PB hotel design editorial

Before Dubai Marina's tower clusters existed as anything more than reclaimed sand, a low-rise Moorish palace was taking shape along Jumeirah Beach that would establish the visual grammar for Gulf resort architecture for the decade that followed. One&Only Royal Mirage, which opened in 1999 across 65 landscaped acres, was designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo — the Hawaii-based practice responsible for some of the most commercially influential resort architecture of the late twentieth century — in a language drawn from Andalusian and North African precedent: sand-coloured render, horseshoe arches, pierced mashrabiya screens, and a central dome that anchors the arrival sequence. The reflecting pool approach flanked by date palms and pierced brass lanterns, visible at dusk in the images, establishes a processional axis closer to a Mughal garden than a hotel forecourt. Inside, the interiors move between registers. Guest rooms carry carved white-lacquered headboards in arabesque fretwork against cerise damask cushions and embossed bed runners — decorative in its ambition, deliberately so. The palace villas push further, layering gold-fretted mirror panels, cobalt Murano-style glass pendants, and gilded Louis XV-derived occasional chairs against white marble floors inlaid with geometric borders. The dining room counters this richness with restrained tailoring: tufted ivory banquettes, tan leather chairs, and cascading crystal chandeliers hung from coffered ceilings. At the beach pool, a Corten steel portal frames a mashrabiya arch beyond, the Dubai Marina skyline rising behind — an unplanned juxtaposition that has become one of the most photographed views in the emirate.

"We had a wonderful 2-days layover in Arabian Court One&Only Royal Mirage. Everything was perfect. The main point for us is the Kids Club and it exceeded all our expectations. The activities run from 10am to 6pm and there is a wide range of activities for the kids. The staff is really friendly and they give a lot of gifts to the kids. The attention to detail is 100%. My daughter absolutely loved it. The hotel is beautiful, very calm, low rise. Perfect for luxury calm family staycation. The Fitness and spa are fully equipped (this comes from a former fitness coach!). Smooth and friendly check in and check out. They granted a complimentary 8am early check in ! Really appreciated. The breakfast is really good and with a wide selection of different honeys and jam. The rest is A la carte. It could be bigger with more choice but it's already very good. All the staff really helpful and friendly. 24hrs Whatsapp service for your request. Nice location, at the bottom of the palm. Will come back again ! Thank you all the team from Switzerland !"

"Was happy to return to the residence and spa. It’s quiet and peaceful and adults only. Really enjoyed the Hammam treatment and the breakfast."

"My friend and I needed a place to decompress, given the situation we are in, as well as his own health challenges. I had a totally different choice but he convinced me to join him at the One & Only Royal Mirage due to its prestige as one of the OGs of Dubai's upscale hotel brands. We were given a notification that we could check in before noon so we aimed to be there at 11:00am. However, our room was not ready so we waited a little bit. There was an area with beverages and small bites, which was a welcome treat. The staff were warm and friendly, especially the Asian man (I failed to get his name but he looked like he was SouthEast Asian) The property is not overly huge, but what was wonderful was it was divided into smaller areas (Palace, Arabian Court and Residence) which gave it a cozier, more intimate feel. To fill in our time, we asked for advise on how to go to one of the malls at The Palm and was directed to take the buggy to the monorail. It was a bit messy, as the buggy driver had to pick up other guests somewhere but didn't really explain to us why there was a bit of a wait since he was not fluent in English. Finally, we arrived at the monorail station only to find out that it was closed... and that it was closed for the last 2-3 months. That detail should have been told us by the staff at the reception. But that was the only hiccup in the entire stay. Our room was fairly well sized, with two queen sized beds, a coffee maker (Nespresso... a nice touch). The TV was a little on the small side but no issue there. The bathroom had a tub, but had a separate shower. His and hers sink was well appreciated. The toiletries were made from a local brand, Montroi. The pool was not too crowded but that was probably because I went there an hour before closing. The gym was well equipped and the staff were amazing. Access to the sauna and steam room gave me a total relaxing cool down. Breakfast was decent, with both decadent and healthy options. It was nice to start the day with the bright and sunny Hakima and Phoo welcoming you and the all-smiling man at the egg station making your special plate. Checkout was a breeze."

"Super courteous when the hotel was empty. Restaurant and pool staff remained very friendly and efficient as they could be as things got busier. Clearly the hotel had been overbooked as we were hounded by constant calls from the front desk trying to make us check out early, despite having agreed a late check out when we checked in. Front desk then denied ever having made the agreement. Even the promised pool pass, offered as an apology, never arrived in my email. Disingenuous. Took the shine of what was already an extremely expensive(£1000+) 48 hour staycation. Not value for money and a mistake that won’t be repeated."
