PB hotel design editorial

Before Dubai Marina's tower clusters existed as anything more than reclaimed sand, a low-rise Moorish palace was taking shape along Jumeirah Beach that would establish the visual grammar for Gulf resort architecture for the decade that followed. One&Only Royal Mirage, which opened in 1999 across 65 landscaped acres, was designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo — the Hawaii-based practice responsible for some of the most commercially influential resort architecture of the late twentieth century — in a language drawn from Andalusian and North African precedent: sand-coloured render, horseshoe arches, pierced mashrabiya screens, and a central dome that anchors the arrival sequence. The reflecting pool approach flanked by date palms and pierced brass lanterns, visible at dusk in the images, establishes a processional axis closer to a Mughal garden than a hotel forecourt. Inside, the interiors move between registers. Guest rooms carry carved white-lacquered headboards in arabesque fretwork against cerise damask cushions and embossed bed runners — decorative in its ambition, deliberately so. The palace villas push further, layering gold-fretted mirror panels, cobalt Murano-style glass pendants, and gilded Louis XV-derived occasional chairs against white marble floors inlaid with geometric borders. The dining room counters this richness with restrained tailoring: tufted ivory banquettes, tan leather chairs, and cascading crystal chandeliers hung from coffered ceilings. At the beach pool, a Corten steel portal frames a mashrabiya arch beyond, the Dubai Marina skyline rising behind — an unplanned juxtaposition that has become one of the most photographed views in the emirate.

"Recently returned from our annual stay with family and friends this time at the Arabian Court and as expected we were not disappointed. Although there were limitations on the number of restaurants available those that were, more than made up for it. Staff throughout the hotel were friendly, polite and very efficient. The pool team led by the wonderful Akhil worked tirelessly, in at times uncomfortable conditions with high humidity. They continued to provide excellent service throughout the day and always with a smile. My only suggestion is maybe consider providing a separate smoking area at the pool for those that choose too. The Samavor lounge was always our first evening stop with Jamin, Princess and Manish taking excellent care of our group with our pre dinner refreshments in comfortable cosy surround. The Rotisserie and Ozone for dinner. First class friendly service, with a top quality wide selection yet staff were still happy to go the extra step if you were looking for something not on show. All staff throughout should be commended. Special thanks in the restaurants to Binod, Tilraj, Mohit and Esther. Thankyou Royal Mirage for giving us more great memories and extra pounds on my waistline. Already looking forward to a return in 2027."

"I’ve stayed at many beautiful hotels, but my experience at One&Only Royal Mirage was genuinely something special. From the moment I arrived, the service stood out. Every member of staff I encountered was polite, professional, understanding and incredibly accommodating. They consistently went above and beyond to make sure my stay was as enjoyable as possible. 🌟 A Special Mention for Willy and His Team I really want to give Willy, the Front Manager, and his team a huge amount of recognition. Willy is an absolute credit to the hotel and a huge asset to the company. His attitude, professionalism and willingness to help genuinely touched me. He didn’t simply do his job — he went above and beyond to ensure everything was taken care of and that I felt looked after as a guest. It is rare to come across someone who puts so much genuine effort and care into their work. Willy is exactly the kind of person who makes a luxury hotel feel truly luxurious. His performance deserves recognition, and I sincerely hope the management team understands just how valuable he is to the hotel. 🏨 The Hotel Itself Is Stunning The hotel is one of the most beautiful I have ever stayed in. The moment you walk around, it feels as though you have stepped into Arabia. The architecture, atmosphere and attention to detail create a wonderful sense of the UAE and its heritage. There is something incredibly special about the whole setting. It feels luxurious without losing that authentic Arabian character, and it is a place where you can genuinely relax and appreciate your surroundings. 🍽️ Rotisserie Team & Chefs — Outstanding Another huge highlight was the Rotisserie team. They are an absolute credit to the hotel. The chefs and waiting staff consistently went above and beyond, and the food was exceptional. The flavours were incredibly authentic, everything was prepared to a very high standard, and the steaks were cooked to perfection. One small moment really summed up the level of service. On one occasion, I couldn’t find any ketchup. Despite the restaurant being busy, one of the chefs himself noticed and simply said, “Sit down, I will bring it to you.” He personally brought it over to me. It may sound like a small thing, but that is exactly what exceptional hospitality looks like. He didn’t have to do that, but he chose to go the extra mile. The food was, without a doubt, some of the best I have experienced in a hotel. The chefs deserve enormous credit, as do the waiting staff who work incredibly hard to deliver such a high standard. The Salvator was also really nice delightful food and service a great relaxed area and lovely afternoon tea. 🛏️ The Room The room was spacious, comfortable and very relaxing. I particularly loved the large chair — it was incredibly comfortable and made the room feel even more inviting. And the bed deserves a special mention. It was spacious and unbelievably comfortable. The mattress was genuinely one of the best I have ever slept on. After a long day, getting into that bed was absolute bliss! A Few Minor Cons To give a completely honest review, there are a few areas I think could be improved. The hotel toiletries could be better. I would have preferred to have a lock on the toilet/bathroom door. The television was rather small for a room of this standard. However, these are minor points and certainly did not take away from what was otherwise an outstanding experience. ⭐ Final Thoughts What makes One&Only Royal Mirage a true five-star experience is the people. The beautiful surroundings and incredible food are certainly important, but it is the service that really makes this hotel stand out. The genuine care, friendliness and willingness of the staff to go above and beyond is what I will remember most. A massive thank you to Willy and his team, and to the entire Rotisserie team, including the chefs and waiting staff. You should all be incredibly proud of the service you provide. Willy, in particular, deserves the highest praise. His professionalism, kindness and dedication made a real impression on me, and he is a fantastic ambassador for the One&Only brand. Despite the small areas for improvement, I would absolutely return to One&Only Royal Mirage. In fact, I’m already looking forward to coming back. Five stars from me — and a special extra five stars for the people who made the stay so memorable. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟"

"One & Only Review A spectacular, private huge oasis of grounds hidden behind the metropolis of Dubai’s skyscrapers. Structured in a palatial setting, you can fall in love at first sight with the One & Only. Welcomed by smiles and a very approachable front desk team we were quickly led to our room where a cot bed and roll out bed had been placed along with baby bottle steriliser and bath seat for our 4 month old. Clean, spacious rooms, with views of the gardens and pool, made our stay comfortable. Breakfast and buffet at Rotisserie were impeccable with plenty of offerings. The pool was amazingly spacious and temperature of water perfect for the summer heat. All staff throughout the property were polite and quick to serve. Ignes, Willy, and a young Egyptian gentleman (sorry forgot his name) on the front desk team can be commended, as well as a stand out individual for us, Mohit at Rotisserie - who needs his own certificate from us!! We look forward to staying with you again, and exploring the renovated side of the property also."

"Lovely hotel. Everything is perfect only spoilt by the road and the properties built opposite on the beach now. Such a shame."
