PB hotel design editorial

The stone facade visible in the images — arched windows framed by pilasters, corniced parapet, and the carved inscription reading Sümerbank Binası above the entrance — tells the building's story before you step inside. Originally constructed in the early twentieth century as a branch of Sümerbank, the state-owned industrial bank that became a symbol of Turkey's Republican modernisation drive, the structure on Karaköy's waterfront edge was converted into The Bank Hotel Istanbul, a 64-room property affiliated with Marriott Bonvoy's Design Hotels programme. The conversion preserved the neoclassical limestone exterior in its entirety while threading a contemporary hotel programme through the interior floors. Inside, the design plays a careful game between the building's institutional gravitas and a warmer residential sensibility. The ground-floor restaurant works the high-ceilinged banking hall format well — patterned encaustic floor tiles, white-painted panelling, and an eclectic mix of terracotta, forest green, and stone-coloured upholstered armchairs clustered around white-clothed tables, bold graphic artworks punctuating the walls. Guest rooms carry channelled-panel headboards in taupe linen, walnut-stained joinery, and chartreuse mid-century armchairs that introduce a welcome acidity against the neutral ground. The rooftop restaurant, glazed on three sides, frames the Golden Horn and the Hagia Sophia skyline with a directness that no amount of interior decoration could improve upon — hanging foliage softening the glass box into something that feels, at golden hour, genuinely cinematic.

About

The Bank Hotel Istanbul From Past to Present, “TREASURE OF HISTORY” The Bank Hotel Istanbul is located in Karakoy, one of the most prominent neighbourhoods of Istanbul known for its history. Karakoy welcomes its guests with views of Turkey's world-famous historical peninsula. With its sophisticated design the Bank Hotel Istanbul promises more than just ordinary accommodation for its guests. With a magnificent view of old Istanbul, the restaurant on the rooftop offers an unforgettable experience for its guests with a international cuisine. The Bank Hotel Istanbul, sits in a region that hosts artists, a concept intertwined with art, respecting the locals and international guests. The Bank Hotel Istanbul is perfectly located to explore bohemian Beyoglu and historical Sultanahmet. VOYVODA STREET Bank Street in which the hotel is situated is not just any street, Vaivoda Street as it was and is still officially called, has always played a central role in the life of the district of Galata. Originally a thoroughfare within the inner walls of Galata, its importance is attested as early as the fourteenth century by the presence of the Palazzo del Comune, the Genoese town hall and by the Piazza, the market place of the Genoese town. In Ottoman times, until 1682, it preserved its importance thanks to the survival of the half autonomous Genoese community, the Magnifica Comunita di Peyra, in parallel with the development of European Merchant communities whose warehouses were conveniently located in the same area and to the establishment of some local units of the Ottoman administration. Thus, it was the office and probably the residence of the police chief of Galata the Vaivoda that eventually gave the street its name, while the court of Galata was located just a street below, on Mahkeme (Court) Street. The existence and centrality of the street is attested by the famous seventeenth century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi. During the second half of the 17th century, the street which was named by Evliya Çelebi as ' The Road of Vaivode' had become the financial and business hub of not only İstanbul but also of the entire Ottoman Empire. During this period, Vaivode Street had become the centre of attraction for bankers and banks, amongst the people it was known as 'The Street of Bankers'. SÜMERBANK BUILDING Italian architect Antonie Tedeshi, born in 1867 in İstanbul had an office in Pera, where he practiced his profession as an architect. Sümerbank Building is the only building left as his artifact. This construction is the building of the 'Credit General Ottoman/Deutsche Bank/Sümerbank', believed to be built around the 1880's, at the address of Bankalar Caddesi No 25, Karakoy. THE BANK HOTEL İSTANBUL The building is designed by Antoine Tedeschi in the style of neo-renaissance. The Bank Hotel Istanbul is one of the typical examples of the eclectic architectural style of the 19th century, with its historic buildings. The hotel building was purchased by Yilmaz Ulusoy Holding in 2010 and started a brand-new spring in its story. Yilmaz Ulusoy's took the first step to restore and transform the building into a hotel with a respectful approach to history and nature at the highest level. After the purchase of the building by Yilmaz Ulusoy Holding in 2010, The Bank Hotel Istanbul emerged as a result of the restoration initiated by architect Mimar Khan Tümertekin, preserving the historical texture of the building, which was restored with the principle of repairing the original without damaging the artistic value.

"This hotel checked all the boxes for me! Boutique, charming, personal, quiet, beautifully and stylishly decorated, gorgeous and comfortable rooms, always the perfect music selection in the restaurant (tasteful, not to loud, added to the vibe which I think can make or break a dining experience), nice buffet breakfast with a wide variety of both western and Turkish options, helpful receptionists, excellent location. I am very particular and do a lot of research before deciding where to stay and I can say that I was NOT disappointed! Highly, highly recommend if you looking for the above attributes in a hotel. I will definitely be back!"

"Gorgeous hotel and deluxe room. Great location. Good use of the CSR Edit benefits. Breakfast was pretty good, but limited. I also got a relaxing massage at the Pasha Spa in the hotel. The only thing that didn't make sense to me was that I couldn't use my $100 F&B credit to buy food for takeout. Oh well."

"I booked this hotel through the Chase Sapphire Reserve “The Edit” program specifically for the stated benefits: complimentary breakfast and a $100 food and beverage credit per stay. My partner and I booked consecutive nights separately — two nights on my card, one night on hers — which means these were two separate stays, exactly as the program allows. The hotel refused to honor the second $100 credit. Their explanation was that because the nights were consecutive, Chase would not allow it. We called Chase directly, and Chase confirmed the opposite. Chase told us the hotel should honor the second credit and even reached out to the property on our behalf. The hotel still refused. To make it worse, they limited the use of the single $100 credit to the first portion of our visit, even though they were simultaneously treating the full three nights as one stay for the purpose of denying the second credit. It was inconsistent, inflexible, and clearly not aligned with the published benefits of the program. The property itself may be fine, but the way they handled this was disappointing. If a hotel is going to participate in a premium program like Chase Sapphire’s Edit collection, it should honor the benefits as advertised — not blame Chase and push responsibility back onto guests. Based on this experience, I wouldn’t book here again through Chase or otherwise."
