PB hotel design editorial

Perched directly on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Beşiktaş, the creamy neoclassical building that houses Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul began its life in the 1950s as the Çırağan tobacco warehouse — a utilitarian structure whose waterfront position would prove far more valuable than its original purpose. The conversion, completed when the hotel opened in 2013, preserved the five-storey limestone-clad facade while a glazed mansard roof was added to the upper floor, visible from the strait as a subtle modernising gesture above the building's otherwise period massing. A floating pier pavilion extends directly over the water, its white-painted ironwork columns and glass canopy giving the property an almost Victorian seaside character when viewed from passing ferries. Inside, the 186 rooms carry a restrained Franco-Ottoman palette — damask-patterned carpets in soft blue and grey, upholstered headboards in linen, lacquered ebony occasional tables set against panelled walls finished in pale warm white. Balcony rooms facing the strait frame the Asian shore and the Bosphorus Bridge with floor-to-ceiling windows that make the water feel architecturally present rather than merely scenic. The Chinese restaurant, by contrast, drops into deeper registers — dark timber screens with arabesque fretwork, amber silk upholstery, a coffered ceiling with recessed lighting — bridging the brand's Hong Kong heritage with the decorative vocabulary of Istanbul without forcing the connection. The waterfront terrace, furnished with powder-coated steel bistro chairs and marble-topped tables edged by clipped box hedging, is among the most directly pleasurable places to sit beside the Bosphorus.

"We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. Such a great trip and experience in this hotel. It is locsted in Beşiktash neighborhood which is close to a ferry station and there is a street across from the entrance full of bars, restaurants and cafes. The staff is really helful and thsughtful either. The rooms are quite clean and a very on time housekeeping service. On the floor we stayed, Seher was the one who was really kind and meticulous. The lights are great in the rooms . not too dark. Although we booked a sea view room, the noise of the passing boats and ships wasn't bothering at all. All amenities were avsilable and great such as air conditioner, coffee machine, internet and etc. Breakfast was served at 7 to 10 am. The quality of all items were incredible. If i want to tell you about the money, it is Shangrila and you must expect a higher amount of money than the other places but it is worth it. All and all thank you Shanrila"

"From the moment we walked in, the Shangri-La was impressive. The décor is genuinely both gorgeous and timeless, and the customer service was some of the best we've experienced. The staff was warm and attentive from check-in onwards, with the concierge walking us to our room and taking the time to show us all the amenities and how everything worked. We'd seen a few reviews mention inconsistent service, but honestly, every interaction we had throughout the hotel and our stay was impeccable. Some of the pictures also make the decor seem a bit dated but it was not at all. The location is fantastic too, with tons of great food options just steps away and an easy drop off spot just outside the main doors or a short walk to the main road for taxis and ubers. The ferry station is a short stroll from the main doors offering quick access to the Asian side and the amazing neighborhoods on the Asian side. The Dolmabahce palace is also literally neighboring the hotel. A few standout touches: afternoon tea was an absolute treat, breakfast was a lovely spread, and the Asian restaurant on-site served delicious food with excellent service. When our AC needed attention, it was fixed literally instantly. Our room was spacious with a very comfy bed and we really enjoyed the partial river view. Breakfast service had the occasional small mix-up, but staff were quick to fix it, so it never affected our experience. Overall, a gorgeous hotel with truly outstanding service."
