracotta tile floors, blackened metal louvered ceiling, wire bistro chairs. The property's most arresting space sits underground — a Byzantine cistern with ribbed brick vaulting supported on carved stone columns, now converted into a spa pool where shallow turquoise water reflects centuries of undisturbed masonry above.

"Umut and Buruk were the definition of hospitality and recommended an excellent restaurant which we went back to several times. Umut scheduled a very knowledgeable, safe and friendly driver to return us to the airport. Buruk looked up information to answer questions regarding places we wanted to visit. Nozima gave us a very thorough introduction to the property ensuring we were connected to WiFi at check in which we really appreciate. The property was safe, clean, and beautifully decorated with local art."

"What can I say - the mere are 2 reasons for the 5 stars - Location and the Staff. Location - it is right next to almost all the places one has to visit in Istanbul - Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Top Kapi Palace, Basilica Cistern…. People - right from the reception - Nozima, to the bell boys Gurur and Ekber (he is also a national volleyball player), the concierge Sarper Alus, the staff at the breakfast place - Busra, Wai Wai, Marva and finally the manager at the Garden Restaurant - Sabahattin - they all collectively made our stay absolutely memorable."

"I absolutely loved my stay at the Hagia Sofia Mansions Istanbul, Curio Collection by Hilton. These beautifully restored Ottoman-era mansions truly make you feel immersed in history—the marble bathrooms feel like a private hammam, and the rooms are elegantly appointed with gorgeous İznik-inspired patterns. What made the stay unforgettable was breakfast at the Sarnıç Restaurant, set inside a breathtaking 1,500-year-old cistern. The service was impeccable: the concierge seamlessly coordinated our airport transfers, and every member of the staff made us feel genuinely cared for from arrival to departure. The location is simply unbeatable—our room overlooked Hagia Sophia and was literally about ten meters from its ancient walls, placing us steps away from the great historic sites of old Constantinople 🌙"

"We stayed for 4 nights at the Hagia Sofia Mansions. Our room was perfect. The location was ideal, easy to walk to so many historic locations, restaurants and public transportation. We are Hilton Diamond members, so complimentary breakfast every morning was diverse and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner at the restaurant too."
