PB hotel design editorial

Directly across the water from Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where the Al Maqta Creek opens toward the Arabian Gulf, few hotels anywhere carry quite such an insistent view — and the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr was conceived around that fact. The name translates as gate to the sea, and the ten-storey building, clad in a curtain wall of blue-tinted glass trimmed with warm sandstone-coloured panels, presents its full facade to the waterfront in a horizontal sweep that frames the mosque's domes and minarets from almost every room. Opened in 2011 with 369 rooms and suites, the property was designed to meet that setting with a certain quiet confidence rather than competing with it architecturally. The interiors balance Gulf-facing transparency with material warmth: polished travertine floors in the rooms give way to custom botanical-patterned rugs, upholstered chaise longues on chrome legs, and headboard wall panels dressed in delicate branch-motif wallcovering in cream and charcoal — a palette that keeps the eye moving toward the water beyond floor-to-ceiling glass. The bar shifts register entirely, its darkly lacquered ribbed ceiling radiating outward in a composition that evokes a palm canopy rendered in ebonised timber, with circular banquettes in caramel leather anchoring the room. Outside, a long lap pool lined in aquamarine mosaic tile runs parallel to a private beach, date palms punctuating the terrace at regular intervals against the Gulf horizon.

"I booked Fairmont through Yas Island because I wanted to give my young daughter a memorable vacation. We specifically chose Fairmont because of its reputation as a luxury hotel, expecting exceptional service and cleanliness. Unfortunately, this turned into one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. To complete transparency i booked room 623 that’ where everything happened! The problems started with housekeeping. After a glass broke in our room, I requested someone to clean it. When I returned, I found one housekeeping employee sitting on my bed, charging his personal phone using my charger, while another employee was outside the room. As soon as I entered, he rushed out without saying a word. He then realized he had left his phone connected to my charger, came back to retrieve it, and left again without even apologizing. This was an unbelievable violation of guest privacy and professionalism. The housekeeping service continued to be extremely poor. Broken glass was not properly cleaned, wrong items were delivered after simple requests, and our garbage remained in the room for three consecutive days. The most disturbing part was discovering what appeared to be bed bugs. For two days I had been experiencing itchy bites all over my back, assuming they came from somewhere else. Then I found insects in the bathroom, and when I caught one, it contained blood, confirming my worst fears. No guest should ever have to worry about insects or possible bed bugs in a hotel of this standard. To make matters worse, I also lost one of my gold earrings inside the room. Despite informing the hotel, it was never found. The Deputy Manager, Mr. Barakat, was professional and tried to help by upgrading us to a suite, and I appreciate his efforts. Unfortunately, the suite had many of the same issues. It was not properly cleaned, with hair in the bathtub, dust, dirty glass, damaged furniture, and generally poor housekeeping standards. I asked to move again, even to a smaller room if it was clean, but my request was refused. Instead, housekeeping spent hours attempting to clean the suite while my daughter and I waited late into the night. At nearly 11:00 p.m., we were still waiting, despite planning to sleep much earlier. It was stressful, exhausting, and completely unacceptable. The hotel itself is beautiful, luxurious, and offers excellent facilities. However, a luxury hotel is only as good as the people who maintain it. Sadly, the housekeeping team completely ruined what should have been a wonderful vacation. Looking back, I genuinely feel that choosing this hotel was a mistake. Fairmont did not justify the trust I placed in its brand or deserve my choice. I expected a luxury experience, but instead I left with concerns about hygiene, guest privacy, and basic housekeeping standards. My daughter and I still have one night remaining, yet we honestly wish we could leave immediately. The only reason we are staying is because it is already too late to find another hotel. I truly hope management addresses these issues seriously, because unless the housekeeping standards improve, the hotel’s beautiful facilities and excellent brand like Fairmont will continue to be overshadowed by an unacceptable guest experience. I sincerely hope management addresses these serious housekeeping and hygiene issues so that no other guest has to go through what we experienced."

"During the month I spent at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi, I had the pleasure of meeting outstanding staff members who were always helpful, reliable, and highly professional. A special mention goes to Mr. Al Makthoum, who never failed to serve me a delicious Italian coffee every morning during breakfast. He was always courteous, attentive, and dedicated to ensuring that every guest’s needs were met. His professionalism and positive attitude truly made a difference. Another special thanks goes to Mustafa from the Security team. We shared many enjoyable moments together, watching FIFA World Cup matches, having friendly conversations during breaks from my work, and chatting after my gym workouts and sauna sessions. It was a real pleasure getting to know him. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the Reception and Concierge teams, with special thanks to Emmanuel from the Concierge team, Zayed, Paolo, Kim, Bushra, and many others whose kindness and professionalism made my stay even more enjoyable. Thank you all for making my stay such a pleasant and memorable experience. I truly appreciate your hospitality and wish you all the very best. Marco Erbi"
