PB hotel design editorial

South Caicos has always been defined by salt — the shallow flats that made this the economic engine of the Turks and Caicos for two centuries — and that history runs directly through the design of Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, which opened in 2025 on a beachfront site bordering Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park. TVS (Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates) shaped the low-rise compound into white-rendered pavilion blocks arranged around a freeform pool terrace, their pitched roofs finished in warm grey and fitted with solar panels, their massing kept deliberately horizontal so the Atlantic stays visible from nearly every vantage point. The palette pulls from the landscape: cerulean water, bleached sand, the oxidised rust of old salt pans rendered in art and textiles throughout the 100 ocean-facing rooms and suites. Interior designer Malcolm Berg of Edge of Architecture — named Gold Key Awards Designer of the Year in 2020 — worked the same earthy warmth into the guest rooms, where travertine-format stone floors, channelled linen headboards, cognac leather benches, and sculptural ceramic lamps sit beneath whitewashed beam ceilings. Abstract works in pink and ochre, suggestive of aerial views over the salt flats, hang above every bed. The open-air bar and restaurant takes the most direct approach: exposed timber trusses over a hardwood deck, fossilized coral stone columns left rough-faced, and folding glass walls that dissolve completely to let the sea breeze carry straight through.

"My stay at Salterra was a short overnight visit, but I was still able to experience many of the highlights the resort has to offer. Although I was only there from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, I had enough time to enjoy the resort's beautiful grounds, stunning ocean views, and relaxing atmosphere. The property is thoughtfully designed, with plenty of spaces to unwind, whether by the pool, on the beach, or simply taking in the views from the room. The room was spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed. One of my favorite parts was spending time on the balcony and enjoying the scenery. The resort offers several great photo opportunities, and the landscaping and overall design create a luxurious yet relaxed feel. I also enjoyed the dining experiences during my stay. The food was well prepared, and there was a good variety of options available. A special shout-out to Philip, who delivered our meals and drinks from Jack & Jenny's, Salterra's unique food truck. He regularly checked in on us, ensured our drinks were topped up, and made sure we had everything we needed while relaxing on the balcony. His warm and attentive service added a personal touch to an already enjoyable stay. The beach and pool areas were inviting, and the overall atmosphere made it easy to disconnect, relax, and enjoy the moment. What stood out most was how peaceful South Caicos feels. Salterra provides a wonderful balance of luxury and tranquility, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of the island. I left feeling refreshed and grateful for the experience and would gladly return for a longer stay in the future."

"Truly the trip of a lifetime - my husband and I travel a lot for work and for leisure and THIS was the getaway we needed. From the wonderful airport transfer to delicious welcome drink, the lovely tour and impeccable room to Tony's butler services and the wonderful restaurant staffing we were amazed by the property and its employees. The first night we ate the Caribbean BBQ was delicious, the breakfasts at Regatta were lovely and we went back TWICE to Sisel for the butter chicken, Salterra Roll sushi and the pizza. WOW. Lounging by the pools was remarkably relaxing. We loved the fresh mango juice, rest and attentiveness of the workers. Our spa day was truly and deeply refreshing. We took a little bike ride to the store and pier and it was whimsical and fun. We took the cocktail making class, enjoyed the gym and had fun exploring with the kayaks too! I can't say enough good things and am already aching to go back. I hope Salterra never loses its hidden wonder and remote beauty!!!"

"The resort and staff at Salterra are the definition of class. We were welcomed by our friendly and professional butler Allain. The room was elegant. Every room faces the ocean. My two bedroom was perfect for my family of four. The facilities are amazing, everything from the restaurants to the spa, kids zone, and gym. The staff are also what this place special. Everyone was so kind and hospitable. My seven-year-old daughter loved the resort. Everyone was kind and patient with her. She felt like a princess. Allain was superb. He was available from 7am to 10pm every day. He managed our dining reservations, excursions, and even did very special things in the room that were a total surprise. We were his first guests at Salterra but he was no stranger to impeccable service. When we come back I would love to have him be with us. My daughter still talks about him and asks how he is. Another standout person was Chino. He runs one of the restaurants and their outdoor BBQ night. He always has a smile on his face and made our night very special whenever we saw him. We did a little bit of everything. The spa is world class with some of the best therapists I’ve ever had. My daughter loved playing with the kids zone with other kids. When she wasn’t there she was in the pool or ocean. The pools are well maintained with lots of chairs and shade. We never had to fight for one. Complimentary water and ice was brought every time we sat down. There are pools just for the kids and one just for the adults. There are cabanas around the pool and on the beach for rent. I highly recommend the beach one. We did a bank excursion and snorkeling. Both boat crews were professional, safe, and a lot of fun. The excursions are reasonably priced and well worth it. The food here is extremely good! Since Salterra is the only resort on the island off property options are limited but Salterra has such a variety of offerings you don’t feel limited. Brine has the five-course fine dining meal that is mouthwatering. Dining by the pool lunch and dinner is an option too. Salterra offers complimentary cocktail hours and smores nights. This vacation was a once in a lifetime opportunity for us and Salterra made it unforgettable."

"My stay at Salterra Resort was absolutely incredible! The staff made the experience unforgettable and the service was phenomenal from start to finish. Everyone went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and cared for. A huge thank you to Jean Paul (houseman), Maambe at the front desk, and Tony the bellman for always being so helpful and kind. The dining experiences were amazing thanks to Charlse and Ridi at Cobo, Christina at Cobo, and Philippe at Jack and Jenny’s outstanding service every single time! The spa experience was also top tier thanks to Desak and Mayu. So relaxing and professional. OMG, I will definitely be back. Thank you to the entire Salterra team for such an amazing vacation!"

"We had a wonderful week-long stay at the beautiful Saltera Resort with our family, including our two small children and my pregnant wife. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make our stay easy, comfortable, and truly relaxing. Traveling with young kids can sometimes be a challenge, but the team was incredibly accommodating and thoughtful throughout our entire visit. A special thank you to our butler, Tony, for keeping everything organized and making sure we were always taken care of. Rebecca made our kids’ day more than once with ice cream, and Cristiano did an amazing job managing our favorite restaurants and making each dining experience feel special. This trip was exactly the escape we needed from our very busy lives back home. We left feeling grateful, rested, and already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommend Saltera Resort for families looking for a beautiful, welcoming, and relaxing getaway."
