PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as a literal palace for a nation still writing its own architectural identity, the building that houses Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Abu Dhabi cost an estimated three billion US dollars to construct and took roughly 37,000 workers three years to complete before opening in 2005. Designed by the British architect John Elliott of RTKL Associates, the 1,020-room complex stretches across 100 hectares of the Ras Al Akhdar peninsula, its rose-gold sandstone facades and 114 domes visible from well out in the Arabian Gulf — as the aerial image here confirms, the building holds its own against Abu Dhabi's gleaming tower skyline with the quiet confidence of something that was never competing. Inside, the rooms photographed following a recent renovation show how far the interiors have moved from the original's more maximalist register toward something more considered: sage-painted tray ceilings fitted with sculptural brass-and-alabaster chandeliers, fluted brass cabinetry, geometric mashrabiya-patterned headboards in woven metallic fabric, arched balcony doors framing direct sea views. The dining spaces retain warmer drama — pointed Moorish arches in dark timber, gold-leafed coffered ceilings, curved leather banquettes in burnt sienna arranged around circular tables beneath cascading globe pendants. Outside, the freeform pool threads between date palms and colonnaded sandstone pavilions with tiled mosaic domes, the whole landscape carrying the atmosphere of a royal garden rather than a resort amenity.

"We stayed at Mandarin Oriental Emirates Palace last week for what was meant to be a special wedding stay before getting married, and sadly the experience was extremely disappointing. We booked the vegan room specifically for the advertised features such as the plants, vegan minibar, sustainable bedding and vegan amenities, but when we arrived at 2 p.m. none of this had been prepared. Even the coffee capsules had already been used. A staff member admitted they had been “rushing” to get the room ready, which was surprising given this is standard check-in time. Although a manager apologized and promised to fix everything and arrange a “surprise,” the room was still incomplete and the surprise was just a tiny bottle of orange juice and hummus left in the room without informing us. The issues continued throughout the stay, poor cleanliness in public bathrooms, bird droppings on chairs around the pool bar, poor service, and large sections of the hotel closed without prior notice. I also ordered the vegan tofu scramble from the vegan menu and it arrived with butter. We spent a considerable amount of money across the hotel restaurants and services during our stay, but the overall experience did not reflect the luxury standards expected. The most disappointing part is that this was our wedding stay before getting married, something the hotel was aware of, yet nothing about the experience felt special or thoughtful. A manager later offered us a complimentary night’s stay, but honestly this was not appealing after such a poor experience. We would still need to drive 1.5 hours each way, pay for petrol, and spend more money within the hotel again, which did not feel worthwhile considering how disappointed we were with the service and overall stay. We also emailed a formal complaint afterwards and received no response at all, which unfortunately says everything about the customer service we experienced"

"Even though my stay was short, it was truly exceptional from start to finish. From the warm Check-In with Gio to the smooth and effortless Check-Out with Ahmed E., Amani & Shawki, everything felt easy, welcoming, and perfectly handled. A special thanks to Haitham, who always goes above and beyond to make sure guests are happy and nothing is ever missing. Pradip, Lindah, and the entire team were also fantastic throughout the stay. It was, is, and always will be my favorite place."
