PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as a literal palace for a nation still writing its own architectural identity, the building that houses Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Abu Dhabi cost an estimated three billion US dollars to construct and took roughly 37,000 workers three years to complete before opening in 2005. Designed by the British architect John Elliott of RTKL Associates, the 1,020-room complex stretches across 100 hectares of the Ras Al Akhdar peninsula, its rose-gold sandstone facades and 114 domes visible from well out in the Arabian Gulf — as the aerial image here confirms, the building holds its own against Abu Dhabi's gleaming tower skyline with the quiet confidence of something that was never competing. Inside, the rooms photographed following a recent renovation show how far the interiors have moved from the original's more maximalist register toward something more considered: sage-painted tray ceilings fitted with sculptural brass-and-alabaster chandeliers, fluted brass cabinetry, geometric mashrabiya-patterned headboards in woven metallic fabric, arched balcony doors framing direct sea views. The dining spaces retain warmer drama — pointed Moorish arches in dark timber, gold-leafed coffered ceilings, curved leather banquettes in burnt sienna arranged around circular tables beneath cascading globe pendants. Outside, the freeform pool threads between date palms and colonnaded sandstone pavilions with tiled mosaic domes, the whole landscape carrying the atmosphere of a royal garden rather than a resort amenity.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi Reviews

"I felt insulted during my current stay at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, which has been far below the standards expected from a hotel of this caliber. Upon arrival, Hamza at reception was unwelcoming and offered no proactive guidance—I had to repeatedly ask for basic information. The situation escalated with his supervisor, Ahmed Adel, who responded in a dismissive and unprofessional manner regarding my ID, despite my clear explanation that it was on the way. He even stated that I would have to leave the room and the hotel if it was not provided immediately. When I raised my concerns, he responded defensively, saying, “we welcomed you and even offered a welcome tray.” However, this only added to my disappointment, as the tray itself was handled in an unhygienic manner, with the biscuit being touched by hand. I came here to relax, yet I already regret booking two nights as the experience has been more stressful than enjoyable. For a hotel of this level, the front desk should reflect the highest standards of professionalism. Instead, I felt unrespected throughout. Overall, this experience does not align with the brand’s reputation for luxury and excellence"

"We had a truly wonderful stay at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional across every area of the hotel. The reception team, breakfast staff, pool attendants and housekeeping were all incredibly attentive, thoughtful and consistently caring in every interaction. The hotel itself is iconic and the rooms are spacious with plenty of storage, making it perfect for families. We were traveling with our three-year-old child, and everything felt comfortable and well-suited to our needs. The pool area is fantastic, especially with the lazy river and water slides, which added a lot of fun to our stay. Breakfast was outstanding—high quality, varied and truly one of the highlights of our experience. We will absolutely return to this magnificent hotel with great pleasure. A big thank you to the entire team for making our stay so memorable."

"I stayed for 2 nights and 3 days, and every moment exceeded expectations. From the warm and seamless check-in to the smooth check-out, everything was handled perfectly. A special mention to Arjun, Lita, and Hamza at reception for their outstanding hospitality and making us feel so welcome right away. Dining at Episode Restaurant was another highlight — Santosh and Moe provided amazing service, attentive, friendly, and professional throughout. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to come back. Highly recommended!"

"The supervisor Dino, Mega and Fatzo our hostess and host at the mandarin oriental Episodes gave us the most amazing experience of hospitality. We enjoyed a high tea including their signature gold cappuccino. Nothing was a problem. The atmosphere was delightful with a live pianist playing in the background. A absolute must when you’re in Abu Dhabi."
