PB hotel design editorial

From the Cihangir hillside above Tophane, where the old Bosphorus-facing neighborhoods of European Istanbul slope down toward the water, a cream limestone facade with black canopy awnings and wrought-iron balconettes announces a building that has settled into its residential street with deliberate quietness. Witt Istanbul Suites, which opened in 2009, was designed by local practice Metex Design Group, and the exterior's restrained Parisian register — seven floors, rhythmic fenestration, corner massing — gives little away about what happens inside. The interiors, also by Metex, work a productive tension between raw structure and considered finish. Exposed concrete ceilings with bare copper pipework run above oak-planked floors and leather-upholstered headboards; glossy black brick tiles appear as room dividers and wall cladding, their reflective surfaces amplifying low light in the bar, where tufted cream banquettes sit opposite olive-velvet armchairs around black marble cafe tables. A recurring motif of dot-cluster patterning — pressed into wall panels, cut into metallic screens — threads through the public spaces and guestrooms in a gesture that evokes Ottoman tile geometry without reproducing it. The hotel's 17 suites, each configured as a proper apartment with kitchenette and generous floor area, are oriented toward the rooftop deck panorama: Galata Tower, the Golden Horn, the minarets of Sultanahmet stacked on the skyline — a view that no amount of interior design ingenuity could improve upon.

About

Witt Istanbul Suites has an excellent location within walking distance from Istanbul's business district, Istanbul Modern museum and the buzzing bars and boutiques of both Beyoglu and Cihangir. All 15 suites span a generous 60m2. They are popular for long-stay guests as each has a Carrera marble-clad kitchenette with microwave, fridge and Nespresso machine. The super-cool beds with curved headboards and the laptop desks have been especially designed for Witt Istanbul Suites by Autoban. Sheets and towels were also commissioned from Denizli, a famous purveyor of Turkish linen. Cable TV, an excellent DVD collection, ipod docks and a welcome gift of multi-coloured macaroons are indulgent touches. But it's the bathrooms that make these suites really special. The ergonomic Corian sinks with pebble-shaped handles and the cluster of shower-heads that create a cocoon of misty hot water are all from designer Ross Lovegrove's Istanbul collection from Vitra.

"The Witt Istanbul Suites is an outstanding hotel located in a hip area of Beyoglu. The room designs are really modern and have some really nice touches. I have never stayed in a hotel with this kind of design, and we loved the room's layout. The King Room has a nice bar area with plenty of dishware to enjoy local snacks and drinks. The bathroom amenities include Molton Brown soaps and lotions, which smell great. The breakfast is amazing, with many good hot and cold dishes to choose from. The waitstaff in the restaurant are really nice and friendly. The hotel has a rooftop with an amazing view of the Bosporus and the Galata Tower. The hotel is centrally located so that it is easy to walk to the Galata Tower, Taksim Square, Istiklal Caddesi, and the tram stop at Tophane. As others have mentioned, the hotel is located on a steep hill, but walking is always the best option in Istanbul. The Witt is located in the hip Cihangir district of Beyoglu and near the hotel, there are several restaurants, cafes, wine shops, convenience stores, small supermarkets, and coffee shops. We hardly went out of the neighborhood for dining because the places near the Witt are so good. There is also a laundry shop around a minute's walk from the hotel (Cihangir Laundry) that we used, which was really convenient. The front desk staff are friendly and welcoming. We have stayed at the Witt Istanbul Suites twice this year, and plan to continue to stay at this hotel each time we come back to Istanbul. The location and staff are the best. We loved that the hotel is small, which adds to the laid back and peaceful vibe. The Witt is a "Design Hotel" and the only improvement I would recommend is for the Witt to participate in the Marriott Rewards program, like other Design Hotels around the world. It is much easier for guests to book the hotel through Marriott and earning rewards points is always great. We highly recommend this hotel for anyone considering a stay in Istanbul!"

"Well-appointed room, exceptional views, attentive service, tasty breakfast, all in a great location. This hotel is situated in what seemed like one of the most charming neighborhoods in Istanbul, with lively restaurants and cafes and within close walking distance to public transportation and key sites. We had a long panoramic, which was huge and had amazing views of the city, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Galata Tower, and Bosphorus. Breakfast was varied and tasty. One word of caution: the hotel is situated on a steep hill, so if you have mobility challenges it may not be the best choice for you."

"We stayed twice in Room 62 for 8 nights and then 3 nights, with an interim trip to Malta. The view over the strait and towards Galata Tower, the old town and views to the Asian side from the terrace were amazing! King Panoramic suite with Terrace is the name. The room included a comfortable bed, sofa seating, cutlery and mini bar area and a large bathroom. The hotel is kept spick snd span and all the staff work hard to keep the place happy for visitors. We loved the location close to the tram stop at the bottom of the hill, and surrounding narrow streets with small shops and businesses. It’s a lively more residential neighborhood and hence much quieter than being in Sultanahmet. We walked everywhere, clocking up regular 10-15 km daily! We booked the hotel’s airport transfer, while more expensive than a regular taxi, the man waiting for us at Istanbul Airport was on time and the trip relatively quick at 45 minutes. I would recommend this hotel as it’s convenient walking access to the major sites, quiet and very well maintained. Thank you to all! ."

"A boutique hotel up the hill from Istanbul but easy to get into town and cross the bridge to see all the sights - Mosques; Palaces; The Grand Bazaar. Lots of great restaurants and bars close to the hotel at a pretty good price. The room in the hotel was quirky and good, and the service very friendly and helpful. A good breakfast! Would definitely recommend."
