PB hotel design editorial

Before Dubai Marina's tower clusters existed as anything more than reclaimed sand, a low-rise Moorish palace was taking shape along Jumeirah Beach that would establish the visual grammar for Gulf resort architecture for the decade that followed. One&Only Royal Mirage, which opened in 1999 across 65 landscaped acres, was designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo — the Hawaii-based practice responsible for some of the most commercially influential resort architecture of the late twentieth century — in a language drawn from Andalusian and North African precedent: sand-coloured render, horseshoe arches, pierced mashrabiya screens, and a central dome that anchors the arrival sequence. The reflecting pool approach flanked by date palms and pierced brass lanterns, visible at dusk in the images, establishes a processional axis closer to a Mughal garden than a hotel forecourt. Inside, the interiors move between registers. Guest rooms carry carved white-lacquered headboards in arabesque fretwork against cerise damask cushions and embossed bed runners — decorative in its ambition, deliberately so. The palace villas push further, layering gold-fretted mirror panels, cobalt Murano-style glass pendants, and gilded Louis XV-derived occasional chairs against white marble floors inlaid with geometric borders. The dining room counters this richness with restrained tailoring: tufted ivory banquettes, tan leather chairs, and cascading crystal chandeliers hung from coffered ceilings. At the beach pool, a Corten steel portal frames a mashrabiya arch beyond, the Dubai Marina skyline rising behind — an unplanned juxtaposition that has become one of the most photographed views in the emirate.

"We recently had a wonderful stay at One&Only The Mirage and are already looking forward to returning. Although the main swimming pool was closed for renovations, which was a little disappointing, guests were able to use the Drift Beach Club pool instead. While this is a lovely facility, it can be quite lively at weekends, so it may not suit those looking for a quieter, more relaxed pool atmosphere. What really made our stay exceptional was the outstanding customer service. We spoke with the management team, particularly Czarina, who was incredibly kind and thoughtfully upgraded us to a beautiful, immaculate suite. This generous gesture truly made our holiday extra special, and we are so grateful for her kindness. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, friendly, professional, and always happy to help. A special mention also goes to Eunice, the floor supervisor, who took the time to ask if there was anything we needed. It’s those thoughtful personal touches that make all the difference, and they are something One&Only The Mirage does exceptionally well. The team at the Rotisserie restaurant also deserves recognition for their friendly and attentive service. The breakfast and dinner selections were extensive, with an excellent variety of high-quality food that catered to every taste. Our room was spotless throughout our stay, beautifully maintained, and housekeeping was outstanding. The hotel’s gardens were absolutely immaculate, and despite the ongoing pool renovations, there was virtually no noise or disruption, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. One&Only The Mirage is a truly beautiful hotel, with stunning views, elegant traditional architecture, and exceptional service that makes every guest feel valued. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Dubai."

"I spent another magical few nights at One and Only Royal Mirage- Arabian Court. I want to sincerely thank everyone for an absolute outstanding stay at Arabian Court over the last week. I was absolutely delighted with the generous upgrade to the Prince Suite which was, spacious, luxurious and elegant. A special thanks to team members Ashwin, Ines and my personal host Aimen, who did an outstanding job. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the spa and days at the pool and at Drift beach club. My stay at One and Only Royal Mirage, has once again, surpassed my expectations. For this reason, I will again look to return for another stay next year. This is a truly magical and amazing hotel. I highly recommend everyone to stay at One and Only Royal Mirage."

"We have been guests of the One&Only chain around the world many times, and in Dubai we have stayed at Royal Mirage – The Palace on numerous occasions. With The Palace currently closed for renovation, we chose the Arabian Court, and for the most part it lived up to everything we have come to expect from this brand. The hospitality, level of service, food, and pool were all excellent, and The Drift was a real highlight. The dining was outstanding, especially Eauzone and The Rotisserie. We have known Thisara for many years — he worked at The Palace and now manages Eauzone and The Drift to a truly world-class standard. Over the years he has become the person we feel closest to at One&Only, and he is a living testament to the hotel's level of service and genuine hospitality. We would also like to thank the reception team, especially Linn, Nazbira, Kunduz, Czarina, and Bertina, for their around-the-clock help, warmth, and professionalism. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them, and they resolved every request with patience and a genuine desire to make our stay perfect. They are a credit to the hotel. Regrettably, our stay was marred by one serious incident that we feel management should know about. One evening, returning from the gym (which is also excellent) to meet my parents at the beach, I found a security guard named Elias shouting aggressively at them — my parents do not speak English, and he made no attempt to communicate calmly or respectfully. He informed us that the beach closes at 7 pm. We were not swimming, yet he insisted we could not even sit on the benches or couches and made my parents stand up. We accepted this and went for a quiet walk along the shore, only for Elias to come running after us, shouting again, this time claiming we were "swimming" simply because our feet were in the shallow water. What we found most disrespectful was that, mid-conversation, Elias simply turned and walked away, forcing all three of us — paying guests of the hotel — to follow him in our swimwear just to continue the discussion. The entire encounter left us feeling humiliated and deeply frustrated. Rules about beach hours are perfectly reasonable, but the manner in which they were enforced — shouting, refusing to let guests sit, and treating long-standing loyal customers with such disregard — was completely at odds with the standard One&Only sets everywhere else. We hope this feedback is taken constructively. Our loyalty to One&Only remains, and the many wonderful people who looked after us are the reason we will return. But we would strongly encourage management to review how beach security interacts with guests, particularly those who do not speak English."

"I recently visited Euzome Restaurant to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Ayoub was serving our table, and he truly went above and beyond to make our evening special. His professionalism, friendliness, and attention to detail made us feel welcomed from the moment we arrived. The highlight of the evening was when he surprised us with a dessert plate and a birthday candle, while the entire staff joined in singing Happy Birthday. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made the celebration even more memorable. I definitely made the best choice by coming here."
