PB hotel design editorial

Directly across the water from Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where the Al Maqta Creek opens toward the Arabian Gulf, few hotels anywhere carry quite such an insistent view — and the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr was conceived around that fact. The name translates as gate to the sea, and the ten-storey building, clad in a curtain wall of blue-tinted glass trimmed with warm sandstone-coloured panels, presents its full facade to the waterfront in a horizontal sweep that frames the mosque's domes and minarets from almost every room. Opened in 2011 with 369 rooms and suites, the property was designed to meet that setting with a certain quiet confidence rather than competing with it architecturally. The interiors balance Gulf-facing transparency with material warmth: polished travertine floors in the rooms give way to custom botanical-patterned rugs, upholstered chaise longues on chrome legs, and headboard wall panels dressed in delicate branch-motif wallcovering in cream and charcoal — a palette that keeps the eye moving toward the water beyond floor-to-ceiling glass. The bar shifts register entirely, its darkly lacquered ribbed ceiling radiating outward in a composition that evokes a palm canopy rendered in ebonised timber, with circular banquettes in caramel leather anchoring the room. Outside, a long lap pool lined in aquamarine mosaic tile runs parallel to a private beach, date palms punctuating the terrace at regular intervals against the Gulf horizon.

"We had such an amazing stay at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. It was not the first time for us to the stay at this hotel and definitely not the last. Honestly is one of those trips you don’t forget. What really made the difference was the people. A big thank you to Bouchra, Christian, Al Makthoum and Sudula for being so kind, welcoming, and genuinely attentive throughout our stay. It felt very personal, and that meant a lot to us. Can’t wait to come back here and I highly recommend this place if you’re visiting Abu Dhabi!"

"We came back to the Fairmont breakfast after many months away, and it honestly felt like coming home. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family. Sudala and Jessica were absolutely exceptional! warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. They remembered the little details, checked in at just the right moments, and made sure everything was perfect without ever being overbearing. Their service felt so natural and heartfelt, which made the whole experience even more special. The atmosphere, the food, and the overall experience were already great, but it was really Sudala and Jessica who made it unforgettable. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and valued, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you both for such amazing service , we’ll definitely be back again soon!"

"The hotel truly could not have done any more for us. After the initial surprise of our room not being available on the first night, we were provided with an alternative, and from that point on, the hotel more than made up for it over the following 10 days. The Gold experience was exceptional, and the team on the Gold floors were outstanding from start to finish—especially given the challenging circumstances towards the end of our stay with the conflict in the region. Stephen, Phoo, and the lovely Kenyan lady, along with the rest of the team, consistently went above and beyond, always delivering service with warmth and professionalism. Cafe Sushi was well worth multiple visits, with Suna and the team providing first-class service to match the excellent food. The pool bar and its staff were also excellent, particularly Brett, who was fantastic with guests. Reem at the front desk is an incredible asset to the Fairmont and must surely be a strong candidate for early promotion. The hotel clearly benefits from first-class leadership, with Miss Erica and Miss Austelle (Front of House Director) being highly visible, hands-on, and attentive to every detail. This was our fifth visit since 2015, and I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel."
