PB hotel design editorial

A former Franciscan nunnery on the steep slope of Istanbul's Galata hill, converted into a boutique hotel by local practice Autoban in 2011, supplies Tomtom Suites with both its address and its central design argument: how to place a frankly contemporary interior language inside a nineteenth-century neoclassical shell without either element apologizing for itself. The white stucco facade, with its arched ground-floor openings, dark timber shutters, and bracketed window surrounds, presents as a respectable late-Ottoman institutional building — the rhythm of shuttered bays giving nothing away about what sits behind. Inside, Autoban's answer to that tension involves exposed dark-painted steel columns and beamed ceilings left deliberately structural, wide-plank pale oak flooring, and walnut joinery used for headboards and bathroom vanities. The suites — 20 in total across five floors — open through full-height sliding glass walls onto terraces, and the better rooms carry views across Beyoğlu's rooftops toward the Bosphorus and the floodlit bulk of Topkapi Palace beyond. Bathrooms are finished in heavily veined white marble, with freestanding oval soaking tubs positioned as furniture rather than fixtures, separated from the sleeping area by sliding glass panels rather than solid walls. The rooftop restaurant, its retractable glazed facade folding away entirely on warmer evenings, frames that same panorama across the city at dusk — minaret silhouettes, distant water, the particular blue the Istanbul sky turns just after sunset.

About

Tomtom Suites, The Old Franciscan House is an authentic Istanbul building whose posture reflects the social history of Pera from 1850’s to recent. Throughout its history, this building was home for French nuns and some well-known Levantine families. Now it is ready to host its new guests with its "unique" service policy and a new design, pairing modern comfort with historical background. Tomtom Suites, The Old Franciscan House has 20 suites, a terrace offering a panoramic view of old town and a nostalgic outlook. It tells the story of an over 100 years old building with a stylish language, but without loosing the essence of the story.

"My husband and I spent 10 nights at the hotel in January, 2026. We agree the friendly and competent service at the TomTom Suites is the best we have ever experienced at any hotel. For example: although we did not warn the hotel in advance that we both follow a vegan diet, the chef Zeynep prepared inventive and delicious tofu and garbanzo bean dishes for us every day to supplement the many other dishes on the buffet table. The genial breakfast manager Fuat, assisted by the equally friendly Yusef, ensured our meals ran smoothly. At the reception desk gentlemen named Attila and Nural took care of every request with kind efficiency. The room attendants all did flawless jobs. I believe the hotel runs so well due to its lovely general manager, a woman named Seray. The location of the hotel is outstanding. Though situated in a lively neighborhood, the street that the hotel is on is blocked from through traffic; the surroundings are so quiet we could sleep with the window open. The rooms are very large and the beds extremely comfortable. All in all, I can't imagine ever staying in a different hotel while in Istanbul."

"I don’t know where to start here because I liked everything about this hotel - the art, the view, the sheets, the staff, the breakfast, the afternoon tea. It’s in a lovely area with lots of good restaurants at all prices and about 8 minutes walk to a main tram line. Our room was very stylish with a nice sitting and dressing area"

"The suites at this boutique hotel are beautifully maintained. The staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive. Special thanks to Nurol at reception and his colleagues for their outstanding service—assisting us with flight confirmations, arranging an airport taxi, handling room service, giving local directions, and patiently answering all our questions. We also appreciated that everyone we interacted with spoke English, which made our stay even more comfortable. The hotel’s location is excellent. It sits on the same street as the Italian Consulate General, meaning there’s no regular car traffic—making it peaceful and quiet at night—and the street is secured by a guard 24/7. From here, you can easily explore nearby neighborhoods: Istiklal Street, a lively pedestrian avenue with countless shops and restaurants, is just a 3–7 minute uphill walk. The artsy Cihangir district, full of boutique shops and cafés, is also close by, while a short walk downhill takes you to the waterfront area near Tophane Metro station. This provides easy access to major attractions such as Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Market, the Jewish Quarter, and the ferry terminal. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for both its comfort and its unbeatable location."
